    1. [RIGENWEB] Clemence book
    2. Jane Fiske
    3. This isn't a commercial announcement because no one except the RI Genealogical Society is selling - and they are non-profit. I'm not profiting personally. The point is simply to get the word out to anyone who might be interested. The book, Thomas Clemence of Providence and his Descendants to the Year 2007, is now available from RIGS. I'm the author (Jane Fletcher Fiske), and it was financed by a trust set up by the late Roberta Stokes Smith, then donated to RIGS. It is 456 pages long including index, and MANY illustrations, both old and new. For those descended from Thomas Clemence, this should be the definitive work for years to come. There's a lot concerning intermarriages with Mathewson, Barnes, Olney, and Smith (John the Miller), among other famiies, and it's all as thoroughly referenced in primary sources as I could make it. I had great help from several Clemence descendants across the US. If Arlan doesn't object to my putting price info here I will do so, but if he does, contact me or RIGS for price and shipping information. Also, for anyone seeking the Edward Larkin book, please contact me. Again, I'm making no profit, but I do have copies for sale for the author's son, Bruce Larkin, who is trying to recover his printing costs. Respectfully, Jane

Grace -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bill Wright Sent: Monday, July 09, 2007 7:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [RIGENWEB] Top 10 Books for Family Genealogy Thanks you Scott Bill Hirst for the kind comments about my book. Here is a list of libraries that have a copy of it. <http://www.hal-pc.org/~wmewrght/library.html> I am not sure that for a lbirary with a limited budget that family histories are the best place to start a collection of RI books. Arnold's Vital Records of RI can be accessed on-line through the New England Historic Genealogical Society and I think they are also available on CD-ROM. The Beaman books are invaluable. There are 12 volumes of the red books "Rhode Island Vital Records, New Series" and 20 volumes of the blue books "Rhode Island Genealogical Register." The two, two volume sets of "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families" published in the 1980s by Genealogical Publishing Company, 1983 and 1989, should get top consideration. They make up 4 volumes. On Grace's question about books on the Tefft, Larkin and Tibbetts families in order to connect her Gardner lines. Genealogies of the Tefft and Larkin families are not plentiful. I can't speak for the Tibbetts since that is a family I have not investigated. Looking at the Family History Library catalog turned up a few Tefft and Larkin books. 1. Larkin, Elizabeth Brock (Main Author). "Edward Larkin of Rhode Island: freeman of Newport 1655 and of Westerly 1664; the first six generations." 474 p. 2004. (I have not seen this book). 2. Editor: William H. Larkin, Jr.. "Chronicle of the Larkin family : of the towne of Westerlie and colony of Rhoad [i.e. Rhode] Island in New England." Microreproduction of original periodical published: LaPorte, Indiana: Published for the Larkin Family Association by William H. Larkin, Jr. 1908-1913. (Since this is on microfilm it is available through Family History Centers.) 3. Tifft, Maria Elizabeth Maxon, 1856- (Main Author). "A partial record of the descendants of John Tefft, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and the nearly complete record of the descendants of John Tifft, of Nassau, New York : containing the names of seven hundred and four descendants extending over a period of two hundred and forty-one years in America, together with other miscellaneous records." (Go to the FHL card catalog and follow the link to the digital version that may be on line at <http://patriot.lib.byu.edu/u?/FH3,36639>. But I didn't find the book particularly helpful.) 4. Prosser--Tefft--Kenyon family notes in Springfield (MA) Public Library. (This is microfilm and the catalog listing says difficult to read in places.) 5. Stocking, Charles H. W. (Charles Henry Wright), b. 1835 (Main Author). The Tefft ancestry : comprising many hitherto unpublished records of descendants of John Tefft of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. 1904. 102 [i.e. 112] p. (More microfilm.) With the exception of the first book listed which I have not seen, I would not call any of the books definitive. It's a pay-for-inclusion book set but I found my family in it and have abstracted what I need. Its about 3000 pages, very heavy, and in reasonable condition, I don't mind delivering it to a library that will have it available. ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 19:28:36 -0700 From: "tanderz" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [RIGENWEB] Top 10 Books for Family Genealogy To: "Debbie Fields Murphy" <[email protected]>, <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original I wish.......I"m having a terrible time trying to find my Field/Fields........Albert Hale Field and Amanda E Lawton, Dau of Isaac D and Mary P Lawton, were married in Scituate in 1884......need to find his parents and more leads on the Lawtons...... 3. Hi! Numerous Babcock descendants would have Lawton as John Babcock married or perhaps common law married to Mary Lawton. This couple obviously has a Westerly tie-in and I have multiple lines from them!
