    3. I do think they probably went by way of the Hudson River and Erie Canal. The Canal really opened up the west to travel from New England. People from RI most likely sailed from a port like Fall River to NY, then up the Hudson. That's how my own ancestors did it, I know, but they stopped near Albany, before the Erie Canal was built. Later some of the family went on west. It sounds cumbersome to us because we're used to highways, but back then water was the easiest way to go.

    3. You could have taken , The Blackstone Canal From Points North of Providence , Worcestor Mass, From Worcestor Mass , To Providence , From Providence , Steam / Sail Boat down the Bay . Across Long Island Sound to New York , Up The Hudson , To The Erie Canal , To the Great Lake's, or Penn & Ohio Canals , Across the Great Lake's to the Mich, Ill , Canals To The Misssipi River south to the Gulf of Mexico . Your Best Bet is to find the date when they traveled , And search for the dates of when each Canal began operation . Here are few links for more info on migration patterns Bill Keough http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/oswego/nyoswego/greatlakes.html http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Egentutor/migration.html

    3. Well, on second thought, I'd forgotten about the northern part of Illinois. Maybe someone would have gone up north on the Hudson to the Erie Canal into the Great Lakes and gotten to the Chicago area. Sorry, I have ancestors in southern Illiniois and I don't think about northern Illinois much. Patti

    3. <<Hello. What river was it that a ship would be on to go from R.I. to IL.? Could it be the Hudson River?>> I don't think so. I can't imagine that anyone could get to or from Rhode Island and Illinois by the Hudson River. It's possible, but would have been very circuitous. The likely avenue (in my mind) would have been the Ohio River which has its origin in western Pennsylvania. many people migrated to Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois via the Ohio River. But it doesn't go all the way to Rhode Island--actually it' be practically impossible for that to happen with the Applachian Mountain range in between. So likely they took some other route across CT and PA to the Ohio River. Patti

    3. Hello. What river was it that a ship would be on to go from R.I. to IL.? Could it be the Hudson River? Some where in my many thousands of papers i have a story about women, children and furniture on a ship that a rope being handled by one of the men on river bank lost his hold and the ship went crazy. But when got under control again and they talked to family on ship they didnt know it happened. Thank you. Viola.

    3. Hello, I was just watching the Antiques Roadshow on TV and this show is one of the series done in Providence ! One lady brought in some of her collection of doll-house furniture, some of which was made in the "Tiny Toys" company in Providence ! The appraiser said that "Tiny Toys" was founded by two women "entrepreneurs." I don't remember the names he mentioned. He said that their doll-house furniture is very collectible, and part of the reason is that some of the chairs were painted by students at the Rhode Island School of Design. I just tried doing a Google search in order to find a brief history of the company, "Tiny Toys," and am not coming up with anything at all !! I am interested in who the two ladies were who founded the company ! Enjoy your day ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)
