    3. If you can find the Christmas Tree Shop and go past fast food restaurants like McD and Wendy's it would be about a mile on your right in a little shopping mall. I belong to alittle Compton and Portsmouth Historical Societies and I know Mr. Hall. Pres. of PHS would probably have some good books but when I've looked they were out of print, probably in libraries. When you go to Newport go to the Newport Historical Society Library, they have an excellent librarian, Bert Lippincott, and collection. ----- Original Message ----- From: "CAROLYN SCHWAB" <piermonarchs@verizon.net> To: <rigenweb@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 6:42 AM Subject: Re: [RI] Book on Portsmouth > You must be a cousin. 3. "PHOTO DETECTIVE" MAUREEN TAYLOR TO LECTURE The Westerly Historical Society and the Friends of Westerly Library will host a free lecture at the Westerly Library on Saturday, June 7th at 1:00 pm. Guest lecturer, Maureen A. Taylor has a penchant for old photos. As the author of Picture Rhode Island: Images from Everyday Life, 1850-2006, she has dusted off moments in time and illuminated Rhode Island's glory days - bustling commercial centers, stately architectural gems, life on the water, and pastoral farmland. Ms. Taylor will share her secrets of how to identify the time and other details in old photo images. A former archivist and picture editor for the Rhode Island Historical Society, she has also been a consultant to the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society. She is the author of "Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs," and is the contributing editor of "Photo Detective" at Family Tree magazine. Family historians often overlook the evidence sitting in their photo albums. Using case studies and examples, this special presentation illustrates how to read clues in pictures taken in Rhode Island and the United States. Attendees are welcome to bring along some of their mystery photographs for Ms. Taylor to identify. Copies of Picture Rhode Island will be available. For more information, contact the Westerly Library at 401-596-2877. Driving directions are available from the Library's Web site at http://www.westerlylibrary.org/

    1. [RI] James Braman, North Kingstown, RI > Voluntown, CT
    2. Joann H. Nichols
    3. I am still seeking information on MY James Braman with a wife Elizabeth. In 1729 he purchases property in Voluntown, CT; his former residence stated as North Kingstown, RI. They had seven children, Elizabeth, born 8 March 1730, John, born 18 Aug. 1731, James, born 13 Oct. 1732, Anna, born 28 Aug. 1734, Thomas, born 25 May 1736, Benjamin, born 6 June 1738, Esther, born 1 Feb. 1740. Esther is my ancestor, she married Ebenezer Herrick on 10 Aug. 1759 in Preston, New London Co., CT. MY James Braman died by Nov. 1739, so Esther was born after he died. All of James Braman and Elizabeth (--?--)'s children were born in Voluntown. He is NOT the James Braman who was married to Elizabeth Carpenter and had children Solomon and Sarah. Sarah was born in 1731 in RI, after MY James Braman and Elizabeth were living in CT. Yesterday I discovered online Westerly Deeds, Vol. 6, while Googling "James Braman." Here's an item related to a James Braman: Pages 107-108, James Braman Jr. and Elizabeth his wife of North Kingstown, Mason, to Palmer Cleveland of North Kingstown, Taylor, 78 & frac12{???]; A bounded by: land in possession of Benjamin Braman, Daniel Brown late Decd, land of John Lewis in possession of William Lewis, March 13, 1729/30. Witnesses: James Helme and Sands Helme. At first I thought this could be MY James Braman because of the date of sale and the fact that he purchased property in Voluntown on 25 April 1729. But after thinking about it, probably this, too, refers to the James Braman married to Elizabeth Carpenter. There is also a deed on Pages 185-186 for Benjamin Braman and Martha his wife, Laborer, to Joseph Enos 75 A bounded: John Bently, Palmer Cleveland, Wm Lewis, May 16, 1732. Witnesses: Wm Watson and John Braman. The list of children born to James and Jane (Babcock) Braman includes the James said to have married Elizabeth Carpenter; it also includes a Benjamin Braman who marries a Martha Hall. MY James Braman and wife Elizabeth also had a son Benjamin. ACCCCHHHH! Could the idea that the James Braman who married Elizabeth Carpenter being the son of James and Jane, be wrong? Could my James Braman be that son? Which James Braman had the occupation of Mason (according to the deed)? Joann Nichols, jnichols1930@verizon.net
