You can see the Dawes Rolls: Choctaws & Creek Indians and some other tribes as well, very easily by visiting most any local "Federal Archives" Branch location! The first microfilm roll is often held at the reference desk (it its the "surname index roll"). I think they have the Miller Rolls there too! I believe it was some years ago (about 1979) these records where closed up (for privacy)? But, whatever that was about; I am uncertain? You can see them freely now however! I know that my John Riddle was part Indian. We have always been under the impression that he was Cherokee. I have not sent off for any solid information from the Dawes Rolls, or Millers Rolls. But I do have John's application numbers and his wife, Sarah Lundry's application numbers. I also remember that the BIA advised me in a letter that if they moved off the Indian property, they somehow lost their rights as Indians, that is. I have not attempted to get the proof, as the BIA wants proof of ancestry, which I do not have. I know certain facts, as they are proven. This is by marriage licenses, and by lore handed down to relatives that can still show us the right graves, and most of what they have said has panned out as truth. Maybe a couple of years off, but still the truth. Census reports have also proven ancestry. But when our John Riddle moved to Missouri, and then one of his sons (the only one we know about) moves down to Randolph County, Arkansas, this is where the proof is lost. The original court house burned down, and my grandmother could never prove when she was born, or to whom she was born. I now have a picture of my g-g-grandfather, thanks to a new cousin (Erv Riddle), and he does look like an Indian. Many have said he looks full-blooded Cherokee. My scanner is on the blitz, so I cannot scan this picture and put it on the net. Wish I could. There is also a picture of Meredith's daughter, Aunt Jennie Riddle White. She definitely does not look like an Indian! Or at least not to me. So, if anyone has a way to check the Dawes Rolls without proving ancestry or saying to which tribe or clan of which tribe, let me know. I will find those numbers again, and we can ascertain what the records say about this Riddle branch.
