    3. Charles and all, Sorry I have been so long in answering this. To tell the truth I didn't know I had this information on hand. The following is an excerpt from "THE WAY IT WAS" by John Marion Ellis II, M.D. Hope it's what you need. My grandmother's father, Leazerec Anders Cochran, was born in 1827. His mother had written his name on the fly leaf of a Bible and she may have been trying to name her baby Lazarus, spelling the name the way it sounded to her. Not many people had schooling on the frontier in those days. It made little difference, however, because the boy was never called Leazerec, but merely "Cuff". In his book "Pioneers and Heroes of Titus County", Traylor Russell tells how Cuff's parents came originally from Corinth, Mississippi. One of the relatives claimed that Cuff's father was "mean as hell". Maybe he was and maybe he wasn't, but certainly he must have been short-tempered because after getting in an argument over a bale of cotton and two slaves, he was shot to death in a gun fight. Shortly afterwards, Cuff's mother died of pneumonia, leaving Cuff, still a boy, all alone in the world. At this time, Kendall and Kizzie Lewis owned a small trading post near the edge of the Bottom. Kizzie was half-Creek Indian and half-white. Kendall was the first white man to live in Titus County. Cuff knew the couple and liked them and decided to stay with them. He regarded Kendall as "a white man turned Indian", and said he "walked like and Indian and wore an Indian blanket". Cuff was called "Cawhorn", the name given him by the Caddo Indians who were native to the Bottom, and who could not say his name "Cochran". Occasionally Kendall would give a dance at the trading post, playing his fiddle while the Indians beat their drums. Gradually Cuff matured, and began courting an Indian girl. However, trouble broke out after some Indians on Ripley Creek massacred a Mrs. Ripley, five of her children and a grandchild. Two other daughters managed to escape and hide in some canebrakes. Disturbed by this incident, Kendall took his half-Indian wife and children to the Creek Nation in Oklahoma, leaving the trading post in the hands of a man named Gooch with instructions to sell the place. Cuff was also left behind, though he did not have long to wait for company. In 1847 a thirty-family wagon train arrived in East Texas, bringing among others the Riddle family, including a young daughter, Susan Delphia Riddle who soon turned Cuff's mind away from Indian girls. Before long they were married, and Cuff built a log cabin on some upland between White Oak and Cypress creeks, and began raising a family. The story goes on to incorrectly tell of Thomas Riddle being hung by the British and also about John Riddle joining Brigham Young and going to Utah and how Isacc and family got here to Texas. Hope this helps.
