Dear Listers: I have been lurking for a while and am very much impressed by the quality of the posts and the lack of pettiness. You are all doing a great job. I am a Providence native and have many family members to trace and am doing that while I volunteer at NEHGS. I will call upon you when the brick wall appears on my family searches. As former academic dean at Katharine Gibbs School in Boston, I am working on Mrs. Gibbs and her school in Providence. The centennial of the school's founding is 2011, and no one has done work on her genealogy yet. I have some gaps in the genealogy and do not know whether you might be able to provide suggestions about how to proceed. I have three questions: marriage of William Gibbs and K(C)atherine M. Ryan, the schooling of the two sons, and where the elder William Gibbs worked. The first is about the marriage of William GIBBS and K(C)atharine M. RYAN. I have checked the RI marriages for 1879-1899 and IL marriages for the same time without success. The second concerns the sons William Howard GIBBS born in 1897 and James Gordon Gibbs born 17 Jan 1900. According to KGS lore, the sons went to LaSalle Academy, but a check of their archives was negative. My next step will be Cranston Public Schools, but Cranston did not become a city until 1910. Is there an archive other than CPS? Both sons were in WW I, but when I checked the enlistment cards, I did not find them. Neither the 1900 nor 1910 federal census has the correct William Gibbs listed, but the 1905 RI census has William and Katharine Gibbs living at 110 Albert Street in Cranston. He works as a watchmaker on Westminster Street at the corner of Mathewson. It seems to me that this might be Tilden-Thurber. Does anyone know whether there is a way to find out exactly where he was working. Attempts to find out more about Tilden-Thurber have not been successful. I can, of course, include more information, but I am aware that I have asked for quite a bit of help here. Rose Doherty

It doesn't give grooms name but I remembered reading somewhere that Katherine went to school in New York prior to marriage to William Gibbs and dates seem right as their son was born a year later! Here is link to website where I found this info. http://www.italiangen.org/NYCBridessearch.asp Name: Catherine Ryan Date of marriage: Oct 11, 1896 Certificate # 7094 County, Kings Here is link to NY Vital Records info. http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/home.shtml I also found Katherine, sons and sister Mary Ryan in 1910 RI Census. Her name was listed as Katherine GIBBER. She was 47, born in Illinois, sons William, age 12, James age 10, Mary Ryan age 50 all living at 110 Albert Ave, Cranston. 1910, RHODE ISLAND, PROVIDENCE, 1-WD CRANSTON Series: T624 Roll: 1438 Page: 94 Hope this helps!
