Hi Russ, Please please always include a subject line in your emails because with some very dangerous viruses out there, it is not wise for us on the Riddle List to open an email which has no address and no subject line. In the future we all really should just delete such messages. That would be sad, since this is good information. The book you quote from I have seen at the FHL in SLC. It has some inaccuracies about Thomas Riddle, who we now know was William (tory) Riddle, but the raft down the Cumberland River etc. is really facinating! Hello Jim Hartung and Richard Riddle, Since you are well aquatinted, I thought it would be appropriate to address this to both of you. First off let me thank you for your rapid reply to my posting and my apologies for taking so long to respond. An overload in outside commitments has been occupying my time. I do admit to being guilty of spending a few hours browsing both of your websites, going though the lineage of Tyre, John and Randolph Riddle, and reading Richards Riddle Newsletters. Jim says your the expert Richard, but its clear its a labor of love for both of you. Weather my Mary and her parents James Riddle and Jane Br????n are descendants of this branch of Riddles, remains to be seen. Obviously is was the Britton connection that drew my attention since Ive been unable to find out much about them. Mary Isabilla Riddle was b. Aug. 30, 1859 in Soddy, Hamilton Co, TN, As I stated before her death certificate list her father as James Riddle, also b. in Hamilton Co., TN. Her mother is also listed as being b. in TN. I had a USGENWEB volunteer search the 1860 census of Hamilton Co. for me and she found four Riddle families living in that county none were the right ones, but one was the family of Brittian Riddle age 46, wagon maker: Jane age 36: Worley age 21, blacksmith : Sarah age 18: Francis M. age 13: Kondis M. age 11: and Mary E. age 9. All were born in NC. Im told that the spelling of Brittian is a variation of the Britton name, much like Boon and Boone. Mary Isabilla, married John Boone, July 20, 1875. I found Mary listed as Mary Boone age 21, in the 1880 census for Hamilton Co., TN, with son Robert age 3 (my name sake, Im the fourth generation of Robert T. Boone) and daughter Ellen, age 1. She was living with the Alvin Posey family and listed as a daughter. Alvin Posey is listed as a farmer, age 85. His wife is Jane age 63 or 68 ( difficult to read), also listed are 3 Posey children ages 19, 16 and 15. While it hasnt been proved yet, this tends to indicate that James Riddle died, (possible in the Civil War) and Jane Br????n remarried to Alvin Posey. This would put Janes birth year between 1812-1817. It also means that Jane would have given birth to daughter Mary at the advanced age of 42 or 47. One more thing; The Brittian Riddle listed in the 1860 Hamilton County census would have been born in 1814. Now the question is this; We have what appears to be two families with both the Britton/ Riddle names in TN., almost 40 years before Benjamin Britton Riddle. Do you think theres a possible connection here?? Jim, with regards to my Boones: John Boone was b. May 21, 1852. His death certificate list his parents as UNKNOWN, but shows John born in TN. He was a coalminer. He and Mary moved their family to Morgan Co., Tn., sometime before Sept 19, 1907, as Robert Boone II was born there. There is also a can of worms attached to my Boones in the form of a family story, that says that John Boone, was really John Boone Ragsdale. As a young teen he got into some type of trouble, ran away from home and changed his name to John Boone. Using an 1860 census index as a guide, I have searched the census of every county in KY, TN and VA that has had a Boone or Ragsdale family listed and have found nothing. Well, Thats my story. Im open to any thoughts, comments and suggestions either of you have. Looking forward to hearing from you, Bob Boone ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Russ, What I was talking about, when I said that just because it is in a book doesn't make it true, is the generally accepted fact that William Thomas Riddle was hung as a Tory (loyal to the crown) by Colonel Ben Cleveland, a patriot of the Revolution. The book "The Way It Was" obviously contradicts that. For more information see http://users.erols.com/jimhartung/riddlefam.htm By the way, the pictures are on the way. Gaylon
Hello Gaylon! Thats was interesting hearing that story from that book! I never heard of that particular book. Thanks, Russ
Gaylon: Issac did he have any children by the name of Samuel. You or the book mentioned Issac had several children. being born in 1777, could it be poss. that he had a son by the name of Samuel being born in the 90's, possibly 1795 or so. The Moses RIDDLE listed in 1767 Pittsylvania is listed as "Indian" isn't he? Is he the father of William the tory? I don't know, but was once told that.
Thanks Diane, it doesn't help now because I just don't know enough, but I will keep the info and it might come in handy later. There have been so many references to Riddles being at least part Cherokee that I believe that it's so. Charlotte A.

Dear Riddle family, I need to unsubscribe from the Riddle Discussion Group for now in order to concentrate my time on another branch of my family. I want to thank everyone for the exchange of information I have seen the past couple years. I am descended from Rhoda M. Ann Riddle who is a daughter of Joseph L. Riddle who is a son of William "the Tory" Riddle. I especially thank Mary Hill, Bill Riddle, Rodney Veitschegger and Kerry Flemming who have particularly helped me. I can be contacted by e-mail if you would like to exchange information. Most information I have collected myself begins with Rhoda M. Ann Riddle and her descendants (about 900 descendants). Most of the rest of my 6,000+ William "the Tory" Riddle descendants database originated from people on this Riddle Discussion Group.
