Regarding the maiden name question - This would not be a Catholic thing, but a French-Canadian one. It's likely that the women were listed by their maiden names, but there's no guarantee that the 2 godparents were husband and wife. There is no requirement that the godparents be a married couple, but they are probably relatives of the parents, rather than friends as you might find today. I would like to comment on the other message posted posted in response to your question. I've been on this list for more than 10 years, and this is the first time I've ever seen a message about posting to the county boards. In RI, we don't have county government, so we tend not to think in those terms. Official records will be found at the city/town level or at the state level. There are no county government offices.
