    1. Re: [RIGENWEB] Civil war hero's grave vandalized
    2. This cemetery has been a difficult site to protect for many years. It cannot be seen from any highway and only partially from a backroad. Being frequented at night by revelers and vandals makes it virtually impossible to make secure. It is a great spot for young boozers. I noted this cemetery many years ago before the Greene stone was totally vandalized and told a member of a nearby organization but to no avail. I was not into cemetery preservation then as now. You can talk about vandals being punished - that's not the total solution; "mob justice" is ludicrous. These are kids. These kids grow into adults; many become respectable citizens. I am sure they are not happy when they remember the asinine things they did as kids. A chain link fence would be a good start - where's the money? The people being victimized there can't vote - they have no voice. So politicians and the city and state and, in this case, even the government turn their heads. I am sure if the kids wanted to get into a chain link fenced area they would simply use bolt cutters. The toppling of the Martha Dana cross (Gen. Greene's second wife) took a lot of effort and determination. It was a challenge and kids like that kind of challenge. We have to show kids that challenges can be more than just energy used to destroy. We have a national mentality that has elevated "macho energy" to the highest level. But it is even more complicated than that. Even the early colonists vandalized cemeteries - a good example is the Plymouth cemetery which stones were smashed and even removed to be used as housing material by our "forefathers." A further irony in this case is that a national organization will soon dedicate a memorial to Gen. Greene at Gettysburg. This while his grave is now a wreck. A very complicated situation needing constant dedication. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
