Hi all. I assume that you all know that Frank Riddle who married Tobey Riddle (later called Winema), the interpreters for the Modoc Indians, was born in KY and traveled to Oregon Territory. At this point in time, I do not know the age when he left KY, but I would assume it to be when he was very young, maybe about 12 years of age. I will keep researching that end of it. Maybe someone on our list could give me that information. Tobey was about 12 when Frank bought her for two horses. Later on Frank and Tobey did get married in a civil ceremony. I assume this to be around 1850-1860s. I have discovered a lot of interesting information regarding their life acting as interpreters during the Modoc Indian War. Frank was interpreter for the Peace Commission and for the Army and Tobey, of course, was the interpreter for Capt. Jack and the Modocs.
