There is no JACOB BRIGGS listed in the 1777 Military Census of Rhode Island. Only Job, John, Jonthan, and Joseph listed under the letter J. Hi Nina----I have switched off of my Braman research for a while. I am back to studying JACOB BRIGGS a soldier in the Continental Army. He enlisted sometime in 1777 at SK, RI. I found him in 1790 in Hopkinton, but is he listed in the 1777 census? I wonder. Thanks if you can look it up. (There were 3 other Jacob Briggs in the Revol. Going through the archives I came across a great post and would like to correspond with the author but her email address is no longer active. Does anyone out there know how to reach a Donna Stewart who used to be at the address: dibennett@integrityol.com? Here is her original post which gave me a lot of new info on this line. "I have a copy of an abstract of a will of Sylvanus BUCKLIN. He had brothers named Isaac and Nathaniel, sisters Anna MANN, Martha ARNOLD and Joanna BENNETT (she was my ancestor, married to Robert BENNETT). Sylvanus married Abigail BROWN. I would like any information on these families. Also, my gggrandfather, Rufus BENNETT (son of Robert) was born in Smithfield, RI on 17 Mar 1774. He later moved to MA. Robert and Joanna also had Amy BENNETT, m. John SWEET 8 Aug 1785; Anna BENNETT, m. Lyman ALDRICH 21 Apr 1791 and Abigail BENNETT b. 31 Jul 1799, m. Zadok TAFT 20 Nov 1800" -- Kind regards, Sandy from Colorado

Hi Nancy, You can check this database to see who owns it now and I think it tells the year it was built, has a picture and a building sketch. This website will also give you parcel ID and last person who bought the house and the book and page where the last sale is recorded. You can do a deed search at City Hall and find out who were original owners. http://providence.univers-clt.com/ Sheila
MASSACHUSETTS GENEALOGICAL COUNCIL (MGC) P.O. Box 5393 Cochituate, MA 01778 www.massgencouncil.org ALERT ALERT ALERT MGC urges all genealogists who care about access to vital records to act now! Legislative bills (H-3642, H-3643, and H-3644, petitioned by Plymouth Rep. Thomas J. O’Brien, et al.), currently pending in the Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee, are being pushed for passage within two weeks. They will close public records that have been open for nearly 400 years as well as the indexes to them. We all must contact our Massachusetts state Representatives and Senators to oppose these three (O’Brien) bills for the following reasons: The bills call for restricting access to all birth records since 1915 and all marriage and death records since 1955. These records are currently open public records and are the entry point for genealogical and medical history research. Restricting public access to the indexes of these records is unprecedented. It will deny use by all non-governmental individuals: researchers in genealogy, medical history, probate heirs, banks, journalists, and historians. Contact should be made immediately. We stopped these bills in 2003 – but now support for them in the legislature is formidable. If YOU don’t speak now, these bills will change the face of genealogy in Massachusetts and beyond. MOST EFFECTIVE: a signed letter with your reasons for opposing these closures, using your own words. To view a sample letter for your legislators, click here http://home.comcast.net/~massgencouncil/ConstituentLetter.htm ALSO: telephone calls, face to face meetings, and e-mails. SHARE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT: urge your sympathetic relatives, friends, neighbors, and the professionals listed above to do the same. Contact information for your representatives and senators is available at: http://www.mass.gov/legis/ your town clerk the state house at (617) 722-2000 the postal address is: Representative (or Senator) _______, State House, Room _______, Boston, MA 02133. If you have any questions, please respond to Sharon Sergeant, MGC Director of Programs, and member of the MGC Civil Records Committee or visit our website at www.massgencouncil.org
I want to look up the deed to the house I was raised in to see who the original owners were and the year it was built. The home is located on the East side of Providence. Where would I go to find the deed? City Hall? Thank you. -Nancy

I had a good feeling about it! When I found Anthony L C Jones listed with a Kimberly Jones and two addresses and phone numbers, I check white pages and found A. Jones listed at the Warwick address. Found another listing for K. Jones at same Warwick one. So, seemed like it just had to be him! I would have gone to the library to find a current listing in the city directories if necessary! It was wonderful and exciting to have been part of helping someone find their dad! What a great Father's Day gift for both of them. Sheila

this is not per se a query but a statement of collateral brain damage - as after 25 years research i cant make any progress on this family. namely the ancestry of Betsey Bennett b. 1792 at Cranston. in the 1820 census Joseph Bennett jr was enumerated next to Daniel Hudson. To me this is of significance. In 1783 at Providence one William Bennett married Hannah Hudson. as in both cases there is a conjunction of Bennett and Hudson either in marriage or in close proximity. The William Bennetts at that time were of Cranston and nearby Warwick. those Williams are probably and more than likley those Williams who married Hannah Capwell ( there is proof that they resided at Cranston in 1774 - and that William Bennett who married Renewed Wood ( in 1743). in 1774 Daniel Hudson the elder - who married Eleanor Rice - he appears at Newport in 1774 - although i beleive he is the Daniel Hudson who married at Cranston but moved. in the 1777 Mil census - Daniel Hudson - resident of Newport is now living in Providence - no doubt displaced by the war. it may have been while at Providence - that a daughter - perhaps Hannah as he only had one is the reason why it is at Providence and not more marriages mentioned or at Newport. The Joseph Bennett Jr - as there is an older Joseph Bennett at Cranston in the 1820 census ...he may be the Joseph Bennett who married Penelope Andrews in 1805 at Warwick. She is reputed to be the daughter of James Andrews of Scituate - who married oddly a Rice, Alice Rice. Her parentage i cannot ascertain in any capacity. Born in 1822 at Cranston is Daniel Bennett mariner. I suspect he is son of Joseph Bennett jr and named after Daniel Hudson. In 1815 Betsey Bennett of Cranston marries Jeffrey Mathewson of Scituate ( son of Asa). Could Betsey be the sister of Joseph Bennett Jr - and are Betsey and Joseph et ux the children of William Bennett and Hannah Hudson? In the will of Asa Mathewson he makes an Andrews the exceutor of his estate - all three of his wives were dead and Jeffrey was dead at Newport in 1847. the eldest boy Jeremiah was away. ( note that at this time 1774 - there were only TWO Andrews at Scituate - Jeremiah and James. Asa had a son Jeremiah ? and that Jeremiah Andews married a Mathewson ! William Mathewson b. 1823 at Mendon, Mass as son of Jeff and Betsey he dies in Newport in 1906. He is buired at the Common Burial Ground - actaully on the line of the Island but most definetly in the Common Burial Ground. His stone - is 15 at a diagonal from the stones of sea Captain John and Thomas Hudson of Newport. i found this to be quite a coincidence. William was a mariner. also that William Mathewson might be named after William Bennett. The Hudsons were ALL mariners at Cranston, Prov and Newport.
HAPPY FATHERS DAY! THANK YOU TO ALL THAT HELPED IN THIS SEARCH! SHIELA YOU ARE AN ANGEL. Do to the assistance I found on this mailing list in this search, my husband has found his father after 33 years of lost hope. They have now spoke and he has found out that he has 2 brothers that he never knew about. They are a lot alike. A lot of things that my husband was told through the years were solved and he has been on cloud 9 since yesterday. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Jodi "Bowen" Jones Calling all Ancestors! I am searching for you! My main branches are... Bowen, Butt(s), Briggs, Beck, Armstrong, Ellis.
Thought I'd let everyone know the search is over! So many of us checked out names and telephone numbers and I thought I'd pass on the news. Ancestry.com's public records showed two addresses as did other sites. I really do miss not having access to FindUSA on Godfrey anymore! I was planning to have a friend check USSearch database that she has subscription to and have her see if she could verify Anthony's current address. But, I didn't even need to do that. Jodi's husband called the telephone number in Warwick and it was his dad! What a wonderful Father's Day gift to them all! Sheila
Hello, This morning there was a query on the LEWIS List about a LEWIS family in early Nova Scotia ! I immediately remembered about a man I found out about about 5 years ago when researching my great-grandparents.* His name was Waitstill LEWIS, and he moved from RI to N.S. in the mid-1700's. I did a Google search and found this web site which describes this family-tree: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nanc/lewis/aqwg04.htm And, I remembered that the name came down for several generations. About half-way down this page, you will see a death-notice of a Capt. Waitstill LEWIS, dying in 1912. http://www.municipalities.com/digby/articlecourier1910.htm If you do a Google search for "Waitstill LEWIS" (using quotes), you will find a few other sites which mention him. There used to be annual "family reunions" in Nova Scotia ! Because I corresponded (slow-mail) with a lady 4-5 years ago, they used to send me their annual Newsletter. But, I haven't received one in a couple of years. I got the impression that the ladies who were in charge of the "annual reunion" had gotten older and could no longer plan such an event ! I'm just offering this as an FYI for you ! The first web site shows that there were RI people heading to Nova Scotia in the 1750's, which, I think, is right around the time N.S. became a Province. (KIDDER is my main research of 11 years, and I have posted queries on the NS List about a James KIDDER from Cambridge, MA, who also went up to Halifax in the 1750's ! James married there, I believe, and they had several children. But, the parents died and left their young children as orphans. I have no idea who would have taken the children in ! And, there is only minimal information on the children as adults !) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) * My great-grandparents were two of the "British Home Children." "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary CORKILL were born in Liverpool, England, ~1860, and went to the Liverpool Sheltering Homes in 1873. They were "shipped to Canada" in 1874, and, along with other children on the ship, were each sent to different homes in N.S. "Stanley" and Mary married in Truro, NS, in 1879, and migrated to Boston, MA, in 1881. They raised 13 children in Stoneham, MA. Mary had 4 younger siblings also come over, and 3 of them remained in N.S. One sister went to her husband's home in Nantucket, MA. (There were 3 LEWIS girls on the ship with my great-grandfather, but I have not been able to find out if they were somehow related to him.)
