This article was published in the 28 July 2007 Sarasota Herald Tribune, written by Latisha R. Gray. I thought it might be of interest to someone because the Tourtelotts were originally from RI: Ann Tourtellott turned 103 on Friday and no, she is not the oldest person in a county where a public birthday celebration to honor those 100 or older last year drew 19 centenarians. Tourtellott's secret to long life? "Mind your own damn business." Tourtellott has lived for the past nine years at the Sarasota Healthcare Center, where she blew out the candles on Friday as nurses joked about the time she smacked a man in the head with a tissue box for parking his wheelchair in her favorite spot. "She'll speak her mind," said Marjo Griffin, restorative assistant at the facility. "She got a new roommate and told her no TV after 8 p.m. and lights out after that. She lays down the law." Tourtellott, or "Ms. T," was raised by her Irish immigrant parents in Rhode Island. She married her next-door neighbor, Albert, and the two were together for 58 years. The couple moved to Sarasota in late 1974. Ann Tourtellott worked as a sales clerk at various department stores, but spent most of her life as a homemaker. Albert Tourtellott died in 1992, and the couple had one daughter, who died in 1997. Tourtellott has a granddaughter in Miami and one great-granddaughter. "I just feel great," Tourtellott said. "I remember when milk was 6 cents a quart and bread was 5 cents a loaf." Max Boneta, social service director at the skilled nursing facility, said Tourtellott rolls her wheelchair outside every day to her favorite spot and is very particular about her hair, nails and lipstick, asking the nurses, "Do I look OK, honey?" Last year a woman who was believed to be the oldest person in the county died at 110 at Bay Village Retirement Center. That facility has six residents who are 100 or older; the oldest is 105. [Albert F. Tourtelott was b 15 Jan 1903, the son of William and Grace Tourtelott. He died in Sarasota 23 Jul 1992] Marcia B.
Hello Colleen. I neglect to add to my query that this Nicholas BROWN/ BROWNE, after arriving in Aquidneck, lived there all his life, and died there in 1694. He also is seen in Savage's and in Austin's "Dictionary". THe four children of Nicholas are William, Nicholas2, Abraham, and Jane. These children are all 'accounted for' as well as their descendants - some of them past the 4th generation. I am hoping to learn whether Nicholas spent time in MA (and where) long enough to marry and have children. Thank you, Patricia
It just happens that my current research is on the same family, although a different branch through Stephen b. 1743 in Richomd, RI, son of Edward b. 1709 in Exeter, RI. At least that is what I thought, but now you raise the question I will look closer. On the internet I have found that Edward's parents were Thomas b. 18 Feb 1663/64 in Westerly, RI and Martha Hazard b. 1668 Newport, RI. source Family Data Collection, Provo, Utah. I have not seen any reference to Edward's brothers that you mention, so I will be interested in that data. The same source indicates parents of Thomas were Stephen Wilcox and Hannah Hazard (no dates given). I do not have membership in New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) but I can research their database at a library. In their index they have 18 hits for Hazard Wilcox, but it could be any Hazard, not just the one you are researching.: RI cemeteries 2 Probate Records (NY) 3 Vital Records (RI) 12 Maybe this is the information you have on Hazard Jr., but I will try to get to the library next Weds (they are closed on weekend) to see what I can find. Hello Patricia, I find reference to Nicholas BROWN in Book by James Savage "Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England". Located in Vol. 1 (A-C), page 273. This might be worth future research. Mention is made of the eldest son John, wife Eliz. and other children Josiah; Edward; Eliz.; and Joseph and possible Sarah. A Will is mentioned of 29 March 1673 and probated 17 June. Hoping this is the family you are looking for. Is there information (documents, VRs, lists, etc.) that gives the probable voyage Nicholas took from England - - to Rhode Island? If he did not come directly, there could be a marriage record, and perhaps the birth of a child or children. I have seen suggestions (but they had no documentation) from two other, earlier researchers that believe Nicholas came from England to "somewhere"? in Massachusetts Bay Colony, and probably in 1636 or 1637 arrived in Aquidneck. I believe both researchers had spent some hours in the RIHS Library, - and I haven't. Has anyone of you seen such information? Is it documented and credible? I know the RIHS Librarian has very limited time. It would take a person familiar with the material in the Library to know whether such a reference was there. Because of the amazing amount of spelling variations, the only way we will ever straighten out these families are for more men to participate in the Harrington DNA Project through familytreeDNA. My HARRINGTON line is from RI, but matches none of the proven lines of either ROBERT HARRINGTON or BENJAMIN HARRINGTON. Once we get enough samples we will be able to divide the families into HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON/HERRING/HEARNDON etc. Until then we will all be running around chasing various surname spellings.
