Bessie, You're welcome. I live on the Coventry/West Greenwich town line. My front yard is Coventry and my backyard is West Greenwich. Both are towns in the County of Kent. Thanks, you too. Listers, I am sure that most of you remember Susan Pieroth, At one time she was the State Coordinator for the RIGENWEB and has made it what it is today, she also created and was the Mail list adminisrator for this mail list for several years, she is the County Coordinator for Newport county from which she is retiring If there is anyone on this list that would like to volunteer to replace her Contact Susan W Pieroth [email protected] and/or Susan Irish Nahas [email protected] Following is her announcement plus some of the qualifications and projects To Susan Irish, current State Coordinator for the RIGENWEB After ten years I have decided it's time to retire as the Coordinator of the Newport County RIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/ Other projects are piling up, and I find I'm unable to get it all done. In particular, Barbara Austin and Letty Champion have taken hundreds of photos of gravestones in the county - see linked cemeteries on http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/cemeteries/ It's valuable information, but it turned out to be more than I can handle. Some pictures are easily added to websites, but the way this was sent, along with the volume (almost 1400 on my computer, but probably more by now that I have not been sent) is more time consuming. Rather than have the images not go up with the appropriate information (most information is from John Sterling's database) or be moved to another location, I would prefer that someone else take over the county. Naturally, whoever does take it over will need to be very familiar with creating web pages. I can send the person a CD with all the pages and my files (the cemetery images have all been renamed so they can be loaded on RootsWeb) as well as the original CD's from Barb Austin and John Sterling (he reworked the images) as backup. The queries for Newport County are few and far between. The Ancestry message board doesn't get much activity either. I would recommend discontinuing the queries and just have a link to the message board and information on joining the mailing lists. HELLO, CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT COUNTY CONVENTRY IS IN? THANK YOU BESSIE TENNESSEE
In a message dated 7/14/2007 1:06:06 PM Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: This is a follow-up to my last message with a direct quote from FTM CD 215, which I hope goes through. I just want to clarify the whole business of Rhode Island Vital Records if I can, for anybody who doesn't know what's what, and that has included all of us at some stage in our genealogical development. Over a century ago, James N. Arnold published a series of books called VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND, 21 volumes. The first six consist of births, marriages, and deaths copied from the records of the various towns, up to 1850. Later volumes contain church records, some military, and newspaper abstracts of deaths and marriages. When you see a reference in a book to RI VR or VRRI, it is almost always Arnold that's meant. About 25 years ago Alden Beaman, who lived in Princeton, Mass., began publishing two separate things: one a series of books called NEW VITAL RECORDS OF RHODE ISLAND. The other was a quarterly journal RHODE ISLAND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER, containing various things, perhaps most importantly abstracts of wills from all the towns. Dr. Beaman is dead, and his daughter Nellie continued his work for a few years but to the best of my knowledge now the family effort, Rhode Island Families Association or something like that, is no longer in operation. They were LDS, so the Library in Salt Lake City might have more information. The NEW VR didn't get to Providence Co., but there are volumes on Kent Co., Washington Co., and some from Newport. It's important to understand the differences between Arnold's VR and Beaman's VR. Arnold's are taken directly from the town records, but anything in the town records is not there, obviously. Beaman did something else. Recognizing that many births and marriages were never recorded. he used probate records and cemetery records to find evidence of births and marriages. Thus if "daughter Sally" is named in the will of John Brown of Scituate, he assumed the birth of a daughter Sally to John Brown. Same thing with marriages. If daughter Sally was daughter Sally Salisbury in John Brown's will, you have the marriage of Sally Brown to a Mr. Salisbury. This is great for clues, but you have to check. Just because someone died in a certain town leaving a will there, it doesn't mean his children were born there -- and the fact that he's buried there doesn't mean he was born there. There's a lot of room for error, but as I said, it's absolutely great for clues. Any serious RI collection should have both Arnold and Beaman. The fact that both involve numerous volumes now largely out of print has made this impractical, but the CDs solve the problem - provided people understand what they are, and the labeling doesn't make it easy. I hope this helps somebody! Thank you, Jane, for your wonderful explanation! I wish I had been fortunate enough to have read a post like yours years ago when I was first starting out in my genealogical research in Rhode Island. It would have saved me SO much time and effort. As it turned out, I eventually figured out what a great resource Beaman's was. But it took me a while. I just wanted to thank you publicly, because it is such a great benefit to our already-wonderful list to have such an experienced (and respected) genealogist in our midst so willing to share her expertise with the rest of us. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Nancy, and anybody else, Here's what it says on Family Tree Maker Disk 215 about content: Vital Records: Rhode Island, 1500s-1900s This Family Archive includes images of the pages of 20 volumes of the "Rhode Island Genealogical Register" and 13 volumes of "Rhode Island Vital Records, New Series." Edited by Alden Beaman and later by his daughter Nellie, the vital records contained within these volumes were extracted from a great variety of sources including probates, local cemeteries, town, church and land records, and family histories.
Hi Jane, Have both on CD and use them all the time. Another must have Rhode Island book would be Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island. I was fortunate enough to purchase one in the 1980's when they were available from the Genealogical Publishing company. When you live 1500 miles from Rhode Island this definitely helps in research. If you identify an ancestor you should still order a copy of the record from the town records. The folks at Tiverton sent me copies at a very reasonable cost. Here is a great source for CDs, from all over this country and England. They have several for RI, including Austin which anyone who has used it knows is an impossible size in a book and difficult to work with. http://www.archivecdbooksusa.com/ I first ran across it on e-bay; they put several disks up for auction every week, but the regular prices are pretty low. I haven't bought any myself yet, but am planning to. Several years back I did buy from the English branch and was very pleased with the disks I got. Bob Velke, who developed the excellent genealogy program, The Master Genealogist, is in charge of the US branch. Jane

The RI Advisory Commission on Historical Cemeteries is back in operation. We are presently distributing booklets to all towns in South County and as this is my area I'd appreciate knowing which families, cemeteries you've covered. Both Evelyn Wheeler and I, Carolyn Crist-Schwab, have visited many, too, and I have several families invovled in several of the towns. The next issue of RI Roots will have a back cover page ad for the Clemence book AND the new CD. The old CD only covered up to 2000, and the new one goes through 2004, has an easier search engine, and some corrections to the earlier version. Price is $39, or 35 to RIGS members, plus $1.95 shipping, and 7% sales tax for RI residents. To order, please send a check to Rhode Island Genealogical Society Books, P.O. Box 433, Greenville RI 02828 or visit the RIGS website http://www.RIGenSoc.org. Just don't anybody confuse this with Beaman's Rhode Island Genealogical Register! That journal is no longer published, and hard copies are out of print. There is a commercially prepared CD - but we've been there before, recently, so I won't repeat it. Jane
