    2. Leslie Whiteley, You sent me Chloe RIDDLE born abt 1810, m to William Shelton. Shelton Laurel, North Carolina for the "orpaned" Riddle list and she's been added. I found the following on the new LDS site on the net. Cloah Riddle, married William Shelton 18 Dec 1829, Shelton Laurel, Buncombe, North Carolina File Number - 1761004 If you don't have this record, you might want to request from your nearest FHC. 3. Hi Sharon, Problem is that the most recent census available is 1920. The 1930 Census will be released in the year 2002. So, I guess you have to wait until then for that census. The census records are available at some university libraries, and at LDS Family History centers. Also, USGENWEB county sites often have portions of the census for their county on their list. Addess is: http://www.usgenweb.com Trouble is, your need is not going to be available until 2002 - Sorry! Mary At 11:55 PM 7/1/1999 EDT, you wrote: >Mary, how do I get a census of a certain county. 2. Ronny, The Cumberland Co., KY RIDDLES are also from William "the Tory" RIDDLE. I do have John and his son Johnson in my data base, but not much else. Except for Johnson nine children. I would appreciate anything on that line you are willing to share. I'll have to look at a map and see how close Jackson, Marshal, and Winston Co., AL are to each other. Did John live in AL or just his descendants? I show John deceased in Hawkin Co., TN. If John children lived down there that may explain if some of John's nieces and nephews might have moved south. I don't know if you are aware or not, but John's brother, James, is unaccounted for in the 1830 Census of Kentucky. He's probably in AL or NC. I sure would like to find him. Your John was born 10 Feb 1775, right??? Robin L. Poindexter

    1. [RIDDLE-L] Stephen Riddle Green Co, IN
    2. Hi Riddles, Thanks to everyone that has posted their "orphaned" Riddle families so far. I am compiling the list of who has what Riddle family. I don't however have the means to compile a database of everyone's GEDCOM files and upload to the net - so we'll need another volunteer to do that. Anyone?? But please continue your "orphaned" Riddle to the list and in a few days, I will send what I have so far to back to list for everyone to check out. Now...For those of you that are connected to the Stephen Riddle and Mary Quiett Riddle line, I do have a copy of a newspaper sale notice for a Stephen Riddle that had a farm in Center Twp, Greene County, IN. I think that it is likely that the farm belonged to them. They had 247 acres of which 100 were in cultivation; good dwelling house and kitchen, barn & stables etc. I found it in The Tribune (Bloomington ) volume 2, Saturday morning 29 Sept 1849. If you don't have a copy, I'd be happy to scan it in and email directly to you. Just let me know. Cathy Riddle O'Connor

    3. I saw you inquiry in Tobias Riddle in Logan Co and I wanted to let you know that I am researching Fred Riddle of Logan Co who was my G Grandfather. I have run across Tobias in research but I haven't figured out the connection as yet. I feel they are related because my grandfather just took off fromPike Co., Ky. and went to Logan Co. There must have been some kind of tie for him to go there...Check also Mingo, Cabel, Wayne, and Lincoln Co. as these were a part of Logan Co. at Different times. I will watch for the name and try to send you anything I have on him.. Keep in touch with me, I am having some trouble with my computer so I might loose your address. Fred Riddle was a son of Ishom, who was the son of Asa, who was the son of Tyree of Stokes Co. N. C. This may help in some was as Tobias could be a cousin,Uncle, and nephew. I don't think he could be a brother as I have pretty good record of the direct family. You may also want to check Wise Co. Va. Let me know when Tobias was born too maybe that will help... 2. Hi Robin: Just one comment about your note to Mary ref. the Alabama Riddles. Some may be descended from the KY Riddles, but my line of AL Riddles is descended from William's (Tory) son John through his son Johnson. They were located mostly in the Winston County Area. If you need any detail on this line I will be glad to furnish. Ronny Riddle

    1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] 1880 Cumberland Co., KY Census
    2. Hi Mary, I currently live in Hampton, Virginia. However, my husband was born and raised in Cumberland Co., KY. Now, the information that I have is taken from Federal Mortality Census Schedules 1860-1870-1880 Abstract and Index: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, Metcalfe, and Monroe Counties, Kentucky. By R. N. SMITH and Laura Lee BUTLER. Copyrighted 1975. They state definitely that the # given is the Family # (not the Household#). The information of the three RIDDLE children is listed under a separate heading entitled ADDITIONS TO COUNTY FROM "P" RETURNS (Is this physicians returns?) then under the subtitle District #3, Enumeration District #35. I'll type verbatim. 167. RIDDLE, Sarah; 1; f; w; Ky; Ky; Tenn.; May; flux; 1 (last # is days sick) 167. RIDDLE, Henry C.; 4; m; w; Ky.; Ky.; Tenn.; May; Flux; 4. 167. RIDDLE, John L.; 2, m, Ky., Ky., Sep., Flux, 2. As I believe you're aware, my husband is a descendant of William "The Tory" RIDDLE through his son Joseph, his son Nathan A. R., his son John M., his son Sam Daniel, his son Baker Riley RIDDLE who is my husband's maternal grandfather. I am trying to look at every source for RIDDLE's I can get my hands on in the immediate area (Cumberland, Clinton, Monroe Co., KY). Therefore, I am having to also try to sort out the descendancy of Joseph's brother James as well. Not much to go on yet. I am curious as to whether or not you agree with Rodney that the Alabama RIDDLE's are more than likely descendants of Cumberland Co., KY RIDDLE's. I know just this morning someone (Linda RIDDLE) posted on Alabama RIDDLE's and a couple given names are quite familiar to me (i.e. Ransom and Lucinda). Thank you so much for this lookup. Perhaps the originals will give us a clue to whom their parents are. I'm doubtful their parents were Nathan RIDDLE and Mary PIERCE. Has to be grandparents. Maybe we'll never know. Thanks again Mary. I look forward to hearing from you. Robin L. Poindexter

    2. ELAINE J. SAWIN
    3. Hi Cathy, Thank you for this undertaking...hopefully I can connect to a Riddle line. I've been on the list a looongggg time with not one "cousin" to call my own! The first of my known line is John Riddle b abt 1750? married 1st Margaret DEVERSE. (came from Ireland according to Ridlon...p324 Riddles from Pittsburgh, PA) I have land records that show his wife as a Sarah in 1825, so he must have married 2nd. Children by his first wife(?) not necessarily in birth order Nancy married John EKEY/AKEY 21 Jan 1808 Catherine married John WELDEY/WELDY Margaret (Peggy) married Philip SMITH (who had died by 1841) Elizabeth (Betsy) married John ABRAHAM 10 Nov 1808 James married Elizabeth GILL 30 Apr 1818 (Moved to MINN. in 1850's ) David died single (?) Joseph died single (?) Samuel died single (?) John died single(?) Isaac N. married 1st (unknown) 5 children by this marriage (at this point I need to say that one of the above sons listed in Ridlon's book as died single did not die unmarried as there is a Hiram B Riddle who signs off on John's land after he died and is not the son of James or my Isaac.) Children of Isaac by his 1st marriage: Mary married Cornelius WARD 24 Jun 1838 Sarah married (?) living in Wooster, OH in 1842 Margaret Jane married John GILL 20 Aug 1846 (related to the above Elizabeth?, don't know) David married (?) John married (?) (this son was in prison at the time of the settling of his father's estate in 1848, I believe he eventually married.) Isaac married 2nd Louisa unknown (this is my line) Children from this marriage: Jemima born 1838/1839 in OH married John Kelly 21 Aug 1859 Harriet Ann born 1840/1841 in OH married Patrick Kelly 5 Oct 1859 William L. born Jun 1845 in Greersville, Knox, OH married Lydia Ann HOLLOWAY on Jul 30 1865 William is my line and from him to his son James to his son Dale to my father Dale and to me. Hope this isn't too long. I included some data hoping to catch someone's eye. Thank you again for this enormous undertaking. Elaine Riddle Sawin

    3. Does anyone have a Laymons, Lemons, McLeamons, Lehmans.....you know the soundex thing...........connected with thier Riddle information? Thomas William Riddle's headstone gives his year of birth as 1861. His death certificate gives the birth date as Jan. 13, 1860. Thomas Riddle and Rachel Lemons were married May 1860 Jackson Co., AL. Thomas William lived with Rachel, according to census , until at least 1880. A William Lemons was bondsman for his marriage to Margaret Lynn. The 1860 census of Jackson Co., AL shows Thomas age: 22 Rachel age: 23 , Ransom Carmicheal, Margaret age: 4 b: TN, Lucinda age 2, b: TN. No mention of Thomas William. 1870 census, Marshall Co., Al. shows Rachel 33 b: TN living with a Thomas Boggess family, no children mentioned. Next door with no apparent adult, a family by the name of Lamons: Ransom R . age 15, Margaret age 13, Lucinda age 11 and Thomas W. age 8.] Thomas W. is alson shown with Rachel Riddle in the 1880 , Marshall Co., Al census. ...but in his death certificate it states Thomas Riddle as father and Mother unknown. Trying to cut down on the length of my post....so will add more later....but information sent to me ....another researcher believes the Thomas, father of Thomas William, was married to a Minerva Bowers before 1880 census and they had two children. A daughter named Frances who had a son named Luke Riddle, so assume she was unmarried and a son who had 14 children. Will post that info later as I have time. Family stories are that Thomas and his sister, Lucinda, were worked to death by a Dr. Thomas and at first chance they ran away. Wonder if this was Thomas Boggess. Meantime, if this helps anyone or if anyone can help me, thank you. If you find this might be of importance to you...e mail me direct and I will get anything I have out to you post haste. My time is really limited right now but I am so addicted to trying to find the family of my ggrandfather for my own father......I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. Thank you for all you have contributed. I am so grateful. And thank you for your patience with me. I really don't know what I am doing yet in this geneology search....but at some point I do hope I can contribute something that will help someone. Happy hunting Linda Riddle Lane drgnfly@primenet.com
