    3. A family of Cadys from Providence, Ri and Killingly, Ct. went to Cleveland, Ohio - in fact one of these Cadys married into the Cleveland family of Ohio fame. Calvin Cady is mentioned in the Killingly family CT Genealogy. I beleive there were two or three of them. This George W. Cady - could be named after George Waterman Cady - who was of Providence, RI. his ancestry is not rightly known or is suspect but harks back to Providence. There is a man who used to be on this site who was interested in that line. I have a photo of the stone at the North Burial Ground of George W. Cady. he was probably descended from Capt Johnathan Cady of Providence,RI anyone who can help this man please respond. Jack Scott Hanover,Pa. Descendant of Sarah Cady (1801-1849) probably daughter of Schubail Cady and Anna Earle. ----- Original Message ----- From: <richard@pricegen.com> To: <CADY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 13, 2006 6:36 PM Subject: [CADY ] Paternity of Henry Clay Cady, b. 1852 Muscatine County, Iowa > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Cady, Sheeley, May > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WNH.2ACIB/618 > > Message Board Post: > > Henry Clay Cady and his twin brother George W. Cady were born in Muscatine County, Iowa in 1852. Their father is believed to have died about the time the twins were born and was not married to the mother, Mary Margaret Sheeley. His name was Calvin Cady. Little is known about Calvin Cady and we are interested in additional information about him. We believe that he may have been a teamster who moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Chickasaw County, Iowa in the early 1850s. His widow, Nessy (May) Cady, lived in Chickasaw County with her children in 1860, 1870, and 1880, according to the U.S. Federal Censuses. Their children included: Eliza, Walter, Permelia, Ruby, and Frances. Any help you can provide about the family of Calvin Cady will be much appreciated. Another possibility is Calvin Cady, also a teamster, who had settled at Des Moines, Iowa in the early 1850s. He died during the Civil War time period and left a widow named Elizabeth and children Olive, Demaris, and La Henry. > > > ============================== > New! Family Tree Maker 2005. 1. RICHARD HARTNETT
    2. BILL DORGAN
    3. Listers: I am looking for information about RICHARD HARTNETT of Providence, Rhode Island. Sometimes, but not often, HARTNETT is spelled HODNET. In the RI Historical Society Library on Hope Street in Providence, there is a manuscript of a list of immigrants who decided to become citizens through classes in libraries, schools, etc for 1917-1918, the war years. In 1917 RICHARD HARTNETT, age 48, living at 17 1/2 Peter Street, Providence, Rhode Island went to these "Citizenship" Classes". He was accompanied by PATRICK DORGAN, age 56 and his two sons, DAVID A. DORGAN, age 22 and MICHAEL J. DORGAN, age 28. QUESTION: 1. RICHARD HARTNETT is undoubtedly related to PATRICK DORGAN and his wife MARY CATHERINE HARTNETT. But how? Patrick Dorgan's wife was Mary Catherine Hartnett. I believe that RICHARD HARTNETT was perhaps a cousin of Mary Catherine Hartnett-Dorgan. Family lore also says that his wife, Mary Hartnett, already had a sister, Elizabeth and other relatives (cousins?) in Rhode Island. Patrick stayed with these Hartnetts and found work in Providence as a laborer. His wife, Mary Catherine Hartnett, and their five children: Anne Theresa, Michael Joseph, Patrick Francis, David Andrew, and William Joseph followed him eight months later in June 1896. Any help with the HARTNETTs of Rhode Island greatly appreciated!!! 3. For those who might be interested, the mural pictured in the Journal's story was painted by a WPA artist, I forget his name and for all my growing up years hung in the Wakefield, RI Post Office. When the post office was sold by the federal government, the mural went to a historical society in the South County area. I remember looking at it as a child when I was with a grown up getting stamps or sending something off. It was a history lesson, in some ways, more effective than books. -----Original Message----- From: Gloria [mailto:gjs11054@cox.net] Sent: Sunday, March 12, 2006 8:58 AM To: RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [RIGENWEB] DeWolf-Slave Trade in RI For those who are interested, today's Providence Sunday Journal begins a story on Rhode Island and the slave trade. http://www.projo.com/extra/2006/slavery/ Gloria ==== RIGENWEB Mailing List ==== Kent County RIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~rikent/ Search the RIGenWeb Pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/search.html

You are all doing a great job. I am a Providence native and have many family members to trace and am doing that while I volunteer at NEHGS. I will call upon you when the brick wall appears on my family searches. As former academic dean at Katharine Gibbs School in Boston, I am working on Mrs. Gibbs and her school in Providence. The centennial of the school's founding is 2011, and no one has done work on her genealogy yet. I have some gaps in the genealogy and do not know whether you might be able to provide suggestions about how to proceed. I have three questions: marriage of William Gibbs and K(C)atherine M. Ryan, the schooling of the two sons, and where the elder William Gibbs worked. The first is about the marriage of William GIBBS and K(C)atharine M. RYAN. I have checked the RI marriages for 1879-1899 and IL marriages for the same time without success. The second concerns the sons William Howard GIBBS born in 1897 and James Gordon Gibbs born 17 Jan 1900. According to KGS lore, the sons went to LaSalle Academy, but a check of their archives was negative. My next step will be Cranston Public Schools, but Cranston did not become a city until 1910. Is there an archive other than CPS? Both sons were in WW I, but when I checked the enlistment cards, I did not find them. Neither the 1900 nor 1910 federal census has the correct William Gibbs listed, but the 1905 RI census has William and Katharine Gibbs living at 110 Albert Street in Cranston. He works as a watchmaker on Westminster Street at the corner of Mathewson. It seems to me that this might be Tilden-Thurber. Does anyone know whether there is a way to find out exactly where he was working. Attempts to find out more about Tilden-Thurber have not been successful. I can, of course, include more information, but I am aware that I have asked for quite a bit of help here. 2. Donna Potter
    3. In doing some research on the Peleg Brown family, I ran across an item in an old newspaper, the Rhode Island American of January 28, 1814. They had published a letter written by someone to a family member stationed at Fort Trumbull. The letter went into detail about how on the 27th of "December last" William C. Brown, son of Peleg Brown, had murdered a 4-5 year old child who lived with him. He killed the child because she was having trouble learning her alphabet. There was a description of a horrific crime, and then the writer added that the whole scene was witnessed by Brown's wife and "Baker and his wife" - none of whom did anything to stop the crime. I have been trying to find out the name of the little girl as well as any info on a trial, jail sentence, etc. There's a big gap in the births of children to William and his wife, Sally Kenyon, which may be accounted for by the fact that he could have been incarcerated, but I can find nothing else on the crime to support that. Have any of you South County history experts heard of this crime? Any info is appreciated. Donna in RI

    2. Bill Waterhouse
    3. +PRINT THIS OUT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE & TO PASS TO OTHERS+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ County Courthouses in most states are the main source for obtain- ing Vital Records & info pertinent to genealogists. But as many of us are researching in areas far distant from our place of residence; contacting Courthouses in those areas oft presents a problem. In this respect I have the County Courthouse Book; 2nd Ed. by Eliza- beth Petty Bentley which covers 3,125 Courthouses in all 50 States as well as the American Protectorates of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands. Should any listers have need for the address, phone number, & services offered by any of these various Courthouses you may contact me by E-mail as follows, & I will be pleased to share whatever info is available as a genealogist to genealogist service. I adhere to the code of: "GENEALOGY...PEO- PLE HELPING OTHER PEOPLE." *NOTE* I will always assume that genealogists are looking for Vital Records, so I will list only the con- tacts for them. However, if you wish the contacts for Land, Nat- uralization, &/or Probate Records please advise me accordingly in your request. Thank You! In addition to the Courthouse lookups; Now with the addition of the Genealogist's Address Book also by Elizabeth Petty Bentley, I am now able to offer info on the addresses, etc of National Archives, Govt Depts & Agencies, Vital Records Offices, Research Libraries, Historical & Genealogical Societies & Independent Publications. Also I can offer info in all of the above categories on a State & American Trust Territories level. Also info on some of the major Ethnic & Re- ligious Organizations & Research Centers, Lineage, Hereditary, & Patrotic Societies, & other miscellany relating to genealogy. Please realize that not every entity will be listed, & I may not be able to fulfill every request...But give me a try & I'll do my best to help you. I ask only that you be SPECIFIC in stating what info you are looking for. *NOTE: Use 'FEE-FREE LOOKUPS' for Subject line. My address & instructions for requesting follow at the end of this message. Please keep your reguests to the minimum as to wording, & do NOT include extraneous info such as your findings, etc, as I will not be doing the researching--This will be YOUR task thru the info I 'may be able' to provide you.
