Hi Bonnie, Oh sure, leave it up to me. :-) Actually, after a little looking and found the book on line. No NEWMAN HERRING (any spelling). So, I continue the search. Thanks for your thoughts. I have Harringtons and they are definitely a Rhode Island family. I have Benjamin Harrington b c 1650 married Lydia Wells, their daughter Lydia Harrington b 1680 married Joseph Williams son of Joseph Williams and Lydia Olney. Joseph Williams Sr. was the son of Roger Williams and Mary Barnard. Claire
Hi Linda I think I might have found an answer. There is a Book, on Google's Book List that is "Genealogical & Biographical Notes on the Haring-Herring, Clark, Denton, White, Griggs, Judds, and related Families. Don't remember what state you are in, but it is probably available on inter-library loan. It is also available from NEHGS but it would cost you. >From what I have found, I believe the family might have been Long Island refugee's to Connecticut in the Revolution. That would make sense with your dates, and the proximity to R.I. Haring (Herring) records abound for those areas. Some of them also came from Harington, NY (possibly the name change). You should at least check it out. I can't get it in Canada, so your on your own. Dear List I must post my request again just in case by some remote possibility some one can HELP James CHEEK born about January 10, 1818 in Halse, Somerset, England, and his wife, Maria(h) DUNSCOMBE born about March 1, 1819 in Dulverton, Somerset, England.... This couple with 6 children arrived in 1855 at New York, USA and made their way to Rhode Island where they resided for about 4 years and increased their family by 2 more daughters.....The family then moved to Ripley, Brown County, Ohio, where their last daughter Catherine was born in April 1860, just prior to the 1860 Census being taken. James was a wagon maker/carpenter by profession, as were most South West Somerset CHEEK's..... >From 1861 to 1864 the 6 eldest children, Emma, Sarah Jane, George Henry, Harriet, Amelia, Samitta?? (Laura) and Ellen left Ripley, Ohio and made there way back to Providence, Rhode Island where they married, etc...... Louisa & Catherine along with their parents have just disappeared????? Emma & Sarah Jane married and looked after the younger children along with their own offspring........so I presume, that their parents were not around RI, anyway???? George Henry received a letter from his father instructing him not to enter the Army in the Civil War, however, he took no notice of his father and went anyway???? He was under age...... WHERE DID THEY GO ????? I'm still looking, looking, searching, searching........CAN YOU HELP Any indications would be much appreciated, happy researching David Cheek - Adelaide - Australia Protected with Norton Anti-Virus 2007 Transcriber of Parish Registers for South West, Somerset & FreeBMD No virus found in this outgoing message.
