    1. Re: [RI] Question
    2. Sherri Quental
    3. Fall River is in Massachusetts, right on the RI border. There's an interesting bit of historical info about MA/RI boundary disputes involving Fall River (http://homepage.mac.com/joepowers/mill/rhode.html). Not sure how accurate the info on that page is, but I do remember reading something along those lines in a book about the history of the City and the fact that it causes confusion for genealogical researchers at times. 1. Re: [RI] Patenaude
    2. Frank, There is a death record at NEHGS for an Edouard Patenaude, died 24 Aug 1907, 61 Mason Street, Fall River, MA of Cholera. The record says he is 40 and single and not 50 and married as yours should be. It gives parents as Napoleon Patenaude and Desina Bermier, both born Canada; interment Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River on August 25. Informant is given as Napoleon Patenaude ---- Frank Patnaude <F.Patnaude@comcast.net> wrote: ============= Good evening List, I am still trying to connect Edouard Patenaude born May 1856 per 1900 census, married to Alphonsine Rose Menard. They married in 1876 in MA and then moved to Rhode Island. They were in Pawtucket and then went to Central Falls, RI. Edouard died between 1900 and 1910, most likely in Central Falls since that is where Rose is living in 1810 with their daughter and her husband. Thank you, Frank Odenton, MD

    3. Linda, Thank you for the information. All I know is Edouard was in the 1900 census and not in the 1910 but his wife was. So he died between 1900 and 1910. That is all I have. I wish there was more. WE are not even sure who his parents are. We are guessing at this time. I do not know what cemetery he is buried in. Most of my Patenaude/Patnaude relatives are buried in Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket and this is where lived. I checked the RI cemetery database and came up with nothing. I checked the RI tombstone and again nothing. It is very frustrating to live so far away. Many of my immediate family are buried in St Ann's and I have not been there since my father died in Korea in 1952. 3. Hi Frank, Fall River is in Bristol Co,  MA.  You can Google Maps for Fall River and it will give you both satellite and regular map views plus the state.  In the even you were to Google a town or city name of which there were several in a variety of states, since you know where in general you are looking for your family you could eliminate those that were located far from your search area. Just Googling "What county Fall River" will give your the county & state, usually a Wikipedia result.  My favorite map site is Multimaps since many of their maps, or at least the ones that I've been interested in, have "Birds eye" views which bring you down to an altitude of about 1,000 feet or less and you can do a 360 degree rotation around the point of interest on the map.  http://www.multimap.com/ Linda --- On Sun, 9/7/08, Frank Patnaude <F.Patnaude@comcast.net> wrote: From: Frank Patnaude <F.Patnaude@comcast.net> Subject: [RI] Question To: RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, September 7, 2008, 5:52 PM Good evening list, Fall River, Is Fall River in Rhode Island or Mass? 3. Frank, St. Francis, Pawt. is listed in the RI Historical Cemeteries Transcription Project.  Searches are via surname and not all names in the cemetery are included in the database as they are looking for volunteers to go out and check the cemetery which is quite large in terms of the number of burials.  Results pages will list the individual by surname, given name, age sometimes,  DOB if in the records and DOD also if in the records followed by an identifier code.  Sometimes women will have their maiden names in ( ).  It all depends on what was in the records that were transcribed.  People buried in St. Francis will have PW003 after their entry.  While the majority of burials are Irish, there are also French Canadian and Italian burials there.  The cemetery is essentially full and closed to new burials unless one's family owns a grave site that still has spaces; no new burial plots are available. The description of the cemetery from the cemeteries transcription site says the following: "four books of records contain name, burial date, age, sect & lot #    book #1 is at the diocese office in Providence book #2 starts 12 Nov 1898, about 40 names per page -   pg 11: 12 Nov 1898 - pg 50 14 Nov 1899  (abt 1600/year)  pg 100  6 Jan 1901,   pg 200 24 May 1903, pg 300 17 Nov 1905,  pg 400 28 May 1908, pg 500 10 Feb 1911, pg 600 23 Jul 1913, pg 700  7 Feb 1916, pg 800  1 Jun 1918, pg 900  Jul 1919, pg 1000 18 Oct 1921, pg 1100 21 Jul 1924, pg 1103 end     about 40,000 entries                                                                  Very little of this cemetery has been completed. There are many late 19th century Irish stones with information on where in Ireland the people came from. We are looking for a volunteer to record these.         This cemetery has not been recorded." Here is the link to the search page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/ One thing you must have when working with cemeteries owned by the Diocese of Providence is a death date.  Month and year at the minimum otherwise they can't find your burial.  The Diocese keeps all their records by date of death.  There is no cross referencing system in place to find a burial if all you have is a name. Unless the staffing has changed since the last time I was in or called the Catholic Cemeteries Office at Cathedral Sq. in Providence, it's a waste of time to contact them.  I submitted a request in person at the CCO on the form they supplied looking for a burial.  The woman behind the counter took it and deposited it in one of those hanging wall pockets.  It's probably still right there today collecting dust right where she put it that afternoon.  5 years & I'm still waiting.  The people in the CCO were very unhelpful and unpleasant to work with.  One gets the impression that by going there and making a request, you are greatly imposing on them. Your best chance is to call the cemetery directly.  All my dealings with the staff there have been positive.  They are nice people and will try to help you but again you need to know at least the month and year of death because of the way the records are kept. Here is the contact phone # for the cemetery - 1-401-724-3130. Check the entries at Find A Grave on the off chance that someone may have entered your individual into the database there. Here is the link for the St. Francis page at Find A Grave: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=104478&CScn=st.+francis&CScntry=4&CSst=42& If all else fails and you still need DOD in order to check with the cemetery, try posting at the RI Providence County board at Ancestry.  There is a researcher there who often looks things up at the RI Archives for folks.  RI Archives will have deaths from 1856 to 1957.  On January 1, the end year will increase to 1958.  Additionally with respect to vitals, they have marriages and births 1856 to 1907, increasing to 1908 on 1 Jan 2009. You could also try contacting Archives directly but I know they are very short staffed and I don't know how rapidly they can respond to inquires but here is their info: Rhode Island State Archives 337 Westminster Street Providence, Rhode Island 02903 Telephone: (401) 222-2353 Fax: (401) 222-3199 Email: reference@sec.state.ri.us Web: www.state.ri.us/archives/ ~~website is poorly designed and pretty much useless from a genealogy point of view. Open to the public Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Good Luck! 3. Hi, Frank, Most Irish burials in St. Francis are online at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ussnei/StFranPaw.htm St. Francis is a diocesan cemetery and records are held at the diocesan cemetery office: Diocesan Cemeteries - Director: Rev. He's about 63 and I think he has a brother Wayne. Clifford Jr and wife Carole divorced and she remarried his cousin Richard! Both Clifford Jr and Richard worked at the family business at the time, East Greenwich Dairy. Here is that story and obit for Richard's mother, Virginia C. Johnson. PROVIDENCE --- A North Kingstown man has been ordered to pay his former wife $25,000 in damages for calling her a "whore" in front of a crowd waiting to be seated at a popular restaurant. Carole Johnson of Cranston was awarded $5,000 for the humiliation and embarrassment she suffered as a result of the name-calling incident, and $20,000 in punitive damages by a jury in Superior Court Wednesday. Clifford Johnson, her former spouse, also will have to pay $3,850 in interest, for a total of $28,850 under the terms of the judgment. Carole Johnson sued Clifford Johnson for slander after the name-calling episode at the Twin Oaks restaurant in Cranston on Aug. 29, 1986. The case was tried before Judge John P. Bourcier. Carole Johnson was married to Clifford Johnson during the 1960s. She divorced him and married his cousin, Richard Johnson, according to testimony during the trial. At the time, Richard and Clifford were involved in the family business, East Greenwich Dairy. The divorce and subsequent marriage caused a rift in the family, and Richard left the business. Later, Carole and Richard were divorced, and she began to date another man. According to her lawyer, J. Ronald Fishbein, Clifford Johnson came to her in the early 1980s and wanted to reunite, and she agreed. They didn't remarry, but they lived together, he said. After about a year and a half, "he ditched her," Fishbein said. Brought divorce action. Carole Johnson then hired Fishbein, who brought an action in Family Court for a divorce, alleging that Carole and Clifford were bound together in a common-law marriage. The judge refused to accept the allegation, and the divorce petition was denied. The case was appealed to the state Supreme Court, but Carole Johnson lost the appeal. According to testimony at the trial, there were 50 to 75 people in the lobby of the restaurant when Johnson started calling his former wife names and asserting that she was costing him a lot of money. A waiter testified that he heard Johnson call her a "whore" again, after he had been escorted outside. Legally, the word whore is slanderous and defamatory in itself because it suggests that a person has committed a criminal act by engaging in prostitution. Truth is an absolute defense against such an allegation, except when the word is uttered maliciously. Fishbein sought to establish that the utterance was malicious by presenting the testimony of the waiter, who said he heard Johnson call her a "whore" a second time. Joseph A. Keough, Clifford Johnson's lawyer, tried to establish that what his client had said about Carole Johnson was true. Carole Johnson testified that she was pregnant with Richard Johnson's child before her divorce from Clifford became final. Keough tried to convince the jury that Carole Johnson's husband-to-husband-to-boyfriend-to-husband relationships established the truth of Clifford Johnson's utterance. The jury disagreed. Barbara Kiely, wife of retired Superior Court Judge Francis J. Kiely, was the jury forewoman. Copyright Providence Journal/Evening Bulletin Jan 31, 1992 OBITUARY........ VIRGINIA C. JOHNSON, 88, of Oaklawn Avenue, formerly of Blueberry Lane, died Saturday at home. She was the wife of the late Melvin H. Johnson. Born in Brockton, Mass., a daughter of the late Charles E. and Elvira (Olson) Lucas, she lived in Cranston most of her life. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Cranston Garden Club. She leaves a daughter, Lois B. Bogda of Cranston; two sons, Richard M. Johnson of Stuart, Fla., and Robert Paul Johnson of Berkeley, Calif.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
