Laura Clark, I have a Alvis Riddle in my family. What I have on him is a follows: Alvis Ben Riddle (Son of John Riddle Jr.) was born about 1812 in Chatham County, NC. He married Rhoda Ann Leader abt. 1839. Children of Alvis and Rhoda are: Jefferson Hill Riddle b. 1841 Stoddard Co. Missouri Rebecca Jane Riddle b. 1842 " Mary Elizabeth Riddle b. 1844 " Lydia A. Riddle b. 1846 " Martin Phillip Riddle b. 1847 " John Joseph Riddle b. 1849. " Alvis did have a sister named Rebecca J. Riddle b. December 21, 1820 in NC. and died 1873 in Stoddard Co. Missouri . She married John W. McMillian on July 2, 1839 in Hardin Co. TN. John was born April 9, 1813 in Canada and died Oct. 31, 1889 Dexter, Stoddard Co. Missouri. John Riddle Jr.(father of Alvis and Rebecca) had 10 children. He marrried Elizabeth ?. More information on this line can be found on Danny Riddle's web site. "Solving the Riddle" decendants of William Julus Riddle. I believe JOhn is in Generation 3 and Alvis Generation 4. Is this the John you are looking for? I just received a letter from them with some information that maybe someone else might also be able to use; "In Goodspeeds History of Southeast Missouri, 1888 on p.1042 there is information that I found on the Alvis Riddle that your cousin passed on to you. Rebecca J. Riddle m. in 1840 in Hardin Co. TN John McMullen - they moved to Stoddard Co. MO in 19841 - she died in 1864. I think (could be wrong) that Rebecca (bc1822) is the sister of Alvis Riddle. What do you think? Also, on p. 907, ibid, George T. Price b1846, moved to New Madrid Co., MO in 1866 and married 21 Nov 1866 Mary Emma Riddle. She d. 1879. Alvis' dau. Mary E. was 16 on the 1860 census, making her the right age for this marriage. On p.1180 it stated that on 20 Aug. 1876 Miss Mary R. Riddle, d/o John Riddle who is living in Union twp, Dunklin Co. MO married William W. White. Don't know where this family fits in, if at all. But, evidently the southeast section of Missouri certainly had its share of Riddles!" Now, this does not yet fit my Riddles! But I am sure, that it will fit Mike Conner's Riddles. I cannot get a hold of this man, as none of the return addresses are working for him. I don't know if it's his ISP, or what. But I have been unable to contact him so I hope he sees this. I would dearly love to show that this Alvis Riddle is a kin to our John Riddle. The Mary Emma Riddle is not my Mary E. Riddle, as she would have only been 5 years old when she got married. I do not know this Mary R. Riddle. Our John Riddle lived in Des Arc, Missouri, Iron County, Union Township. However, he lived there 1860-1880. Beyond that, I have no idea exactly when he moved there or when he died. I will write a letter this evening to the Iron County Historical Society. But if someone else would like their address, here it is; Iron County Historical Society 123 W. Wayne St. Ironton, MO 63650-1327 They have a wonderful genealogical room at their library, and I would dearly love to spend a couple of years perusing!!! Happy Rootin!
