1. Re: [RIDDLE] Re: RIDDLE-D Digest V03 #14
2. Hello Charles, Here the information you asked me about ... Jodie sent this to me, so we can credit her 'Thank her' for finding this site! Date: 01/17/2003 5:17:12 PM Pacific Standard Time From: Dayjovu Elam Riddle, Surveyor, in Texas ... "From Indian Springs To The Jordan River" Book: http://www.sulphurriver.net/evergreen.html I inquiried about the Books which both mention the Riddle family lines. The one above is twenty and the other book "The History of Titus County" is fourty five dollars and five dollars for any order for shiping and handling. Franklin County Genealogy Society P.O. Box 1563 Mt. Vernon, TX 75457 The "History of Titus County" was originally published as a two Volume set, now re-published as one volume. It gives a good breakdown of the Riddle family so I am told. The other book, "From Indian Springs ..." I am told is a collection of stories about Titus County, both books written by Traylor Russell. A excerpt is at the above website of this book. Hope this fills you in about the book ... haven't received the books myself yet. As always Charles you are a wealth of information about the family! Would like to ad your branch of Our Riddle / Grizzell / Stephenson / Simpson family into my family tree records some day when we can get cordinated to share. About the other book you mention ... I agree that Elam Riddle is the one actually pictured on page 25 of the book "Images of the Past ... " as does another cousin who has seen this picture before it ever was published in books. Did you realize that book also gave two different birth dates for Arelda Jane (Stephenson) Sparks daughter of AMERICA JANE RIDDLE ... reference pages 14 which gives Arelda's birth date as May 14, 1846 (the date I believed was correct and the only date I had ever heard or seen). While on page 38 of said book it gives her birth date contray as Sept. 11, 1846. I'd love pictures of these my Sparks relatives if anyone lives near Gladewater Cemetery in Texas to take the pictures!? This book is one that has been talked about a few years ago on this RIDDLE LIst before. So, this date conflict besides the misidentified photo are probably not the only errors in the book I am referring to (otherwise it is a very nice book!): http://palmermedia.etxmp.com/osb/itemdetails.cfm/ID/5 There is also a book called, "REFLECTIONS" --- (In the above link) --- Does anyone know of this book?? DOES It also have family pictures of RIDDLE and descendant family photos in it?? There are probably other links for the same books on the Internet as well. I put this link for "Images of the Past ... " because I figured soon as I named the book someone would want to know where to get it ... or more info on it. Charles, however did you get to be living in England? Just curious ... always enjoy hearing from you. Hope I answered your question Charles, and hope I anticipated questions other might ask concerning this other book we referred to here in. I wonder if the book will ever update it's content with corrections in future reprints of that book. Thanks, Cousin Russ Merryman (Descendant of America Jane Riddle) =================== In a message dated 01/26/2003 3:14:14 AM Pacific Standard Time, CharlesGenUK@aol.com writes: > Subj: [RIDDLE] Re: RIDDLE-D Digest V03 #14 > Date: 01/26/2003 3:14:14 AM Pacific Standard Time > From: CharlesGenUK@aol.com > Reply-to: RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com > To: RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com > Sent from the Internet > > Russ... 1. [RIDDLE] RE: RIDDLE > GOOCHLAND, VA
2. Hello, I saw your email that mentioned the Riddle family in Goochland Co.,VA. I am searching for my Riddle family in Virginia and would like to give you some names to see if you have any connection to my family. Here is what I have proven so far, starting with my ggrandfather. Riddle, James Robert b. 1840 in Virginia d.abt. 1907 in Petersburg,Va. Wife: Alma Jeanette Sheffield b.abt.1842 Sussex Co.,VA. Children: John William Peyton b. 1866 Sussex Co. Martha Virginia Everett Jefferson George Junius Edward Hattie Ruth Susan Lucretia James R. Riddle and Jeanette Sheffield m. 1865 Madison,NC - Halifax Co. I believe James had a brother, John F. Riddle b. 1840 in Virginia although I have no proof so far, just a genealogist report that said she found a listing of the two in Sussex Co. and they were listed as brothers. I have also been told by family members that this Riddle branch had Indian blood. I have been searching for ten years and have had help from cousins and three deferent genealogists but have not been able to get any info on my James R. I have his marriage certificate from North Carolina but it only has the name of the man that married them. His Civil War records show no names of his parents, no record of his death, but that was in the years that Virginia did not keep death records. Cannot find where he is buried Going under the assumption that he is John Flemming Riddle's brother then he may be related to the Riddle family in Goochland Co. I have the marriage certificate of John F. Riddle who married Martha Ramey on Dec.25,1856 in Surry Co.,VA. John listed his parents as being William R. Riddle and Elizabeth Wooldridge of Goochland Co.,VA. I think this would be proof of John's parents. But when I looked up the Riddell/Riddle family from Goochland Co. in the History of the Ancient Rydales by G. T. Ridlon, which is almost like a Riddle bible, I found William and Elizabeth Riddell and it listed them having six sons I believe but none by the name of John F. or James R. Riddle. This is most confusing. But I will list the children of John F. and Martha R. Riddle. They had seven children and I think they were all born in Sussex Co. as was the children of James and Jeannett. John and Martha Riddle Children: Ella Nora b. 1856 Mary Ann Joseph William Rosa Lee John Howard Mattie Lou Mark H. Please let me know if there is any connection to your Riddles, thank you. 1. [RIDDLE] Maria Forge
2. This is turning out to be a good week. I've discovered that there are at least 4 other Riddle researchers in the San Antonio area, have found Maria Forge, and bet on Tampa Bay. So that you can rule them out, I'll list the Riddle brothers, from PA, connected to Maria Forge, Talladega, AL, starting in 1843: Samuel Stuart Riddle, d Aug 1851, in AL, m. Maria Bradley, (for whom the Forge was named). Edmund Ross Riddle Walter Dulaney Riddle, b abt 1813 in Bedford, PA, d 16 June 1852, and who had a daughter named Laura. George M. Riddle, also associated with Rob Roy Forge. John Corbett Riddle, b 1816 in PA, and died 1885 in Pilot Point, TX, m Jane Joyce Thomas. James P. or Joseph P. Riddle was also a brother, but not connected to Maria Forge. He d 1836 in Goliad, TX Maria Forge, located on Talladega Creek, made iron which they stamped with the family crest, a boar's head. Riddle Mill Foundry was errected 1848 by Edward Spang of PA, and was located 1/2 mile from Maria Forge. I've had to turn off my spell check in order to post to the list, so hope there's no inventive spelling here. Gretchen Williams

3. Hi! New Braunfels is not that far from me. About 45 miles going thru Bastrop. I like going to the Outlet Mall to shop. My daughter and I go few times a year. We live between LaGrange and Giddings in the boonies. I haven't done a whole lot of research on my Riddle lineage as yet. Still working on Head, Peavler & Cordray lines along with my husband's family - Carrico's. My grandparents Oral Riddle / Lavena McCollum Riddle are buried in North Salem Cemetery there in North Salem. North Salem Cemetery was originally owned and land donated by a Head for the cemetery location and was originally named 'Head Cemetery' until sometime in early 1899 / 1900's when name changed to North Salem Cemetery. From what little I have gathered on my lineage of Riddle, I believe we do have some lines the same as the name of John Riddle is familiar with my Grandfather Oral Riddle lineage. I am going to have to dig thru paperwork and see what all / little I do have on my Riddle lines. I have a cousin named Donald Riddle that lives in New Brunswick, MO.- retired schoolteacher. His father was [Oral] Eldon Riddle. He [Uncle Eldon] also buried in North Salem Cemetery. I have probably confused you completely now. ?? But I do know we have some lineages the same, I am sure & going to dig paperwork out and go thru it again. Then will let you know. OK? Be careful on your drive back to Texas for your visit. Until later. I will be in contact with you.
