    1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] in Texas

We know he had son, Henry Hampton Riddle, born 1893 in Gorman, Eastland Co., TX, just north-west of Comanche County, TX. L.D.R. shows up in the 1870 census in Owen Co. KY but not the 1880 census. So he may have moved to TX in the 1870s. L.D.R. was a teacher and apparently the Comanches had been forced to give up their nomadic ways by the 1870s. Incidentally, I don't find any present-day Riddles in Comanche Co. but plenty in Cherokee County, TX! >> Hi all, I just have to jump in here, I am so excited to see familiar county names being bandied about ! I have only recently discovered an elderly living relative, my GreatAunt "Dot". She told me a name I could not read on the census records and made a whole new branch on my family tree sprout forth. She told me her mother was Emma Mae ROGERS and Emma's mother was Clarissa Elizabeth RIDDLE, b. KY, said to be half Indian and half Irish, who married Walter Henry ROGERS, of NJ. The couple travelled by wagon train west and Emma was born at Fort Bridger in July 1868 - the first white child born there after it became a territory. She also said that when she was about nine years old (ca 1926) the family was living in Fort Worth Tarrant Co. TX, when a letter came from the State of Wyoming offering a land grant in commemoration of Emma's birth, but they were too poor to move there. (I have written to the State Historical Society asking about this story but so far have not heard back from them). In the 1920 census of Gainesville in Cooke Co. TX, Emma, age 51, is married to William Scott BLAKE. The couple, with their three children, Winnie age 21, Wesley age 9, and my grandmother Annabelle BLAKE age 17, and a grandaughter - my GreatAunt "Dot" age 3, all lived with his mother-in-law (Clarissa Elizabeth) ROGERS, age 74, a widow (whose maiden name is RIDDLE, ala Aunt Dot). I still cannot read that first name, which looks kind of like Tia-Ziu (??) (Annabelle (3rd wife) married Benjamin Lee Herrington ca 1920. His family with second wife is found in 1900 census of Comanche Co. TX. The HERRINGTON and RICHBOURG or RICHBURG families are found all over Eastland, Hamilton, Erath and surrounding counties in TX, moving there ca 1870's) The 1920 census records "Clarissa" and both her parents were born in KY, and Emma was born in WY and her father was born in NJ. Does any of this tie in with someone's research ? thanks Kerry Herrington
