Reba, I just happened to come across 2 Riddles that were listed with hometown of Alton in the WWII Serviceman Database on the Indiana State Library website. Perhaps they are related to your Riddle line. M brick wall -- My gggrandfather was James Riddle born Oct. 27, 1823 in Scotland (we think). He married Marguerite Pennman who was from Toronto, Canada. They lived in Detroit when first married and he "ran" on a steamship from Detroit to Duluth. At one time he was assigned to the ship called "Lady Elgin" where he was a steward. Lady Elgin sank, but fortunately he didn't make the run that time. He and his wife then moved to Toledo, Ohio and lived there from about1860 to 1878? They then moved to Lenawee County, MI. Their children James, Harriet, Joseph and Janett were all born in Toledo. At one time they ran a hotel in Toledo and then bought a large house and took in boarders. He died in Minneapolis, but was buried in Adrian, Michigan. I am decended from Harriet, who married Frederick Meyers. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family? Thanks for any help you can give me - Joyce joycevan@gulftel.com
Do you know the names of any or all of the 13 children??? My ancestor Thomas Riddle came from the New Hampshire are somewhere, and married into a family in Moulton Mass. Listers, I am looking for an Anna Catherine Riddle born ca. 1825 in PA according to the 1880 census. She married Jonathan W. Stoop possibly between 1843 and 1846 and resided in Trenton, NJ the balance of her life. She is one of my brick walls. She has gone by Anna, Catherine and Anna Catherine in different records. It is entirely possible she is from the Carlisle, PA area or the greater Philadelphia area. She died in February 1878 and is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Trenton. Her obituary states nothing of her family ancestry and there is no death certificate available for her. Does anyone have a Riddle fitting this rather loose description. Her children are as follows: Mary R. Stoop, born ca. 1846 Charles Riddle Stoop, born 10/05/1849 Martha Stoop, born 12/28/1851 Sarah Wilhelmina Stoop, born 10/02/1855 Emma Stoop, born 10/02/1857 Susan Stoop, born 12/15/1859 Matilda Stoop, born ca. 1862 and Wilhelmina Stoop, born 01/1866 Possibly the naming patterns could yield some clues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks William J. Stoop

Welcome New Members!!! It is great to know we have some new additions to our RIDDLE family list. I am Judith RIDDLE Parker, live in Birmingham, Alabama. Just a few tips to some of you not familiar with posting, maybe I can help a bit by giving you a few pointers that it took myself a while to learn. When posting your queries, for those of us unfamiliar with your lines, and to aid any of us that might have something to help you out, note the following guidelines. This will apply to us old timer's too, as we forget we are aquiring new members to the list and they may not be familiar with our line as well. SUBJECT LINE: Please put the name of your RIDDLE in the subject line of your e-mail and perhaps abbreviations for their locations, such as NC, or VA, or Canada, and an approximate year, such as b abt so and so (born about so and so). This will help us to know more as soon as we open the e-mail. DATES: This is so important. If you know the dates that the person was born, married, died, etc, please post them. If you do not have an accurate date, a born about so and so will do, perhaps taken from an age given on a census record, and married circa so and so, died before or about so and so. LOCATIONS: This is also very important. Where born, where married, where died. This includes state, county, and city or township, if known. SPOUSES: The spouse of the RIDDLE ancestor is also important even if only a first name or a nickname is the only thing known. No telling who might also know this person as well or recognize the name, as it just might be in their records or familiar to them. ANCESTORS: If you know the name of the parents (even the parents of the non-RIDDLE) that is also helpful, remembering to add all of the infomation available. All of the ancestors names that are known will be helpful, as in grandparents, great-grandparents, and if you are fortunate to go even further back, those too. SIBLINGS: Brothers and sisters names are also helpful, if known, also who they married and any pertinent information, there is much to be said for the who, where, and when. If is unknown, put that in too, as unknown, just like using born about so and so, or died before so and so (perhaps were not found in the later census records or they married again, found later with a new spouse and children listed on the prior census). Someone just may descend from one of your particular ancestor's brother and sister, and they may be able to help you to fill in some blanks. I have a large genealogical library. I also have some books on land and military warrants in Alabama. I could perhaps be more helpful to folks if I had detailed information to go on. We are all here doing a most beloved hobby and helping one another is the key to success. I have had many to help me through the years and continue to return the favor. Genealogy is the only hobby I know where a step backward is considered progress. Thanks, and happy searching to one and all!! Judi Parker
Hi - Just offering some help. The closest I would guess is Isaac Riddle's line - so I cc'd a descendant of Isaac who posts to the Riddle Board. You might want to change the subject line when you post a query - so folks searching in the future can quickly see names & places. Some people just scan for names & move on without opening the digest subject mail. You might also want to add aprox dates too in the body of your query. Hope this helps. Looking forward to helping you out.
