    3. I have to wonder if the listing of Rogers, RI is a typo and this man actually is a native of Foster, RI? Nina Hollifield Posted on NORCAL list this morning: Stockton Daily Argus Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA 1-5 May 1860 ************************* Tuesday, 1 May 1860 SINGULAR DEATH -- A Coroner's inquest was held over the body of John FOSTER Sunday night. It appears that he was sitting in front of the Saddler Shop of Mr. MILLER, on Main street, about 8 o'clock, a short time, when he entered the door and seated himself on a chair near the entrance, when he was seen to fall back on the floor apparently in great agony from difficulty of breathing. Dr. DOWNEY was immediately called in, but death soon released the suffering man from his agony. We are somewhat surprised that the coroner did not summon Dr. DOWNEY, as it is usual to secure the testimony of the attending physicians on such occasions, as they know the symptoms better than can be explained to a non-attending physician by an unprofessional man. The jury decided the deceased came to his death from a disease of the heart. Opium was found in his pockets. He had been talking of dying for several days; had complained of a fluttering in his breast; and on the day of his death had said he had engaged his coffin. He was aged about 50 years. He was a native of Rogers, R.I., which town was named after his father. He had been educated as a physician; but the practice being distasteful to him, he became a sailor, and had lived a long time in Central America, South America, and the Sandwich Islands. He is said to have been a well educated man. He had resided in this city about 1 year, a portion of the time working in the saddler shop of Mr. MILLER. He had evidently been tired of life for some time, judging from expressions at various times that had fallen from his lips.
