District 8. {Begin handwritten} 700 240 Dup {End handwritten} No. Words 138 File No. 240 Page No. 1 Reference Mr. A. W. Cobbs, Bosqueville, Texas. Mr. Cobbs said their family physician was Dr. J. J. Riddle, who was born in 1821 in Alabama. He was educated and qualified for the practice of medicine. In 1846 he moved to the Indian Village of Waco, where he afterwards began to study for the Ministry and became an ordained Minister. He was a skilled physician and an eloquent preacher, both of which callings he pursued with zeal and success. Mr. Cobbs remembered that the Doctor would not enter a place where whiskey was sold, but would send someone else to call out any one with whom he wished to speak. The members of the Church placed a shaft of beautiful marble in the Country Church yard at Bosqueville on which, by his request, has been carefully carved the simple epitaph "A sinner saved by Grace". {Begin handwritten} [???] {End handwritten}
Laura Clark, I have a Alvis Riddle in my family. What I have on him is a follows: Alvis Ben Riddle (Son of John Riddle Jr.) was born about 1812 in Chatham County, NC. He married Rhoda Ann Leader abt. 1839. Children of Alvis and Rhoda are: Jefferson Hill Riddle b. 1841 Stoddard Co. Missouri Rebecca Jane Riddle b. 1842 " Mary Elizabeth Riddle b. 1844 " Lydia A. Riddle b. 1846 " Martin Phillip Riddle b. 1847 " John Joseph Riddle b. 1849. " Alvis did have a sister named Rebecca J. Riddle b. December 21, 1820 in NC. and died 1873 in Stoddard Co. Missouri . She married John W. McMillian on July 2, 1839 in Hardin Co. TN. John was born April 9, 1813 in Canada and died Oct. 31, 1889 Dexter, Stoddard Co. Missouri. John Riddle Jr.(father of Alvis and Rebecca) had 10 children. He marrried Elizabeth ?. More information on this line can be found on Danny Riddle's web site. "Solving the Riddle" decendants of William Julus Riddle. I believe JOhn is in Generation 3 and Alvis Generation 4. Is this the John you are looking for? I just received a letter from them with some information that maybe someone else might also be able to use; "In Goodspeeds History of Southeast Missouri, 1888 on p.1042 there is information that I found on the Alvis Riddle that your cousin passed on to you. Rebecca J. Riddle m. in 1840 in Hardin Co. TN John McMullen - they moved to Stoddard Co. MO in 19841 - she died in 1864. I think (could be wrong) that Rebecca (bc1822) is the sister of Alvis Riddle. What do you think? Also, on p. 907, ibid, George T. Price b1846, moved to New Madrid Co., MO in 1866 and married 21 Nov 1866 Mary Emma Riddle. She d. 1879. Alvis' dau. Mary E. was 16 on the 1860 census, making her the right age for this marriage. On p.1180 it stated that on 20 Aug. 1876 Miss Mary R. Riddle, d/o John Riddle who is living in Union twp, Dunklin Co. MO married William W. White. Don't know where this family fits in, if at all. But, evidently the southeast section of Missouri certainly had its share of Riddles!" Now, this does not yet fit my Riddles! But I am sure, that it will fit Mike Conner's Riddles. I cannot get a hold of this man, as none of the return addresses are working for him. I don't know if it's his ISP, or what. But I have been unable to contact him so I hope he sees this. I would dearly love to show that this Alvis Riddle is a kin to our John Riddle. The Mary Emma Riddle is not my Mary E. Riddle, as she would have only been 5 years old when she got married. I do not know this Mary R. Riddle. Our John Riddle lived in Des Arc, Missouri, Iron County, Union Township. However, he lived there 1860-1880. Beyond that, I have no idea exactly when he moved there or when he died. I will write a letter this evening to the Iron County Historical Society. But if someone else would like their address, here it is; Iron County Historical Society 123 W. Kristen: I have copies from Ancient Ryedales from Gawn down and your Benjamin Franklin Riddle is in fact in there. G.T. Ridlon, the author, lived only a few miles from Bedford and talked directly to John Riddle, a descendant, so I would believe his book to be very accurate. The Town of Bedford, NH history book has a complete listing of this family and it and Ancient Ryedales are much the same. I have about 27 pages of information I could send you. (Too much for Email) Along with Ancient Ryedales and the History of Bedford I have collected many stories from towns nearby. (Milford, Amherst, and Wilton.) Send me your Smail address and I'll get it to you. If this is correct family I would like all the information relating to it. Phil Riddle 224 Refuge Hill Rd. Jasper, GA 30143

I have been searching for my Riddle family in VA, I know my ggrandfather and his brother were in Henrico Co., VA at an early age but some one did a lookup in the Riddle, Ruddle,etc. book and it listed a person who I believe is my grandparent as being born in Orange Co., N.C. So now I would like to list their names and see if some one has any knowledge of them. John Flemming Riddle b.1835 and his brother James Robert Riddle b.1840 I now believe they were born in Orange County, North Carolina Thanks, Charlotte A.
Everyone who is interested in AL ancestry...pay attention to the ALABAMA ARCHIVES: MILITARY RECORDS site that Robin posted. So much for "early to bed" tonight. This reminded me.....I ran across a story of a Riddle who was too old to fight in the Civil War so he went to the coast and harvested salt for the Confederate troops. Any of you familiar with this? Happy, happy 4th to everyone. I am still so new on this search that I am in awe of what our ancestors endured to bring us to where we are today. My grandmother was a TRUE daughter of the confederacy. My greatgrandfather fought in the Civil War. My ggggrandfather fought in the Revolutionary War and was a prisoner in Sav. Ga. Ate grain that spilled from the horses feedings to stay alive.I lived with my grandparents in Albertville, Al. during WWII as my Dad fought and was ultimately a prisoner of war and Mother was a "Rosie the Riveter" in Gadsden, Al. I feel I was born with one foot in one century and the other in next. I wish all of us could have the data and personal stories that I have from my maternal side....my Riddle side has been a pain in the wazhoo.....as it has been to many others. Do you realize I had to take my grandchildren to a farm to show them how vegetables actually grow? This has nothing and everything to do with genealogy...I hope we all look around and do a personal inventory of our blessings....then, tomorrow, offer thanks for where we are today. I thank you all who have helped me so much and I promise to keep being a bee in your bonnet. I WILL find the family of Thomas William Riddle. He was a remarkable man because my father said so. Meanwhile, my unproven cousins, have a safe and happy fourth. Linda Riddle Lane drgnfly@primenet.com
Robin, yes and I find an "Childs L. Riddle" age 5 years, son of William and Emma M, in Sullivan County, MO. in the 1880, by am not able to find them in the 1890 census in MO. Maybe this is where my Texas link comes in. I was told that he was possibly buried in MO prior to 1935. Kristen, Sorry the previous msg was about William Franklin's father. William b 7/22/1835 went into mercantile business in Detroit. He entered the Union army in the Civil War and served as a 2nf Lt in the Wisconsin Vol 22nd Reg. He returned to Detrot to continue business after the war. Kristen, Your Ben Franklin Riddle b3/201804 m Abigail D Colley in 1830 and had 6 children which lived in Beloit as of 1852. Ben died 6/1/1857 in Beloit. You can find his descendants and ancestors in "History of Ancient Rydales", G. T. Ridlon, 1884 on page 230. It's in many libraries. Hope it helps. I just discovered I'm a Riddle. A Riddle descendant that is! So I am a "week old" in this discovery! Knowing that I am related, and at that related to America Jane Riddle who married William Stephenson. And they had eight children. (Any other tributaries of this particular 'line' of this Riddle family out there)!! Would like to hear from you! And know more about your lineage as well, family stories,etc., what ever you can tell me! I'd be glad to hear about the family specifically as related to America Jane and her offspring, as I've said. Or, anything about the Riddle family in general! Please don't interpret my exuberance as a sign that this board is a clique forum, and not a open forum?
