Hello Karl, As promised I went to the research library today, but disappointingly was unable to access NEHGS documents this time. Apparently it depends on who the volunteer help happens to be at the time of your visit. I was able to review a number of books about the early Wilcoxes. One names "From the Bend in the Little River - A Wilcox Book" compiled by Irene Wilcox Lord [929.2 Wilcox 1954] covers mainly the CT Wilcox generations descended from John Wilcocks. I mention this book because of the English family history ( which I will send you copies of offline) also because they reference the 3 known, unrelated Wilcox men who immigrated to America. Namely John Wilcocks to Hartford, CT, Edward Wilcox to Aquidneck (now in RI) then to Stonington CT; and somebody Wilcoxson which information I did not copy. Anyway, none of the books mentioned a brother to Edward by the name of Stephen, although Edward 's son Stephen is prominently mentioned. The other bibliography I copied from was: "Genealogy of Rasselas Wilcox Brown" [929.2 Brown 1921] which has a little more info on the branch of the family that went to NY, and also has a few pages on the Hazard family headed by Thomas b. 1610 in England, by 1639 he was one of 8 founders of Newport, RI. In 1640 he was appointed a member of the General Court of Elections. "Wilcox-Brown-Medbury Genealogy" compiled by William Alonzo Wilcox, published 1902. This book is referred to by later authors. "History of Stonington Connecticut 1649-1900" Wheeler/ Genealogical Publishing Co [974.91 Stoning 1977] which is another authority on early settlers. "Dictionary of Wilcox/Wilcoxon Families of New England and Their Descendants" by Martha Scott Osborne, Heritage Books Vol 1+2 [929.2 Wilcox 1997]. This one gives an alphabetical listing of all Wilcoxes that the author found over 30 years of research, brief info on each with sources. I copied all the entries for Hazard Wilcox which I will forward to you offline, and all the entries for Lyman and Lydia, which I have been hunting. I have included their call #s so you can ask for them at your library, or at least they can tell you the closest place to you where they are located. Rachel Boyd CT KARL WEILER <[email protected]> wrote: I am still trying to find the real father of Hazard Wilcox born abt 1740 in RI. He had a son named Hazard who I have lots of info on. Hazard sr died in the revolutionary war as a tory. Most of the records on the internet show his father as Edward with no proff sources. My research points to Stephen. Stephen and Edward are brothers. They have another brother named George who has a son named Matthew Hazzard. I have data that shows Hazzard sr and Matthew Hazard is not the same. I would really appreciate your help. Rachel Boyd Did you get the attachment I sent to your e-mail address on Wilcox? Karl Weiler Rachel Boyd <[email protected]> wrote: It just happens that my current research is on the same family, although a different branch through Stephen b. 1743 in Richomd, RI, son of Edward b. 1709 in Exeter, RI. At least that is what I thought, but now you raise the question I will look closer. On the internet I have found that Edward's parents were Thomas b. 18 Feb 1663/64 in Westerly, RI and Martha Hazard b. 1668 Newport, RI. source Family Data Collection, Provo, Utah. I have not seen any reference to Edward's brothers that you mention, so I will be interested in that data. The same source indicates parents of Thomas were Stephen Wilcox and Hannah Hazard (no dates given). I do not have membership in New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) but I can research their database at a library. In their index they have 18 hits for Hazard Wilcox, but it could be any Hazard, not just the one you are researching.: RI cemeteries 2 Probate Records (NY) 3 Vital Records (RI) 12 Maybe this is the information you have on Hazard Jr., but I will try to get to the library next Weds (they are closed on weekend) to see what I can find. Cousins, I have just mailed 800 post cards to those on the Lillibridge mailing list for whom I don't have an e-mail address. The post card message follows: Last Chance Aug 1, 2007 I am nearing the finish of Supplement 2 to the Lillibridges of the World. The book will be about 650 pages with probably 60 photographs. I will need your updated family information by November 1st to ensure it gets into the supplement. If you are not sure what I have on your branch of the family, please get in touch with me so I can provide that. I will send out an announcement early next year giving a date when Supplement 2 will be available. We hope to have it available by "Print on Demand". John Lillibridge 717-241-2428 This is sort of like "preaching to the choir" but it's about the only way I have to let everybody know about a cutoff date. I can still use more photographs - they just need someone born before around 1880 in the photograph. Will appreciate your help. John

I came across this info somewhere: "Captain Charles (Carr). married Hannah Hopkins (Dec. 18, 1735) of East Greenwich, RI. He was a deacon of the Baptist church for thirty years, a member of the assembly, also a sheriff of Kent County at the time thirteen pirates were hung at the yard arms of the ships lying in the bay at East Greenwich." My question - I have done a lot of research and have found absolutely nothing about "thirteen pirates hanged at the yard arms" in my home town of East Greenwich. Was this a fantasy? Has anybody done research on the Carr or Hopkins line and have more info? Thankyou for that information. I do not see a HALL on the 1638. Where did he come from? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 29, 2007 6:02 PM Subject: Re: [RIGENWEB] Nicholas BROWN(E) of PORTSMOUTH: his "itinerary"enroute to RI > Two Portsmouth Compacts > http://rewhc.org/lawtonvalleycompact.shtml > > Portsmouth Compact > http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/compact1.jpg > http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/compact.html > > Plaque, Founders' Brook Park, Portsmouth > http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/compact.jpg > > > > ************************************** > Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at > http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Thank you , Jane. I certainly will look into this. I am going to the ACPL in Ft. Wayne in early November, if I cannot sooner get to a library closer than that having a copy of VRs in Suffolk County MA, as well as the other Boston records. I haven't read the entire "NE Colonial Records". I have sent a query to Suffolk MA Message Board, as well as to Essex MA and MA Bay Colony Boards, but no replies yet. (And to think that my husband and I lived in Malden, MA, regularly walked the Cemetery there, and visited the Lynn, Revere, Nahant, Marblehead, Northport, Ipswich towns during the two years we were there!) In GREAT MIGRATION, Vol. 1, p. 147, in a sketch of William Ballard, Bob Anderson quotes a deposition recorded in Suffolk Probate Vol. 1. "Nicholas Browne and Gearard Spencer [worn] affirmeth that being with Mr. William Ballard of Linn [worn] before his death ..." Bob says that the date is no longer legible, but is given elsewhere as 1639, which he thinks is reasonable given his estimate of the year of Ballard's death (between 13 March 1638/9 and 6 June 1639). I don't know if this is the Portsmouth man or not. The association with Gerard Spencer suggests that it might be, especially if he doesn't show up in Boston records in any other context. I believe that most of the men who signed the Portsmouth Compact had been in Boston and went to RI with the Hutchinsons. I haven't searched other Boston records for Nicholas Browne but there are other possibilities. From the messages posted, I assume others have done that. The Boston Church records include some comments on other people who were among those "disarmed" who went to RI. The New England Colonial Records (Records of the Gov. and Council of the Mass. Bay) might mention him. Jane

I've just finished a new section of pages for my website, titled "Witchtrials" I think you'll find it presented in a very creative and unique fashion. You can have a look at it by going to http://genealogy2.com then scroll down to "witchtrials" Sarah
Hi Patricia, I am also a descendant of this Nicholas Brown (there was another one in Mass and the two have been confused a lot). I have never found a ship's passenger list with his name, nor have I found a solidly documented record for his birth. We do know he was in Portsmouth at the time the Compact was signed (cannot remember if it was 1638 or 1638) since he signed it. The early info on this family is lacking compared to what we have for his contemporaries here in RI. I have never spent a lot of time on Nicholas, although this line runs down to one of my second great grandmothers, Mary Sherman Brown, who married Jeremiah Carpenter Potter. I have still got some brick walls a little closer to me that I\'ve been trying to crack:) Donna Potter in RI ---- Patricia Brown <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello Listers.
