    3. if anyone cares to read the attached mail it concerns a registry system used by this country for sailors. it contains the name, port of registration, place of birth and age of the mariner. the documents that were issued were in essence citizenship papers. during the age of impressment mostly by the Brits we started giving credentials to the sailors defining their allegiance to this country. the sailors often lost the papers and had to renew their registration which is why they appeared registering numerous times and a different certificate number. not all sailors registered but those that did world wide sailing were apt to get them. i was able to find my ancestor in 1845 and three of his brothers - i got their ages and confirmed their birthplaces and actually found a brother i didnt knew exist and was able to locate them as residents in places i had never dreamed they had lived at. i closed some missing locations gaps. the mystic seaport site has the registry - its online, free and searchable. jack hanover,pa ----- Original Message ----- From: Inquiries To: 'Jack Scott' Sent: Monday, May 08, 2006 10:54 AM Subject: RE: Seamans Protection Registers Dear Mr. Scott, The original documents from which the data were taken are not in our possession, but reside with the National Archives Boston branch, which actually is in Waltham, Mass. 3. Hi Marge, I have 30 Gifford's in my database. Most are from the Tiverton, Portsmouth, Little Compton, Dartmouth area. Apparently we connect at William Gifford b. 1615 d. 1687, but nowhere else. I don't have any others you mentioned. Was Robert (2) a son of Williams? Also who was William's wife? My direct line is; William Gifford, b. 1615 England, d. 1687 Sandwich, MA. He was my 6th G grandfather. His son Christopher Gifford, b. 1658 Sandwich, MA d. Little Compton, RI (only child I have for William), m. 1615 Deborah Perry. Their child, Mary Gifford, b. 1697, Tiverton, RI d. 1740, Tiverton, RI m. Thomas Borden. Their dau. Deborah Borden b. 1720, m. David Brayton. they were my 3rd G grandparents. My mother was a Brayton. Another connection of the Gifford's to the Brayton's was, Robert Gifford ( no details) m. Sarah Wing, b. 1657/58. Their child Jeremiah Gifford, b. 1681 m. Mary Wright. They had 13 children Their son, Joseph Gifford (one of the 13) b. 1712 married Mary Brayton. Mary was a cousin of mine. Do you have and other children for William Gifford, b. 1615? I would appreciate them. I will give you whatever data you want from my database. Researching Brayton, Cook, Remington, Gifford, Lake, Borden, Peckham, Wordell, Wodell, Rider and many other old New England Families. My Bartlett's are from Canada and far less interesting than my New England Heritage. But I can trace them back to 1710. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marge Costa<mailto:Sisfeather@msn.com> To: RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 19, 2006 9:45 PM Subject: [RIGENWEB] Giffords -RONALD BARTLETT Hi Ron, I saw where Judy mentioned that you may have Giffords in you tree. 3. I'm not sure if this was posted to this mail list yet, but if it has, here is a reminder ... from a local paper: GENEALOGISTS TO MEET ON MAY 21 IN WICKFORD The RI Genealogical Society will hold its annual meeting and election of officers at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at the First Baptist Church, 44 Main St., Wickford. Both RIGS members and non-members are welcome to attend. After a short business meeting and the election of officers, Cherry Bamberg, editor of "Rhode Island Roots" will give a talk on "Peleg Gifford's Story: How an Ornament of Society became the Terror of the Town". Bamberg's research on this subject was recently published in "Rhode Island History" and more information will appear in a three-part article about Peleg's grandmother, "Comfort Coggeshall and her Children", in the NE Historic Genealogical Register. A Book Fair will follow the presentation. More than 20 authors of books on Rhode Island history and genealogy will share their expertise and discuss their insights with meeting participants on an individual basis.

    2. Don Taylor
    3. Joe, I wish you would follow your line backwards. There was a Peter Taylor who was a possible brother to ancestor Richard Taylor. One of his descendants became a surveyor in Mass. and wrote a manuscript which is at NEHGS incorrectly connecting his/our line back to the Robert Taylor of Newport line. His/ our line starts with a John Taylor born about 1675 and married Naomi Jordan. They settled at Scituate, R.I. where all of their children were born except the first Daughter Naomi born at Milton and probably died young. Given the Marlborough and Killingly connections, I'd guess you are descended from Peter Taylor.
