Hello, I just looked at the archives of this List and found an old posting from more than 10 years ago where someone asked: What was the reason why so many people left RI and moved to Killingly, CT. I didn't find a response from that time. And I wondered whether it was discussed in other years. I believe there were 5 DEXTER couples who left RI around 1780's and up to 1800 and settled in Killingly, CT. My ancestor* Joseph DEXTER and his wife, Mary (ALLEN), were one of the couples. These couples all had many children. And, yet, I don't remember seeing a good list of all the children born to them. (I think I did find a short list in the archives of the CT ? Lists last week.) I have posted a lot of information on the Windham Co., CT, List about Joseph DEXTER's descendants over the years. Unfortunately, I found some of the wrong people when I first started placing queries. One problem was that Joseph's son, Marvin, had a son, John DEXTER, b1833, and there was another John DEXTER, born around the same time. I finally got them straight. The other one was a soldier in the Civil War, and my John wasn't. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (on Lists for 8 years; now an Administrator for 8 Lists) * I cannot prove that Joseph (and Marvin) DEXTER was my ancestor. Marvin's son, John, married Mary CLARK from Westport, MA, in CT and they lived on the DEXTER farm in Killingly and had 3 daughters. Only one survived to adulthood, and she became Mrs. Clara YOUNG. Around 1885 John and Mary left CT and moved to Melrose, MA. In 1892 they adopted a little girl, and that little girl would become my grandmother. My "educated guess" is that Mrs. Clara YOUNG had a pregnancy in the summer of 1888 without the benefit of her husband. So my grandmother's adoptive parents were also her grandparents. This is a long, complicated story which I've told on the Lists for several years. (Mrs. Mary (CLARK) DEXTER was the only child of James CLARK and Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) (LAVARE) CLARK of Westport, MA, who both had ties to Little Compton, RI. Another long story told on the Lists before.) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names.
