William's wife remarried shortly after. The reason it's suspected that William T's father was Moses Ridley/Riddle is because William had a son named Moses who was about 15 when he and his father were killed. -- Jodie

    1. [RIDDLE] Response Received re:Mary Higgins source of info query
    2. List I got a response from the owner of the web page referencing John Riddle m. to Mary Higgins. I didn't think I could forward it to the list, so I copied the info below. This John Riddle settled in Laurens Co, SC. -- Jodie Re: Mary Higgins source of info query  Date: 2/9/2003 8:11:33 PM Eastern Standard Time From: <A HREF="mailto:fredd@sonic.net">fredd@sonic.net</A> To: <A HREF="mailto:Dayjovu@aol.com">Dayjovu@aol.com</A> All my Riddle information comes from <underline>An Intimate History of The Family of John Riddle 1775-1855 The first Riddle to settle in Laurens County, SC </underline>Compiled by Mrs. Kathleen R Garrett, Laurens County, South Carolina. It was published in 1987.  About 120 pages. In the first paragraph of the book she states, "We do not know for certain where John came from, but he settled in Laurens County, South Carolina." She goes on to state that the Riddles were supposed to have migrated from Pennsylvania through Virginia to South Carolina.  In the first 1790 Federal Census there were no Riddles in Laurens County but in the 1800 census John is listed as head-of-household with a wife and 2 small sons living in Laurens County. She speculates that: "There is record of an older John Riddle, also married to a Mary, in what is now Kewshaw County, (my note here - there is no Kewshaw county in SC, I think she meant Kershaw county)  SC.  In his will of 9/27/1780, he leaves 'to my loving wife Mary, one third of all my estate real and personal......until my children come to the full age of 21 years......my four children James, John, Patrick, and George.......friends John Fields, Patrick McFadden, and William Twaddle, exrs.'  James made a will in Kershaw (Camden) in 1826.  We find George in York in District in 1810. We do not know what happened to Patrick and can only speculate that possibly this same John as our John who came to Laurens County." My John married Mary Higgins, they had 12 children and he died in 1855.  His will is on file in Laurens County. It seems that you and I are talking about 2 different John Riddles. -Fredd ------------------------------------------------- At 07:14 PM 2/9/03 EST, you wrote: >>>> My name is Jodie and I am sending this query on behalf of the Riddle discussion group (RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com).  We are wondering if you can tell us the source for your info on the wife of John Riddle b. 1775 being Mary Higgins. He married Sary Johnson 1797 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee; born March 01, 1775 in Surry Co., North Carolina; died 1837 in Pulaski Co., Missouri.   Notes for John Riddle: John was apparently left behind when his mother remarried and moved to Tennessee. 2. Susie I'm still confused. I show a Martha CaRmack married to Johnson Rake Riddle Riddle of KY. Children are [2] Johnson T Riddle, Rosie L Riddle. Lisa Riddle sent me the info by email with a picture of her grandfather, Joseph Lemual riddle, born in 1877 in moultan alabama. 2. Jim I can't really answer your question without a aprox. birthdate/place of "your" John Riddle m. to Mary (possibly) Higgins. The info I have on the John Riddle son of William T Riddle [b. 1740 in Flatt River, Orange CO, NC {<A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymercer/grants.html">http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymercer/grants.html</A> } is from Mary V. Hill, Utah, a professional genealogist who researched the grandson of William T. Riddle who became a Morman. The other source I have annotated is "The Riddle, Riddell, Ruddel Trail" by Nettie Benson. But I no longer have the book as it was thru library loan. Wasn't the original discussion on John Riddle born February 10, 1775? 3. I realize that this site is supposed to be strictly for finding Riddle families, but...........you need to lighten up!! The Riddle families seem to be a fairly close knit group and if you don't want to participate in all that goes along with being a family, perhaps you should opt out of this message board. Getting a personal note once in awhile, or a joke or a comment about the weather is certainly not spam! -----Original Message----- From: jlmays@vzinet.com [mailto:jlmays@vzinet.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 12:46 PM To: RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RIDDLE] Not Your Day! I have copies of the Leonardo Andrea collection from the archives in Columbia, SC-----there is a page showing John Riddle of Laurens with wife "Mary", but no last name---it shows 10 children but omits William and James-----I feel very confident that Mary's name was Higgins and that she is the daughter of one of the many Higgins families shown in the 1790 census in Laurens---but not the daughter of William as we have tried to connect her to, as the census shows no daughters in the household----my guess would be James, John or Newton---all names of John and Mary's sons----in the absence of a will for any of these Higgins, we may never know the full story------ Jim Riddle

    2. Wrak, Re: Spam Filter's. Those things can be a real pain when they are installed on your server's main operating system. They will block spam, but will also keep some e-mails from getting through to you as well. Seems they recognize some individuals as an advertisement or business, and bounce them back. Have several family and friends that it has happened to with their servers. Was a bad problem as some of them were replies to message board or "List" queries on surnames. I have had AOL for two years and have never had a spam problem. It all depends on where your e-mail address ends up, that is if you order off the net, or the address is posted somewhere, then you are "free game" for the spam senders. Those spam filters are hard to disable too, the ISP techs do not want to be bothered with disabling it to your e-mail address, so will say is your "Outlook Express" or is a problem with the sender's ISP, but "returned message" will plainly state, "due to spam filter". If you have not personally installed one, then it is in the main operating system of the ISP, and they can be more trouble than they are worth, especially to a researcher who has posted queries on various message boards and lists.
