>From "The Way It Was" Copyright 1983 by John Marion Ellis, II. Chapter 1 Page 2 "In 1847 a thirth-family wagon train arrived in East Texas, bringing among others the Riddle family, including a young daughter, Susan Delphia Riddle who soon turned Cuff's mind away from Indian girls. Before long they were married, and Cuff built a log cabin on some upland between White Oak and Cypress creeks, and began raising a family. Originally Thomas Riddle had come from England and settled in South Carolina where he joined the South Carolina Militia. While fighting for independence under General Francis Marion during the American Revolution, Thomas Riddle was captured and hanged by the British. He left a boy, Isacc, born in 1777, who grew up in Kentucky, married and had several children. In 1846, one of Isaac's sons, John Riddle, became interested in the Mormon religion after Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, was murdered by a mob. Smith's colony of converts were left in Illinois without leadership. Brigham Young took over and John Riddle joined Brigham Young and other Mormons and went to Utah. Isaac Riddle and his family left Northern Kentucky for Texas in 1847. They cut down trees, split and hewed logs to match, bound them together as flat boats, loaded their families and all their belongongs and began floating down the Cumberland River to the Ohio. They floated through the mouth of the Ohio, down the Mississippi to the mouth of the Red River, and back up to Shreveport where they joined a caravan heading West, ending up eventually in the Bottom." The "Cuff" referred to in the story is Leazerec Anders Cochran, great grandfather of the author of this book. This story goes to show that, just because it's in a book, doesn't meen it is true.
