Thanks, Lisa. I haven't talked to you for a long time! Hope all is well. I had already gone to "switchboard" as suggested by Elaine but found the following and didn't think it was right... St Mary's Antiochian Church 249 High St Pawtucket, RI zip code Phone: (401) 726-1202 I didn't understand the word "Antiochian" so looked that up on the Internet as well. It just didn't seem like what I was looking for. I wanted "St. Mary's" that has been in Pawtucket since 'day one." Will try your website and see what I find. Thanks to both you and Elaine for responding... For the churches, I always use the diocese website http://www.dioceseofprovidence.org/ click on parishes, the you can choose churches or cemeteries. I like this source because it will give you the websites and email addresses of the churches if they have them. When I'm in Providence, I have always stayed @ The Holiday Inn on Atwell(s) Av. It's about 2 blocks from the Archives & near the library. Not too far from the State House -- & of course, there's the multitude of great Italian restaurants there, too. Judy - born in Providence, raised in New Bedford, MA & living in OR
I live out of state, but I found the Archives to be so full of wonderful info that I just park and walk the 2 blocks. There are only 3-4 streets in that immediate area of Providence so you can get very lost. Now I agree with you on driving it as the traffic is heavy and it does get confusing. Just had to put my 2 cents in as I think the Archivces is a real treasure.l The library near that has old directories which are useful also . I am in R.I., now and parked and walked just yesterday, but not to genealogy places as I am with a friend. Once she leaves I'll be back at my usual haunts. Nancy MacKay Hattox San Diego. I live less than two hours away so never stay there, and always drive. For RI Hist. Soc., I usually find a spot nearby on the street, sometimes even out front. One way streets aren't a problem if you just realize you can probably take the next one in the direction you want -- most of the streets around the Hist. Soc. are pretty grid-like ( except for a few that dead-end unexpectedly). Coming from the north, I take 95 right down to 195 east, then Gano St. exit and loop back to Hope St. - it seems the least complicated and quickest of several options, although a bit longer on the highway. There's a nice restaurant, Rue de l'Espoir (trans. = Hope St.) just at the end of the next block south on Hope, open for lunch and dinner. Now if the Hist. Soc. would just expand their hours again and stay open on Saturdays... By the way, the RI State Highway Dept. publishes a map of RI, new every year or so, that is absolutely great -- basic to getting around there. Don't leave home without one. Jane
Lorna, If when you say, "There is also a nice little French place nearby for lunch that I keep meaning to try," you are referring to the Rue de l'Espoir on 99 Hope Street, it is a MUST on your next visit. It is just down the street from the RIHS on the same side of the street. It has THE BEST food and especially their breakfasts. When I am home visiting family and doing research I start my morning there first. Then, I'm not so hungry at lunchtime. You can read all about it here: www.therue.com . Nancy P.S. I have no interest whatsoever in the restaurant. It just happens to be my favorite and convenient. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lorna" <lornap@adelphia.net> To: <RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 22, 2006 8:40 AM Subject: [SPAM] [RIGENWEB] RE: Providence area visit >I usually stay at the Radisson on India St. It is on the same side of > the river as Brown, RIHS, etc. although not within walking distance of > them. I usually stay at the Radisson on India St. It is on the same side of the river as Brown, RIHS, etc. although not within walking distance of them. It is on the outskirts of a "marginal" area, but I have never had a problem there, the security is good, and the last time I was there the area seemed much improved. http://www.radisson.com/providenceri I've also stayed at the Old Court B&B -- it's on historic Benefit St., a very attractive walking area, lots of historic buildings, Brown U., etc. http://www.oldcourt.com/ The John Brown House is nearby, which you can tour for a great intro to the history of Providence and the Brown family. RIHS is on the edge of Brown U., in a nice area. There is a B&B right nearby, but I've never stayed there: http://www.cadyhouse.com/ There is also a nice little French place nearby for lunch that I keep meaning to try. The Marriott, Holiday Inn, Westin, etc. are on the other side of the river, the "city" side, where there is plenty of traffic. There is also the Biltmore Hotel. The RI Archives building is on this side of the river, as well, smack dab in the middle of the city with its one-way streets. Prepare to get lost if you venture over there--it can be very confusing, but you will eventually get where you're going. I usually eat take-out when I'm in Providence, as I am in the throes of research, but for a restaurant I love Chez Pascal, which is a ways out on Hope St. Have fun! Lorna in Maine

My name is Susan and I am looking for help with two names birthdays in Canada. The names are Ignace Bourget and Aglae Gaumont. They were married in Woonsocket, R.I. I need to find out who he was born to more than her, due to the fact that I believe that the Arch Bishop Bourget may have been his Uncle. He was born some where around 1848 in Quebec Canada. That is all I can find out. Thanks Susan Bourget
Pam, I have Torrey's but there are hundreds of hits. Can you narrow down the field? If you are visiting during this date, here is information on the May meeting for the Roger Williams Family Association. You don't have to be a member to attend, and the church service honors all the first families of Providence, not just the Williams family. SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2006 - 11:00 AM Founders' Day We will observe Founders' Day at First Baptist Church in America, which is located at 75 North Main Street, Providence, Rhode Island. Following the church service and a time for coffee and a tour of the historic Church for those interested, we will meet at the home of Alice Cashill at 24 Meadowbrook Drive, Barrington, Rhode Island for a social hour and meeting. Please bring a picnic lunch and a lawn chair. Directions: From Providence, take Route 195 East to Route 114 South to Barrington; left at first light at the "White Church" onto Massasoit Avenue. Follow through to New Meadow Road and go right on New Meadow Road; first right is Meadowbrook Drive. Cashill home is on the left. Also if you go the the Roger Williams Memorial ask for Ranger John McNiff who is quite knowledgeable in Rhode Island history. Enjoy your visit, Trish
If anyone has one of the following books, I would greatly appreciate a lookup and transcription or copy of the ALLEN/ALLIN/ALLYN name. Genealogical Dictionary, by Austin and New England Marriages prior to 1700, by Torrey. Pam

If you'll be in Providence, two "must-visit" places for research are the State Archives and the Rhode Island Historical Society Library. You'll be able to accomplish a LOT in a little time at both places.
