    3. I have been reading your mail about the Willliam Riddle family.b 1740 (or earlier). I am a direct descendant of John Riddle, b 10 Feb 1775, M. Sarah (Sary) Johnson. John is an older brother of your Isaac. I believe I have corresponded with you before. My question is - have you confirmed where William, b 1740, was born? I show either Flatt River, Orange County, Va or Scotland. I cannot find a ship record of his coming to the Americas. When did your Isaac move to Texas? I have him still living in Mo 1834 where he voted along with Jesse and Emanuel. Was he married to Anna Grizzel and Grusida Gisser? 2. <PRE>Charles--very interesting information and insight, especially the part about good and bad folks on each side. A question, please. Some references give her name as Harriett Roberts, not Happy Rogers, and even show William as a Patriot. Have you accounted for these discrepancies in your own research? thanks---Jim Riddle

    2. Hi Charles I'm a bit lost here. I copied info I found excerpted out of a book or two. Did I quote something that didn't set well? I am a direct descendant of Joseph L Riddle. The 1775 birthdate is from Roger Hart's long research - but I think he put John Riddle's year instead of Joseph's. (John RIDDLE b: 10 Feb 1775 in Montgomery Co., VA); You are fortunate in that all of Isacc's family has been identified. We are still working on Joseph's. Who do you show Happy Rogers Riddle re-marrying... 2. Joseph L. Riddle was the twin of my ancestor Isaac William Riddle Born: April 1777 (Montgomery County, Virginia) Died: 30 November 1861 (Titus County, Texas) Married: 21 May 1801 (Russell County, Tennessee?) Some unreliable sources had their birth year as 1775 but it was 1777. Jodie, the twins went with their mother (Happy Rogers Riddle) to Tennessee where she remarried. A lot of families, caught on the wrong side of the American Revolution, went to Kentucky and Tennessee to leave behind the past. Happy died about 1784 in Kyles Ford, Hawkins Co., Tennessee at about the age of 36. The twins' father was William Riddle who was hung in the Spring of 1781 in either Watauga Co. or Wilkesboro, North Carolina by a corrupt colonial leader (yes there were good and bad on both sides, it was not as black and white as the textbooks tell us). There is more to this story than just William being on the Loyalist side during the Revolution. Charles

    1. [RIDDLE] James Riddle, North Carolina
    2. Daniel W. Ridley
    3. I am still trying to locate information on a James Riddle and his wife, Eliza A. Riddle. According to the 1850 census records for Hawkins Co., TN, James would have been born in 1812 and Eliza in 1817. Both of them are shown as having been born in North Carolina. This same census lists three children; Jane, age 4, born in VA; Ann (my great-grandmother), age 2, born in VA; and James, age 7 months, born in TN. The 1840 census records for Wilkes County, North Carolina, lists a family headed by a James Riddle which contains "Free White Persons" as follows: one male aged 20-30; one female aged 20-30; and two children, one male and one female, both less than 5 years old. Also in the 1840 NC census in Moore County, there is another family listed as being headed by a James Riddle which included the following: one male aged 20-30; one male aged 15-20; one male aged 5-10; and one female aged 30-40. Since my James Riddle would have been 28 in 1840, either of these families might be the one that I am looking for. Does anyone have any information on either of these two NC families that, if nothing else, will allow me to eliminate them from my searching? Some brick walls are awfully tough to get past! Thanks, Warren Ridley Morristown, TN
