Hi Carla: I am currently in the process of researching Tobey "Winema" Riddle. I know that her and her husband Frank were interpreters and that she and her husband lived with the Modocs for awhile. Winema was considered according to some historians as a heroine of the Modoc Lava Beds massacre. Their son Jefferson C. Riddle did write the book The History of the Modoc War. I have been trying to locate a copy of this book and have several sources trying to track a copy down for me. Although from what I understand, Jefferson's book was not too kindly toward the Modoc side of the wars, this may have been just one researcher's impression though. Winema was a peace seeker. Frank was a rancher and was one of the original Riddle families to come to Oregon. I will keep you and all Riddle researchers informed of what I find as I go along in my research. I have recently purchased several books on the history of the Indian Wars and I am sure that I will find out more.
