Hello, I hope this is of interest to some of you. I know it isn't genealogy related but it is about US history so I thought I'd forward it to the list. I'll just paste the press release below: On Tuesday, December 2, at 7:00 pm, local author Meredith Mason Brown will be at the Westerly Public Library to talk about his new book on Daniel Boone. Mr. Brown, a Stonington resident, has written a book titled "Frontiersman: Daniel Boone and the Making of America", published in 2008. He will talk about Daniel Boone and sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at the library, courtesy of the Other Tiger bookstore. Born in 1734, Daniel Boone is probably most famous as one of the first settlers of Kentucky. In 1775, he blazed a road through the Cumberland Gap and founded one of the first English-speaking settlements beyond the Appalachian Mountains, named Boonesborough. He then served as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War, fighting American Indians who supported the British. In 1778 he was captured by Shawnee Indians and ended up being adopted into the tribe. He escaped and continued to fight to defend the new Kentucky settlements. He was later elected to three terms in the Virginia General Assembly, and, in 1799, moved to Missouri, where he lived until his death in 1820. Daniel Boone was a legend in his own lifetime, due to an account of his adventures that was published in 1784. However, it turns out that many things believed about him are actually myths: he didn’t wear coonskin caps, he read and wrote better than many frontiersmen, and he was not the first settler in Kentucky. Meredith Mason Brown’s book has been very well-reviewed, with one reviewer stating that of the published books on Daniel Boone, it is the most engrossing and well written of them all. He conducted some of his research for the book at the Westerly Public Library, and is showing his appreciation by giving this talk there. Programs at the library are free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible. For more information call the Westerly Public Library Reference Desk at 401-596-2877, Ext. 3.
