    2. Jay Leach
    3. Does anyone know where the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum was located and how to obtain records? I have an 1886 death record from the City of Providence which lists the place of death as "R.C. Orphan Asylum."

    1. Tennant Family From RI
    2. Marsha
    3. Hi Listers, I am having trouble in finding my Tennant relatives in RI. I have the following information: Asaph Tennant born about 1808 in East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI (from son's birth record) he was married to Irene ?? born about 1812 in Glocester, Providence Co., RI (from son's birth record). I do not know when Asaph died I know it was after 1880 as he was listed in the census and they were living in Smithfield, RI at the time. Irene died in 21 Jan 1893 at Cranston State Institution, Providence Co., Cranston, RI. (have her death record) They had 9 children Charles born 1830, Elizabeth born 1838, Asaph S. born 1840 died 1841 and buried in Sanders lot in Foster, RI, Lawton born 1841 and died 04 Jul 1898 in MI, Lucy born 1844, Henry (my 2nd great grandfather) born Oct 1846 and died 1920, Ann Elizabeth born 1849, Thomas D. Tennant born 26 Jan 1852 in East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI and died 29 Jan 1917 in Providence, Providence Co., RI (have his death record), Franklin W. born 19 Dec 1855 in Scituate Twp, Providence, RI ( have his birth record). I have information from someone from years ago that stated that they thought Asaph came from the Tennant line Havens (4), Oliver (3), John (2) and Alexander (1). I have not been able to verify this. I also had information that Franklin died in Newport, RI in about 1880. He was listed in the census for 1880 as living with his parents in Smithfield, RI. I do not have Irene's maiden name. I was thinking it may be Sanders as their child was buried there in the Sanders Lot. I think from the list of cemeteries that Asaph is buried there also but not sure. I know that Lawton worked on the Asaph Sanders farm for one of the census. But not sure and have not been able to verify this information. Any help will be appreciated as I have been working on this line for a few years. Marsha

    3. Hi Bill and all So what do I do now <g> Where did this guy come from? Why do I always end up trying to untangle the names, like, Baker, Smith, Green, Brown, etc, etc. Why couldn't I have at least one ancester with a stranger name than Potter <VBG> Bonnie

    06/02/2006 11:38:59
    1. RI Histories - Philip Greene of Exeter
    2. Bill Wright
    3. Bonnie istoo kind in yer comments. She actually found the breakthrough information. Bonnie sent me a copy of an article from RIGR, 14:325-326 which corrected and earlier article published in RIGR 3:208-217. The article in Vl 14 referenced the births of two daughters of Philip Greene and Hannah Potter in Exeter. I checked Arnold for Exeter, and there were the births of these two daughters in 1746 and 1748. Therefore it appears that there was a Philip Greene of Exeter who was distinct from Philip Greene of West Greenwich and distinct from Philip Greene of Warwick. Philip of WG descends from John of Q. Philip of Warwick descends from John of W. But Philip of Ex is not shown in the genealogies of either John of Q, John of W, or third John of EG/Cov who m Abigail. So who is he? Philip of Ex did not have any known sons, so y-chromosome DNA testing won't help as it eventually will when male line descendants of the three Johns step forward to be tested. Bill Wright

    3. Hi all! Maybe I am getting old or just crotchety <g> What we have to keep stressing to people, is that they tell us what they "do" know. It helps a lot, when you are wracking your brain, trying to sort things out. I know that I have been guilty in the past, and hope that I don't do it in the future. One of the girls, on another list, just went through a lot of searching, to help a newbie to the list, and then found out that she (the newbie) had all of the books she had been searching in. What a waste of time and effort. Maybe, we need a sign up program that says "Who, What, When" What do you think, Arlan <g>?

    1. Joseph Bennett Jr and Sr @ Cranston
    2. Jack Scott
    3. in the 1820 Fed Census at Cranston - there appears one Joseph Bennett Jr - enumerated next to Daniel Hudson - probably Daniel Hudson Jr ! i think Sr died in 1815 - there is a date on the IGI but no sitation as to where that Daniel Hudson died. he may have been the Daniel who married Eleanor Rice at Cranston. anyway ... there appears also another Joseph Bennett who appears to be older. In 1821 there was a birth of Joseph Bennett at Cranston. no parents as of yet - he was a mariner who removed by 1840 to Fall River. who are these two Joseph Bennetts in the 1820 census at Cranston ??? are they Joseph B who married Penelope Andrews, Joseph Bennett who m. Rosanna Remington or Joseph Bennett who m. a Burlingame ???? or ........ jack

    3. Syril Waterman Knight put togther some notes on the family of Abel Bennett(RIHL) m . Nov 12, 1772 at Warwick to Rosanna Remington. They are attributed to have had son William (amongst others). no birth date but he says that he married Rebecca Potter b. Mar 19 1768. and that this Rebecca was the daughter of Thomas Potter and Rebecca Sheldon. However ... there is a marriage recorded somewhere - perhaps Cranston of William Russell and Rebecca Potter Apr 1785. why did he think it was to William Bennett ? Rebecca and William had: Philip Knight,Cromwell D,Percival,George P.,Sabra and Ruth. somehow i doubt the married to William Bennett to the earlier Rebecca Potter or there is another younger Rebecca Potter who is not the daughter but grand daughter of Thomas Potter and Rebecca Sheldon. any thoughts anyone ??

    3. Hi everyone Bill Wright and I have taken the discussion of Philip Geene, of Exeter off line. We have tumbled onto new information, and the end result is we don't know!!! If any one else is interested in this "Greene" discussion, we can always put it back onto the group. I had to send some documents for Bill to look at and of course, you can't send attachments to the list. We are both long established researches, but sometimes, other's can see what you cannot, especially when you are very close to the subject. Thank heavens for this list, or I would not have found what I did, and wouldn't have found Bill! Bonnie (Baker) Weber
