This page shows a Nancy Riddle born 1800 who would be age 70 in 1870 MO census. http://www.weberontheweb.com/FamTree/Testing/f_25.html#9
Yes but he most probably related somehow. My Green Joseph Riddle was born 1824 Ala. and was in Ala. in 1870 and after 1875 in Talladega do not know where he landed. Still trying to find his parents. Another thing, I HAD a stack of info on the Talladega Riddle's of Mariah Forge-the iron workers-they are not my Riddle's apparently, the other group who came down from Pa. Gretchen Williams PoteetGourd@aol.com is from this line and is unable to get posted. She asked that I try to get this info for her-post on Riddle list. Hope I can hold of it again. If you see it would you please send me an email or website as I am trying to help her. Thanks much. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: <Wrakj1234@aol.com> To: <RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 8:45 PM Subject: Re: [RIDDLE] Isaac and Joseph Riddle (more) > Sorry Frances, I had already mailed you a copy of Green Riddle. Sorry Frances, I had already mailed you a copy of Green Riddle. I take it that was not the one you had hoped for. ELW
Dear Russ, Since you mentioned Fred Plum, I wanted to let you know that I am a descendant of Isaac Roger Riddle and Hannah Longstreet Blackstone. Let me know how you descend (we may have corresponded in the past). I have been doing more research on the Blackstone side of the family and I have discovered that some of Fred's information on that side is also a little skewed. I have corresponded recently with other Blackstone descendants and would like to correspond more with descendants of Isaac and Hannah as my grandfather grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Hello Cousin, Charles Smith ... I have talked to you in the past! I realize what you are saying about Fred Plum's work!!!! I understand it completely! I just have never had opportunity to see this book that is suppose to exist, one time created by Fred Plum. And, just out of curiosity ... if nothing else I'd like to add this old volume to my file family tree collection. While his work is only a theory. Certainly, any work done of the family I would like to have. I understand that Wm. Riddle has not been proved to have come from Scotland ... mostly I was just noting the source(?) of these rumors that are always rising up! But neither has it been proved where he came from for certain. As to his having possibly come from Scotland - I am not particularly inclined to say that was true ... just would like a copy of that old, old research on the matter of Our RIDDLE family tree no matter it lacks verification ... it is probably just folk lore ... an unproven oral tradition at best perhaps ... whatever you'd want to call it? It is still interesting to me ... something generation(s) may have believe perhaps with respect to our ancestry. As you point out though Mary V. Hill and Jack H. Goins are more recent and verified in their research of our Riddle family true ... and faith and trust in their work more acturate as well! This is something that is fairly well known and established by time and those who have been on the RIDDLE LIST for any number of years knows this to be true as well! It was the Allen's who were descended from Adoniram Allen and Lucinda Riddle (Wilkes County N.C.) that came to Clay County Kentucky. Thier son Job and Adoniram's father who was also an Adoniram Allen settled near the Oneida area. I know that Boone, Owen, and Bath Counties are in Northern Kentucky. Clay County is in Southeastern Kentucky. Job's grandfather Adoniram came to Clay County before 1810. Job did not come here until between 1830 and 1840. To my knowledge the only Riddle in Clay County in 1840 was a Unas Riddle. He is listed as a free man of color. Was William foreign born and was his wife b. SC? I am still searching for the parents of my Green Joseph Riddle born 1824 Ala. most probably Talladega and trying to connect to the Riddle's in family of Squire Elam Riddle as they also were in Groesbeck and my fa said we had family there. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: <CharlesGenUK@aol.com> To: <RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 20, 2003 4:05 PM Subject: [RIDDLE] Isaac and Joseph Riddle (more) > I have noticed that I missed responding to a couple of questions on the > Riddle Digest. > > Jim... I have noticed that I missed responding to a couple of questions on the Riddle Digest. Jim... I have seen Isaac and Joseph's mother as both Harriett Roberts and Happy Rogers. I think back then Happy was short for Harriet. While I don't have the specific reason to hand, there was a reason (from Mary Hill, Jack Goins or others) that I settled on Happy Rogers as Isaac and Joseph's mother. The Patriot cover story for William Riddle probably started with his sons in an attempt to bring honor (or not bring dishonor) to the family. Jodie... I think that when I was publishing the Isaac and Joseph List, which listed all known children of the two as well as descendents researching each child, we pretty much established all of the children of Isaac and Joseph. Roger Hart probably did just mix up the birth year of Joseph and John (Isaac and Joseph's elder brother who was born in 1775). Charles Smith
I seemed to have stirred things up with my message about the twins Isaac and Joseph Riddle, sons of William Riddle. Unfortunately I have been unable to respond for a couple of days. Most of my notes are on another computer system and it will take time for me to access them. If I can, I will address several points that have been brought up over the last couple of Riddle Digests. For awhile (when this list was quite active on the subject several years ago) I used to maintain a list of children of Isaac and Joseph (dates, etc) and email addresses of descendents who were researching them. I seem to remember getting the list up to 40 people or so, but that was several years ago. First of all, Fred Plum's book is a good starting point but many things over the years have been proved wrong. The whole idea that William Riddle was a Colonial hero that was caught by the British and hung in 1781 was disproved several years ago by Mary Hill amongst others (sorry Jack, if you or others were instrumental in proving this theory). He was indeed hung in 1781 but by a fairly corrupt colonial Colonel. His eldest son possibly died along side him. As I have mentioned before, especially in the wilderness that was anything but the Eastern seaboard, things were murky in the western parts of North Carolina, Virginia, etc. Carol... Isaac never lived in Missouri (this might be another Isaac Riddle). Isaac, who by the way was a hatter by trade, moved with his wife, Anna Grizzel (who I have had great difficulty tracing other than her father was William Grizzel and she was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina on 18 July 1784) and their son's family (Elam Riddle and Matilda Simpson) from Kentucky to NE Texas, settling and founding Mt Pleasant, Texas. I have a picture of Elam and Matilda late in life, 1870s or so. No one has accurately, to my knowledge, found out where Isaac, Joseph and (your ancestor) John's father William Riddle was born, nor has anyone found any ship records to indicate that he came to America from overseas. Isaac died 30 November 1861 (Titus County, Texas) and Anna died 29 December 1856 (Titus County, Texas). Kim and Susie... the Isaac Riddle/Elam Riddle side of the family moved to Boone County, Kentucky after leaving Eastern Tennessee. Not sure though the relationship geographically between Boone County, Owen County, Bath County and Oneida (Clay County). The two people (hope I haven't left anyone out that did the tons of research on these Riddles) who I would trust the most regarding this family are Mary Hill and Jack Goins. They have found so much over the years and both have written extensive books on these Riddles, far outweighing Plum on historical facts. I hope this has helped more than it has confused, Charles Smith Note: if anyone is researching the Elam Riddle (son of Isaac Riddle) line, I have researched an extensive amount about his wife's side (Matilda Simpson). I descend through their daughter Susan Delphia Riddle.
