Historical and Genealogical Society Newsletter, Vol. 4, Issue 7, Nov. 1984: Robert Riddle Summons: Thorpe's Courthouse Notes COMMONWEALTH (SUMMONS) ROBERT RIDDLE The commonwealth of Kentucky to the Sheriff of Estill County, Greetings, We command you to summons Robert Riddle to appear before the Judge of the Estill Circuit Court at the court house in Irvine on the 1st day of our next July term to answer the commonwealth to an Indictment found against him for playing a game of chance with cards with Nathan, a slave, Witness, Robert Clark of said court, this 4th day of May 1837 and in the 45th year of this Commonwealth ROBERT CLARK COMMONWEALTH (INDICTMENT) ROBERT RIDDLE STATE OF KENTUCKY - ESTILL COUNTYU CIRCUIT COURT - A TRUE BILL The Grand Jurors for the commonwealth of Kentuck empannelled and sworn in and for the body of the circuit, composed of the county of Estill, in the name and by the authority of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, upon their oaths represents, that Robert Riddle late of the county of Estill, that on the tenth day of March in the year 1837 in the county and circuit of Estill aforesaid, did play a game of chance with cards with Nathan a slave at and upon which game of chance so played with cards as aforesaid, diverts sums of moey and diverts pieces of property, bet, win and lost, contrary to the form of the statutes in each case made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Witness: H. Tungate We the jury find the Defendant guilty of the charge in the Indictment and determined that he make his fine to the Commonwealth in the sum of $6.09. A.W. Quinn - Judge
