    1. Re: [RIGENWEB] Top 10 Books for Family Genealogies in Rhode Island
    2. Hi Many of the Books written on Rhode Island are now on CD's. Most Libraries have Computers available today for people to use. The advantage of CD's is most Libraries have limited Storage Space in their Genealogy Dept. and CD's require very little space. They are also less expensive to purchase and more can be purchased for the same amount of available $'s. In making a decision I think I would write to the Rhode Island Genealogical Society in Greenville, RI, and The NEHGS in Boston Mass. for a professional opinion on the Top 10 Books on RI. If you do not have any Rhode Island Books you might want to include other approved books that are suggested rather than limit them to Family Genealogies. Pat

    3. Hi Karen, Nice to hear from you ! Are you back on-line? We haven't been back in your area again. Been very busy. And, I haven't done much research for a year. Someone has suggested I write an "historical novel" about my grandmother, born Daisy WATROUS, 1889, and re-named, Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, in 1892. I'm tempted ! I still believe that Mrs. Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG was her birth-mother (outside of her marriage). Did I tell you that I was lucky enough to find out where her descendants were living? Some in CT ! I wrote to them - a year ago - and they chose not to respond ! I guess that "family secret" has lasted over 100 years, and will probably continue for another 100 years ! FYI to others: The "whole story" is in the archives of the RI, CT, and MA Lists. Thanks Scott, if I had known some people were interested in Maine, I just gave the Library the Narragansett Settlements or Proprietors and it's from Maine, dummy me, I thought it was from Narragansett when I ordered the book. Grace -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bill Wright Sent: Monday, July 09, 2007 7:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [RIGENWEB] Top 10 Books for Family Genealogy Thanks you Scott Bill Hirst for the kind comments about my book. Here is a list of libraries that have a copy of it. <http://www.hal-pc.org/~wmewrght/library.html> I am not sure that for a lbirary with a limited budget that family histories are the best place to start a collection of RI books. Arnold's Vital Records of RI can be accessed on-line through the New England Historic Genealogical Society and I think they are also available on CD-ROM. The Beaman books are invaluable. There are 12 volumes of the red books "Rhode Island Vital Records, New Series" and 20 volumes of the blue books "Rhode Island Genealogical Register." The two, two volume sets of "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families" published in the 1980s by Genealogical Publishing Company, 1983 and 1989, should get top consideration. They make up 4 volumes. On Grace's question about books on the Tefft, Larkin and Tibbetts families in order to connect her Gardner lines. Genealogies of the Tefft and Larkin families are not plentiful. I can't speak for the Tibbetts since that is a family I have not investigated. Looking at the Family History Library catalog turned up a few Tefft and Larkin books. 1. Larkin, Elizabeth Brock (Main Author). "Edward Larkin of Rhode Island: freeman of Newport 1655 and of Westerly 1664; the first six generations." 474 p. 2004. (I have not seen this book). 2. Editor: William H. Larkin, Jr.. "Chronicle of the Larkin family : of the towne of Westerlie and colony of Rhoad [i.e. Rhode] Island in New England." Microreproduction of original periodical published: LaPorte, Indiana: Published for the Larkin Family Association by William H. Larkin, Jr. 1908-1913. (Since this is on microfilm it is available through Family History Centers.) 3. Tifft, Maria Elizabeth Maxon, 1856- (Main Author). "A partial record of the descendants of John Tefft, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and the nearly complete record of the descendants of John Tifft, of Nassau, New York : containing the names of seven hundred and four descendants extending over a period of two hundred and forty-one years in America, together with other miscellaneous records." (Go to the FHL card catalog and follow the link to the digital version that may be on line at <http://patriot.lib.byu.edu/u?/FH3,36639>. But I didn't find the book particularly helpful.) 4. Prosser--Tefft--Kenyon family notes in Springfield (MA) Public Library. (This is microfilm and the catalog listing says difficult to read in places.) 5. Stocking, Charles H. W. (Charles Henry Wright), b. 1835 (Main Author). The Tefft ancestry : comprising many hitherto unpublished records of descendants of John Tefft of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. 1904. 102 [i.e. 112] p. (More microfilm.) With the exception of the first book listed which I have not seen, I would not call any of the books definitive. 3. Hi Nancy I would second Claire's suggestion. Also, if the library wants to get into CD-Roms, I'd recommend The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633. Obviously it's not RI specific, but a lot of our RI immigrants were in Mass early on before they were kicked out :) I have several RI family genealogies from which I do lookups for BWO and the ones I get the most requests for are Crandall and Hazard. If you are looking for other family genealogies I'd also have to suggest one on Roger Williams, one on the Arnolds and maybe the Coggeshall genealogy. I cannot tell you which Arnold or RW books are best since I don't have those families, but someone on the list must have suggestions. Also, I would recommend a genealogy on the Shermans. Almost any family that's been in RI for any length of time seems to have crossed over with the desc of Philip Sherman. I'm also partial to Bill Wright's book but the title escapes me. I do not know if he has anymore available but if he does it covers a lot of ground in Washington County. Aside from family genealogies, I'd strongly recommend Jane Fiske's Court records books (I'm at work and do not have the exact titles but if you want, I can get them for you) - I've found info in those books on some of my peskier ancestors. If your library does not have Arnold's VR I'd recommend they at least get the town VR volumes unless they have access to NEHGS there. Beaman's is another good resource - that is available on the FTM CD #215. If Barry Browning is on the list, I think he had tried to come up with a similar list a few years ago.
