Does anyone know if there are burial sites in Fort Dumping? Fort Dumping, so I understand is on Jamestown Island. I'm hoping there is an expert out there who can help me out. Dear Elaine, I very much admire you and I respect your perspective and insight. May I simply add that all war is an atrocity. I believe members of the D.A.R.; etc., (for which I qualify but have not joined) are honoring their ancestors, not the war they fought in. I would qualify for any such a society as Banjofan asked about (but I probably wouldn't have joined it either.) On the other hand, I am a member of the Mayflower Descendants. Your comments have caused me to look deeper into my choices. I'm still pondering. The Indians still grieve and honor their ancestors that were massacred there. There are ceremonies honoring the dead. Indians also know which war in United States history shed the most blood. If there were societies honoring the atrocities it would not be good. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2007 2:48 PM Subject: [RIGENWEB] King Philips War >I just finished reading the book "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick. I have a relative that was scalped in the war, his wife was a grand daughter of Thomas Rogers, Pilgrim. When N. Philbrick was at the Little Compton Historical Society he commented on the second generation of colonials and how their initial spirit of cooperation and camaraderie ended with the desire of the English to take possession of the Land. You'd probably be interested in THE WITNESS, a film at the Pequot Museum. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2007 2:48 PM Subject: [RIGENWEB] King Philips War >I just finished reading the book "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick. I just finished reading the book "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick. It was very informative and besides the wonderful story of the Pilgrims it goes into a lot of detail about King Philips War. I didn't realize that in terms of population that was America's bloodiest war. WW II had 1% of its soldiers killed, Civil War 4-5%, and during the fourteen months of King Philip's war 8% of its men were lost. Of the total 20,000 Native population 6000 were killed in battle, died of sickness, or sent into slavery. Southern New England had 60 to 80% loss. This tragedy, some say, setback the development of New England by 100 years. I wonder why there is no society of Daughters of King Philips War? (Either Colonist or Native daughters.) I have an ancestor who fought in the war. It was as much a part of our history as the Revolution. I have a Civil War pension file on Henry CRANDALL, my g.grandmother's first husband. If anyone would like a copy of it I will be happy to send it. He died of his injuries in a hospital down south. Hi! Sharing with Tracy Crocker, note "Cc:", of the Thomas Rogers Society.I have no proven Thomas Rogers line but have a Rogers line from a Judith Rogers, second wife of Thomas Potter.I also have a line from Potter's first wife Mary Babcock.Despite what you might seen on the Internet this Judith Rogers is NOT a Thomas Rogers descendant.Walter Woodworth my ancestor may have married a daughter of Thomas Rogers but this is not proved. Someone may have posted this, but if so I didn't see it. Prudence Crandall was the subject of a book, titled "The Whole Souled Woman," or something similar. I had a copy but am not sure if I still do -- if I can find it, I'd be glad to pass it along to someone else.
