    3. Don: Thanks loads for your reply! I felt that GENWEB would be the same as RootsWeb, but just wanted to verify it. Cheers also. BILL -------------------------------------------------------------- Yes Bill. It is the USGW policy. Rootsweb would certainly move in if this started. That couldn't be good. You can take some liberties however with your signature lines. This isn't a grreen light to say, "for sale" or anything like that in your signature line. <GRIN> Cheers Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Waterhouse" <wm.r.waterhouse@mailstation.com> To: <RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 30, 2006 7:12 PM Subject: [RIGENWEB] LOOKING FOR INFO > Can anyone please tell me what GENWEB's policy is on placing adver- > tising on their Lists? 3. Have you seen the 1910 Census which has Clarence Crapo(6)RI and Andrew Crapo(3)RI as inmates in the Children's Home on Robeson St. in Fall River, MA? You might try emailing the archivist at the RI Archives for a lookup on their birth records. It shows their father born MA and mother born England. 3. Can anyone please tell me what GENWEB's policy is on placing adver- tising on their Lists? RootsWeb prohibits advertising of merchandise & services where an exchange of money takes place, on all of their Lists, & I am wondering if GENWEB has this policy also. This is an excellent policy, as without it the Lists would become no more than a giant Internet Flea Market. Thanks for any info. BILL in CT -END-

    1. Great Gales (part 5 of 5)
    2. Beth Hurd
    3. continued from part 4. "The entire Rhode Island coastline suffered untold destruction, but the fury of the 1815 catastrophe inflicted most damage upon the wharves which then lined Narragansett Bay's busy waterfront. Valuable cargoes, loading gear and ships' stores were swept into oblivion. In Providence, very few of the business establishments that lined the shores escaped the deadly force of the wind and the power of the waves. All downtown streets were blocked with an impassable accumulation of casks, lumber, spars and scows. Many homes were carried from the foundations, while from other dwellings, every article of furniture, clothing and food was lost. In all the towns and hamlets of Rhode Island the wreckage of roofs, chimneys and fences cluttered the streets, strewn with fallen trees and tangled foliage. Here and there, tall steeples were dashed to the ground under the force of the express-like gale, but, in Providence, the tall graceful spire of the First Baptist Church wavered, bent to the blast, but did not fall. This noble landmark is today standing nobly erect, the survivor of two devastating hurricanes and of the gale of slightly lesser intensity that pounded upon these shores in September, 1869. Fortunately, the loss of life, in 1815, was comparatively small, but that may be accounted for by the fact that, in those days, few people resided along the unprotected shores of Rhode Island where so many met their fate during the disaster in 1938. It has been observed that, in spite of the terrific loss sustained by the enterprising citizens, in 1815, active steps were taken immediately to clear away the wreckage, repair damage and start afresh. New business organizations were founded, manufacturing took on a new lease of life, and stunned communities entered another era with hope and with courage. Now we know of at least one instance where history has certainly repeated itself." for more info on the "Great Gale" (the word hurricane was not yet used), and its effects, which included destruction of lighthouses, damage to churches, some of which were rebuilt further inland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_September_Gale_of_1815

    1. Great Gales (part 4 of 5)
    2. Beth Hurd
    3. continued from part 3. "At noon, after two hours of lashing devastation, the wind suddenly changed to the southwest, calmed rapidly, and the sun shone upon now believable ruin and destruction. During the height of the Great Gale of 1815, the water had climbed approximately twelve feet above the average limit of flood tide. Swirling, rushing, irresistible waters had extended well up toward Benefit Street to the East, and nearly as far as Aborn Street to the West. When this hurricane lunged up Narragansett Bay, a great East India ship, the 'Ganges', owned by Brown & Ives, a craft of more than 520 tons, parted from her moorings and crashed into the bridge at Market Square. Through the bridge she hurtled in mad flight, followed by a panicky procession of small boats and wreckage. The bowsprit of the 'Ganges' pierced the upper story of the Washington Insurance Company building on the Square, and she finally ended her sudden voyage on the shores of the old Cove, a hopeless wreck, never again to raise her sails. Smith Hill, just back of the Cove, and the banks of the Moshassuck River, were littered with wreckage carried inland by the flood. Twenty-seven ships of various types and sizes also went through the bridge, little of which remained after the waters had receded, and the wind had abated. One sloop went as far as North Providence, and another made its way up Eddy Street somewhere between Westminster and Weybosset Streets, and remained there when the waters receded like a ship in a drydock, its proud mast towering above a three-story building." continued in part 5.

    1. Indian River - where was it?? (Ca 1650s, Kingstowne area)
    2. In researching the role of Richard Smith in the Atherton land deals, I found that Richard ended up with a parcel of land such that he owned "all of the land between Narragansett Bay on the east, the Indian Road on the west, the Cove on the north, and the Annaquatucket River to the south. " (Quote from the Updyck genealogy by Charles Wilson Opdyke). I know where the bay is and the Annaquatucket River but where was the Indian River? Also does anyone know to which "cove" this quote refers? Thanks, Donna in RI

    3. Claire - At this point, you should check with your internet provider, and tell them you are not receiving rootsweb.com mail - and maybe yahoo mail as well. There is a major problem with AOL and rootsweb that everyone at rootsweb is aware of, but maybe there are problems with other internet providers as well that they are not aware of. I have seen many messages from you about this problem, so your messages are getting posted to the list - they are just not getting back to you. Good luck - I used to have this problem at least 2ce a year when I was using Juno. Couldn't complain too much, though, since it was a free service. 1. Lottie Mae Lamphere - death record missing ????
    2. Bill Wright
    3. Jack, Henry and Lottie M. Lamphere appear to be listed in the 1920 census for South Kingstown. He was 38 and she was 39. They were living at #28 Ridge Street. Two daughters are listed: Gladis M. (16) and Josephine (14). Henry was a house carpenter. Gladis M. was a sales lady in a dry goods store. This narrows the time of Lottie's death from the date of the census enumeration 9-10 Jan 1920 to 29 Nov 1921. Does Henry's death record state that he was a widower and how do you know it is correct or do you have another source that says he was a widower? Have you checked the death records at South Kingstown? Have you found Gladis and Josephine in the 1930 census? Bill Wright
