I visited the two remaining state institution cemeteries in 2000 and 2001. The oldest one, CR060, has 2796 burials from 1875 to 1917. The markers for these graves are now gone as this cemetery was reused from 1918-1933. The markers are small cement markers with numbers at the top. This cemetery has 1050 markers (1918-1933). #1 is in the northeast corner and #1031 is in the southwest corner. This cemetery is between the maximum security prison and the railroad tracks south of Route #37. It can be seen from Route #37 in the winter when the leaves are off the trees. It can be reached by walking down the tracks, but you didn't hear that from me. You really are not allowed to be that close to the prison. The next one, CR061 is at the junction of Pontiac Ave. and Knight St. beside the Pawtuxet River. It was used from 1933-1940 and contains markers #1051-#1689. The third one, CR063, no longer exists. It was on Pontiac Ave. across from the power plant, but it was removed in 1975 to make way for an industrial park. The state has pictures of this removal, including pictures of coffin plates #2211 (from 1948), and #2260 (from 1949). There were 350 burials in this cemetery. The data for each burial is contained in the state records. Florence Patenaude, who used to work there, got permission to copy these records which were published in RI Roots in 1998. The pauper lots were only used for the burial of unclaimed bodies of those that died in the intitutions at Howard (most from the alms house). 3/4 of those that died in the institutions were claimed by relatives and buried elsewhere. I'm referring to CR061. Inscriptions 1875 to 1897. CR060 where Knight St begins has inscriptions 1909-1927. Should be between route 37 and the ACI. Anyone ever been there? It appears there is no road access. It looks like it's just to the right going East on Route 37 and taking the Pontiac Ave exit ramp. I couldn't see it from the road or from any roads in the Howard complex. My guess would be to hike in from Pontiac Ave. I can see some kind of clearing on Google Earth. Wondering if anyone out there been in there.

If this Almshouse Cemetery you are looking for is CR 060 (State Institution Cemetery) it is not in the Pastore Complex: it is at the junction of Knight St. in Warwick (this is the street across from Warwick Mall that goes by the Pontiac Mill) and Pontiac Ave. in Cranston. I used to park and have my lunch next to this cemetery many years ago when I worked in the area. The last time I was by there I could not see any stones but they were visible years ago. If you go down Knight St. from the mill it is at the curve where you go left up the hill onto Pontiac St.. It is next to the river. So it is between the river and the street. I think the river may have claimed some of the land since then so good luck. The stones are small and probably buried by growth and have only numbers on them if anything remains at all.
