    3. Brenda I seem to answering my own posting. There are a number of family trees on line that suggest that the Thomas we have been referring to indeed married Elizabeth Arnold. There were two Elizabeths on board, one William Arnold's sister and the other his daughter aged 23. So this would have been Thomas' cousin. I cannot vouch at all for the veracity of the family trees posted on line. There are some conflicting dates on Thomas' death. My problem is that in his will he refers to his wife as Sarah. I will take another look at that issue. Peter

    3. Brenda It is very likely that the Thomas that Arlan references is the one that you are looking for. If it is, he came on the ship with William Arnold and his family (including Benedict, first governor). We do not know the name of the ship. They arrived in Hingham MA and later joined up with Roger Williams coming to Providence. Thomas Hopkins was William Arnold's nephew, the son of William Hopkins and Joanna Arnold of Yeoville, Somersetshire. He was 19 at the time of his sailing which would fit with the birth date Arlan cites as well as the arrival in Providence. Brenda. The most useful source for this is "An account of the English Homes of Three Early 'Proprietors' of Providence" William Arnold, Stukely Westcott and William Carpenter by Fred A. Arnold, member of the RI Historical Society, 1921. Thomas came of the ship with his sister Frances, 21, married to William Man. Thomas was baptised 7th April, 1616. I hope this turns out to be your Thomas. Peter Blackwell

    3. A few items I'd take a second look at: - I'd want to review the records the clerks you say have reviewed for Job Cooper; many/most of these records are available on film or fiche thru your local family history center (see www.familysearch.org) newenglandancestors.org might have these online by now too. - Do you have the entire Pension file or just the short (cheaper in price to obtain) from the National Archives? The full file can have several hundred pages and often gives alot of good clues. - What Methodist church records have survived in the area's where he lived in his early years; ask the local folks; some get filmed/others don't; this might not be available on the internet at all--I hear the Methodist church has a large collection; also were there local riding ministers in the area? Learn the local area; talk to the genealogical societies in the area you need help with; they are the experts of their area's history and records. - If the ancestor did belong to an orgaization like mason's for example I'd do all I could to review their records on them. - Often the obit appeared in more than one town's paper or in paper of same town that compete's for newspaper business. - Chase the clergy (if you're so lucky) that married your ancestor; find his name in the civil record of marriage - County/city histories that might have a bio on your ancestor - Local genealogical/historical societies often know of little known unfilmed records like school records, local societies, clubs, special function's of the city/county celebrating age of town, etc that might mention your ancestor. - Search out siblings of the ancestor you seek--lateral lines sometimes solve our genealogy brickwalls. - Search out ALL childern as one may have information of their parents; family bible search too. - Court records--whole topic in itself - Lateral lines; always good to see what got passed on to other families about your own...another story. If any of these are really forgein to you ask someone (including me) for help--an unknown record group to you today may have the information you seek.
