    1. [RIDDLE-L] Re: New Riddle on Riddle Knob.

    3. Hi Riddle Researchers who are interested in William Riddle (tory): I thought you might be interested in what Jack Goins sent to me concerning the possibility that there were two William Riddle's in Montgomery Co., VA between 1769 and 1781: At 01:49 PM 7/10/1999 -0400, you wrote: > >Mary Hill writes: > >There are three possibilities I can see concerning William Riddle (tory) and who his parents were: > >SNIP > >3) There were actually two William Riddle's in Montgomery Co., VA between 1769 and 1781, and one was definitely the relative of Moses Ridel. Maybe the other one was our William Riddle (tory). That is a suposition that some have made. I find nothing to support this theory, but until we can disprove it, I have to say it is a possibility. > >Mary, Jack Goins responded: When I first went to Riddles Knob, I found that a John Brown owned the Riddles Knob land, which was purchased in 1778. This is what convinced me that this William Riddle was the son of Moses, and my forebearer. Because Moses Ridley had been a chain bearer for John Brown 17 years before, in 1761, in Orange Co., NC. And when Betty and I first went to Christiansburg and found the Fincastle court record of Wm. Herbert vs, Caijah Bunch & Wm. Ridley this Court record convinced me that the Montgomery County Wm. was the son of Moses from Orange County, NC. Caijah Bunch was on the same tax list with John Brown and Moses Ridley in Orange Co., NC in 1755. Coupled with the Montgomery records of John Riddle, whose name was also Ridley on his Rev. War Pension application, and he said in his Rev. War Pension that he was born on the Flatt River, Orange Co., NC - right where the land was that Moses Ridley was chain bearer for John Brown. > >About this time Doug Jenkins gave me a list of Montgomery County Militia which includes William Riddle and John Riddle. Doug's List In this order: > >Benjamin Sexton Charles Saxton David Collins George Collins Meriday Collins (Meridith Collins) Lewes Collens Elisha Collins (Refused to take Oath of Allegiance 1777) John Sexton William Bowlin William Riddle John Riddle Samuel Collins John Collins >All these Collin's came from Orange Co., NC too. >I know that Doug wrote this list when he and I went to Richmond. (Soldiers of Fincastle County Virginia, 1774 by Kegley) > I looked in the book they have in our library of Kegley and did not find this list, and you have not found the list, but I know Doug copied the list and I know it has to be what he found. Doug was doing research on the Melungeons. It had nothing to do with the Riddles, except he noted that he believed they were all from Orange County, NC, and he only copied the ones from Orange, or that he thought were Melungeons. He says there were other names on the List that he did not copy. > >This is my own opinion. Your whole William Riddle Story hinges on Moses Riddle, because everything is tied to him. Your latest find on Lovelady's story about Wm. Nichols, coupled with Draper letter saying that Nichols married Riddle's sister - this whole thing is woven together from Orange County, NC, to Pittslyvania County, Va., to Montgomery County, Va. > >Maybe I should add this story to our Riddle List. I was in Wilkesboro yesterday, spent about 3 hours with Joan Beaty, and from out of the blue she tells me about the FIRST descendants of the Tory William Ridle who came there, to Wilkesboro. She showed me her scrap book, pictures, story and all. I believe it was 1989. They were from SC, said they believe Col. Riddle was their forebearer, the family had him as a Col. not a Capt. After Wm. Riddle's hanging these Riddles fled to SC. This makes sense due to the fact the British were there. Some of the William Riddle of Watauga and Riddle Knob's descendants fled to the British. If I looked at the writeup right, this group was from a son John. Trouble is, we already have a John, son of William Riddle (tory) who went to Bledsoe Co., TN. Therefore, I think these people may just have been speculating that they descend from William Riddle (tory), or John was a later generation in the family and we don't have the name of whoever it was that went to SC of William Riddle's children. > >I told Joan Beaty that I had enough evidence to convince a Jury the William Riddle of Riddle Knob is my forebearer, and was the son of Moses. >Jack > > > >
