The Rhode Island Genealogical Society (RIGS) research trip will be on March 15th. (Wednesday) to the Connecticut State Library in Hartford or the Godfrey Library in Middletown. We hope to also offer the Connecticut Historical Society (www.chs.org) as a choice, but they are doing some renovations and are not sure at this time when they will be completed. If this is of interest to you please be sure to let Helen Smith know and she will contact you if this choice becomes available. Departure from the East Providence Park and Ride on Route 44 will be 7:15 am and from the Warwick Mall Parking Lot near Firestone across from Macy's will be at 7:30 am. Return should be around 7 pm. Due to the rising cost of fuel the cost of the bus has increased and we will be increasing the cost of the trip to $22 per person. We suggest you bring your lunch. The library does have a small lunchroom with limited snacks. We hope you can all join us and bring a friend. We welcome non-members. For reservations send a check made out to RIGS for $22 to Helen Smith, 530 West Reach Drive, Jamestown, RI 02835. Along with your check, be sure to include your name, telephone and email address, which pickup point you will use, and your choice of venue (Godfrey and the other destinations are too far apart for the bus to be able to go back and forth). If you have questions, Helen Smith can be reached at hhsctc@aol.com.

Frank: Rather than a general question try poting information you are looking for. That will narrow it down so that many replies will result. Lots of people monitor the list on a regular basis and have access to many different Books and databases not necessarily Briggs researchers but will ing to help find answers. Steve

Hi Listers, Would someone please tell me the exact address to post quiries on this page. Every time I send one it bounces back with some message about "domaine name missing or malformed". I had to resort to "reply" to try again. My initial question was in regard to posting a photo. I have a photo from early in the 20th century of what appears to be a reunion of some military men, only two of whom I can identify. I know nothing of their symbols, medals, etc. Is this list an appropriate venue for posting the picture for piossible identification of any of the above? Thank you for your help! To: Brenda, Mike & all Listers: As part of my FEE-FREE Lookup service, I can give you the incorp- oration date for any City or Town in RI....as well as for all the other 49 States. I'm easy to reach at: <wm.r.waterhouse@mailstation.com> BILL in CT -------------------------------------------------------------- Mike, I often have the same thought on birth places. So many times I have had to go back to look at dates to find that Scituate or Foster had not been incorporated at that time. I record the information as it is written in the document and cite that document w/ the information. If there is conflicting information I further cite it. I have just finished reading "The History of Scituate, RI" by Hedley Smith (1976) which is an elaboration on Cyrus Walker's "History of Scituate" (1902?). In approx. 1705 the first divisions of land in what would be Scituate. "The Act of Incorporation was passed by the General Assembly on February 20, 1731; the boundary lines were completed on March 18, and the first Town Meeting was canned March 18th, at the Angell Tavern in South Scituate...for the election of town officers, deputies, and jurymen." (pg. 53). Formal action to divide Scituate into two towns began December 25, 1780. "On August 24, 1781, the General Assembly granted the first petition, dividing the Scituate territory into two halves vertically."(pg. 93). This is given as the date of incorporation for the Town of Foster. I'm sure you can find a source that dates all towns and villages. This is a start for you. I can provide some information on villages of Scituate, but not of Smithfield, should you need it. Good luck! When documenting my ancestry from RI, I often get confused regarding what to put for the birth/marriage/death location, for example: Birth: 1758 should the location be Scituate, Providence, RI or Scituate, RI or Scituate, Providence County, RI or Scituate Township, Providence Plantation, RI and there are others to choose from. I know that it all has to do with the dates that these towns incorporated. Towns such as Foster, Smithfield, Burrilville, Glocester and even villages of Smithfield, for example, Greenville, Spragueville, and Tarkiln (sp?). I hoping someone can direct me to a source that puts dates to all of these locations and connects the villages to the townships and to the counties as well. If it is of any interest, growing up in Southern RI, I knew of many people named Jacques.
