Here is the previous notice and I will add it is being done by a professional stone cutter with professional equipment. There will be a Cemetery Stone Repair Class in Narragansett on May 16th at 6:30 pm. The one hour class will be at the "Lucky Star" Historical Cemetery on Pt Judith Rd (Rt 108) in front of Stop and Shop. Best place to park is at Stop and Shop. This will be hands on repairing. For more information call Evelyn @401-789-3503 or ee mail eviewhee@verizon.net And again "Weather permitting".
FYI I looked this couple up in Arnold's Vr and came up empty. I also looked in the Gardiners of Narragansett and had nothing there. Potter and Gardiner are 2 of my major lines but this couple was a first for me. Hopefully someone else on the list has run across them. Greetings. I am trying to determine the parentage of one William Gard(i)ner and Betsy (or Elizabeth) Potter - both apparently of one of the RI Kingstowns. The information I have about this couple comes exclusively from a death record for one of their daughters - Am(e)y (Gard[i]ner) Clark - who died in Attleboro, MA in January of 1880. Her death record lists her as the daughter of William Gardner and Betsy Potter of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, and suggests she was born about 1806/07. I should probably say in advance that I am not entirely positive that the Amy Clark represented in this death record is my 4th great-grandmother, but she is likeliest candidate. Here is what we know: According to census records and other sources, my 3rd great-grandmother Susan Clark was born in 1838/39 in the Smithfield/Central Falls/Pawtucket/North Providence area of Rhode Island. We have yet to locate a birth record for her, but she married Ephraim Hunt Tappan (Toppan) - son of Abraham Tappan and Sarah Stockman of Newburyport, MA - in 1856, and settled with him in Attleboro, MA. They had three children (who survived): Charles, William, and Ella. Susan Clark had a sister named Lydia (b abt 1835-37), and although we have yet to find a birth record for her either, we know that she married Albert Briggs (the business partner of Ephraim Hunt Tappan - Susan's husband), and settled with him in Attleboro as well. According to birth records for the children of Albert Briggs and Lydia Clark she was born in South Kingstown, RI, suggesting that the family had lived there before moving to the Smithfield area. Susan Clark's obituary (from the Attleboro Sun, January, 1912) indicates she was the daughter of Lyman Clark (b in Pawtucket). Her death record states that she was the daughter of Lyman Clark and Amy Gardner (of one of the Kingstowns). We have yet to locate a birth record for either Lyman Clark or Amy Gardner, but an entry from the 1850 census for an Amey Clark (age about 44) household in Smithfield, RI with two daughters (Susan, 12 and Lydia, 15) suggests she may have been widowed by 1850. Her approximate date of birth would be the same as the Amy Clark who died in Attleboro in 1880, and the fact that her two daughters were living there at the time is at least circumstantial evidence that this is our Am(e)y Gard(i)ner. (There was another Amey Easton Gardiner born to Samuel Eldred Gardiner and Mary Carpenter in March of 1807 but the Attleboro link for the Amy Gardner, d of William Gardiner and Betsy Potter strikes me as a more likely fit). There do seem to be multiple William Gard(i)ners and Betsy (which is often short for Elizabeth) Potters in the Washington County area at the time of Amy's birth, but I have yet to be able to connect any two of them by a marriage record. They seem both likely to have been born between 1765 and 1788, and married perhaps sometime between the early 1780s and 1806. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Greetings. I am trying to determine the parentage of one Lyman Clark(e) of Rhode Island who married Am(e)y Gard(i)ner. According to a death record and obituary for his daughter Susan (we have yet to find a birth, marriage, or death record for him), Lyman Clark(e) was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island likely sometime between 1790 and 1817. He married Am(e)y Gard(i)ner (of either North or South Kingstown, RI) and may have lived in South Kingstown in the mid 1830s before moving to the Smithfield/Central Falls area by 1838/39. Lyman and Am(e)y Clark(e)s (apparent) first daughter was Lydia Clark(e)(e), born 1835-37 (in S Kingstown, according to birth records for her children). She married Albert Briggs and resided in Attleboro Mass. Lyman and Am(e)y's second daughter Susan was born in 1838-39 (in Smithfield/North Providence according to records for her marriage, childrens' birth, and her death). Susan married Ephraim Hunt Tappan (Toppan) - son of Abraham Tappan and Sarah Stockman of Newburyport, MA - and resided in Attleboro as well (Ephraim Tappan and Lydia's husband Albert Briggs were in business together). I don't yet know what year Lyman and Am(e)y Clark(e) married, but it could have been between 1830 and 1835/6 in the Pawtucket or South Kingstown area. As I said, the family apparently moved to Smithfield by the time Susan was born (1838/39). There is no 1840 census record for a Lyman Clark(e) household in Smithfield, but an 1840 census record for a Lyman *Cook* family with two young children in Smithfield may be our Clark(e)s. There is no 1850 census record for a Lyman Clark(e) household in Smithfield either, but there *is* a record for an Amey Clark household in 1850 Smithfield (with two daughters - Susan [12] and Lydia [15]), suggesting Lyman may have died between 1840 and 1850. Apart from a possible death record for Am(e)y Clark(e) in Attleboro (January of 1880), this is about all the information I have now. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Judi" Do you have the address for the Newport Historical Society? Want to check on a Sylvester-Taber marriage in 1807. Claire
Hi Regina, I'm sorry for your loss ! I can sympathize. I have a similar story regarding a CLARK extended family in RI, but it was probably 100 years before your story ! * I believe that some of my ancestors are helping me with my research "from high above." And I am hoping that my grandmother, who died in the 1960's, has had 40 years of relationships with her "birth-parents" she never knew during her 78 years on earth. And, I hope her "family in Heaven" includes the James CLARK who was the birth-father of her Adoptive-mother, who abandoned her when she was about 8. I believe that Mrs. Mary "Molly" (CLARK) DEXTER had CLARK relatives around her during the 1800's, but have no way of proving it ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) * Quick description of family for other Listers who might not have read it before: Epaphraditus LAVARE, a Mariner, and Rhoda MANCHESTER get married in Westport, MA, and have 3 children. Rhoda, b1800, loses her husband "to sea" when the daughter is born. In 1829 in Westport, MA, Mrs. Rhoda LAVARE marries James CLARK/E, and they have 1 daughter, Mary Anna, b1836. So, between 1829 and ~1845, there should have been: James and Rhoda CLARK, and her 3 LAVARE children, and their daughter, "Molly." But, by the 1850 census, James is not living with them, and there is no mention of him again. (No indication he died. Possibly he "went to sea." Possibly "he" moved to Stonington, CT.) "Molly" CLARK married John DEXTER in ~1856 in Stonington, CT. He was from Killingly, CT, and that is where they lived. They had 3 daughters, but 2 died young. In 1886, they strangely moved to Boston, MA. In 1892, while in their late 50's, they adopted a baby girl -- my grandmother. They died in 1899 and 1905 and their adopted daughter went to an orphanage "again." (My grandmother's story has been told many times on the MA, RI, and CT Lists.) ----- Original Message ----- From: <rgpipes@hughes.net> To: <RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 11:22 AM Subject: BETTY ROCKLEY PIPES >I know that most of you have seen my post on helping my mother-in-law Betty > ROCKLEY Pipes find her CLARK birth family in Rhode Island. Hi Arlene, I also believe that some of my ancestors are helping me with my research "from high above." There is no other explanation for my "suddenly and unexpectedly" finding information I had been searching for ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I was married for 9 years before I kicked my EX out, but my mother-in-law suffered from a mental illness and was not capable of establishing a relationship. So, I never got to have an active/healthy mother-in-law ! On the other hand, I could start some "wicked daughter-in-law jokes." :o( ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arlene Haddock" <mahaddock@yahoo.com> To: <RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 5:20 PM Subject: Re: [RIGENWEB] BETTY ROCKLEY PIPES > Regina, I am so sorry over the passing of your > mother-in-law. Hi Jude, I do not have the 1782 census but do have the 1774 census. There were no Bra(y)mans in Newport then so if someone finds them in 1782 it may help you narrow down the time frame. Hey You All; I checked out the name of Braman from Newport, Rhode Island and found the following; Arnold Slocum married Februaryn9 1863 a Sarah Frances Braman, daughter of Benjamin W. and Eliza (Barber) Braman. They were living in Richmond Tp., R.I. but their children were born in Wickford and So. Kingston where Arnold and Sarah were married.Unfortunately it was not Newport. This probably will not help, but I thought anything might be possible. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Potter" <uriramfan@cox.net> To: <RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 4:01 PM Subject: Re: [RIGENWEB] Church records for Newport in 1700's???? > Hi Jude, > I do not have the 1782 census but do have the 1774 census. Hello friends and cousins, I am still back-tracking on my Exeter bunch of BRAMANs. The trail led "forward" to Smithfield, but now I am tracing BACKWARD to Newport. Am interested in Bramans there, especially names that may be patterned from Newport Bramans ( David, Abby, Elizabeth)--------here is my question: I have hardly been to Newport for research. WHERE IS a good place to look at old CHURCH RECORDS from say, 1700's time period? Am I too hopeful to think I can find any people by using church records that old??? Also, does anyone have a book "1782 R.I. Census"- reconstructed census? If so, were there any BRAMAN OR BRAYMAN in Newport? I previously did not look for Bramans in Newport, as I was only looking at Exeter and SK. Thanks if anyone can help! Jude in CT
Regina, I am so sorry over the passing of your mother-in-law. Sometimes we forget in our searching and trying to figure out the complexity of lines, etc. that what we are looking for is our sense of family. I too have come to the conclusion that I may not in my lifetime get it all figured out. But, in another life we could meet face-to-face and know what took place and why. Either way, I guess we win. You did a nice thing for your mother-in-law. I never did understand the mother-in-law jokes. I loved my in-laws and they were very good to me. God bless you. I know that most of you have seen my post on helping my mother-in-law Betty ROCKLEY Pipes find her CLARK birth family in Rhode Island. Her search came to an end Sunday April 30, 2006 when she passed away. Hopefully she will get to meet Robert CLARKE, Harold CLARK and her birth mother Frances CLARK in heaven along with her adopted family George and Harriett ROCKLEY. My search isn't over because I still have one of her brothers to find by the name of Richard CLARK. My heart may not be as much into it as it was but I will beep searching.
