We would appreciate your opinion. http://www.fpyork.info A "memorialization website" lists all the traditional information on a cemetery website. However, each person has their own webpage. We are asking families to submit remembrances, links, photos, etc. Veterans receive flags. Fire Department members get logos. We expect to add church membership and other civic group recognition. Right now the AFGS has used books for sale on their site and the Notre Dame in soft cover @ $20 is one of the offerings. It might sound like a bit of $$ but when you consider that to purchase a birth, marriage or death certificate from RI Health Dept, Vital Records is now $20, a whole book for the same price isn't so bad. Although your marriage is early enough to be at RI Archives, as I mentioned in my other reply and should only be $2 or $3 to obtain if that's all you want. http://www.afgs.org/lists_1.html Specials - List 1 Books For sale a large assortment of used books Book # 365 Les Mariages de Notre Dame (1873 - 1979) Central Falls, RI SC {soft cover} $20.00 Lisa is also correct about the counties. RI doesn't have government at the county levels but the state is divided up into 5 counties non the less. I mentioned posting at the county board, in this case Providence County which is where Central Falls is located, only because there are those & I'm guilty of this, who check only the county board of their interest and might only rarely venture into the "Unknown" board. In the instance of this post, because it gatewayed to the RI List of which I am a member, I got it in my in box that was, did I wind-up looking at the "Unknown" board. as I said, I'm guilty of usually only looking at the county board...in my case Providence County and rarely venturing onto the Unknown board and I probably have company in this tendency. Along the same line, I've also noticed that there are those who rarely leave the message boards at Ancestry's sister site, Genealogy.com so I will usually post at both sets of message boards...Ancestry/RootsWeb and Genealogy so as to increase my chances of getting help. Anyway, check out the sale at AFGS as it's usually $55 for the Notre Dame marriages which is two volumes going up to 1988. Evening Judy, Thanks for the info. I live in RI and have been to the AFGS. I was excited when they purchased the church building they are located in and I wish I had the time to volunteer and take part in the work going on to make the church truly "home". The most we've been able to do is support the building fund with contibutions in memory of some of our ancestors. Unfortunately, the AFGS doesn't do research questions for folks. A personal visit is required for research so I didn't mention the AFGS in my post reply. Buying the Notre Dame book was suggested in another reply but that can be costly unless you happen to catch a sale when they are replacing some books. Then you can buy whatever books are available fairly reasonably. The soft covers are usually very reasonable $ 10 - 20. Even the hard covers aren't too far out of reach. I just checked the site and right now they are selling some used books including the Notre Dame for $20 which is was a BMD certificate now costs in RI so not a bad deal at all. I think I will post that info, maybe Madeline might be interested given the price especially if the family stayed in the area and their children might have also married in Notre Dame. You should consider joining the Quebec-researh mailing list at rootsweb. Someone there may own that book. Regarding the maiden name question - This would not be a Catholic thing, but a French-Canadian one. It's likely that the women were listed by their maiden names, but there's no guarantee that the 2 godparents were husband and wife. There is no requirement that the godparents be a married couple, but they are probably relatives of the parents, rather than friends as you might find today. I would like to comment on the other message posted posted in response to your question. I've been on this list for more than 10 years, and this is the first time I've ever seen a message about posting to the county boards. In RI, we don't have county government, so we tend not to think in those terms. Official records will be found at the city/town level or at the state level. There are no county government offices. In reading the exchange here so far, I don't know if the French Catholic repertoire format was followed in the US in churches that were primarily French Canadian congregations. That is, listing a woman with her maiden name even though she was married. So for Marie Louise Paquette & Thomas Champagne, unless you have evidence that they were indeed husband and wife in 1903 at the time of the baptism of Nectaire Thomas Joseph Gousie, it would probably be wisest to consider that they were each single people. Should it work out that no one with access to the book of marriages for Notre Dame, CF answers y this post, you can always contact the RI State Archives. Hello, I hope this is of interest to some of you. I know it isn't genealogy related but it is about US history so I thought I'd forward it to the list. I'll just paste the press release below: On Tuesday, December 2, at 7:00 pm, local author Meredith Mason Brown will be at the Westerly Public Library to talk about his new book on Daniel Boone. Mr. Brown, a Stonington resident, has written a book titled "Frontiersman: Daniel Boone and the Making of America", published in 2008. He will talk about Daniel Boone and sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at the library, courtesy of the Other Tiger bookstore. Born in 1734, Daniel Boone is probably most famous as one of the first settlers of Kentucky. In 1775, he blazed a road through the Cumberland Gap and founded one of the first English-speaking settlements beyond the Appalachian Mountains, named Boonesborough. He then served as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War, fighting American Indians who supported the British. In 1778 he was captured by Shawnee Indians and ended up being adopted into the tribe. He escaped and continued to fight to defend the new Kentucky settlements. He was later elected to three terms in the Virginia General Assembly, and, in 1799, moved to Missouri, where he lived until his death in 1820. Daniel Boone was a legend in his own lifetime, due to an account of his adventures that was published in 1784. However, it turns out that many things believed about him are actually myths: he didn’t wear coonskin caps, he read and wrote better than many frontiersmen, and he was not the first settler in Kentucky. Meredith Mason Brown’s book has been very well-reviewed, with one reviewer stating that of the published books on Daniel Boone, it is the most engrossing and well written of them all. He conducted some of his research for the book at the Westerly Public Library, and is showing his appreciation by giving this talk there. Programs at the library are free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible. For more information call the Westerly Public Library Reference Desk at 401-596-2877, Ext. 3. I may have found the answer to my previous question. Newspaper (telegraphic summary in Maryland) from 16 April 1883: Olney Burgess of Foster, RI while making a social call upon Daniel & Henry Burlingame at Killingly, CT on Saturday last, suddenly drew a revolver and shot Daniel, slightly wounding him. In the struggle for the pistol, Henry was dangerously wounded, a bullet entering his nostril. Burgess returned to Rhode Island where he was arrested. He was locked up, but died in a few hours from self-administered poison. Three years ago, he shot a man, blinding him for life. ======================== >From my files, this Olney Burgess was oldest son of Gideon & Phebe (Williams) Burgess of Foster Al Rose **************AOL Search: Your one stop for directions, recipes and all other Holiday needs.
