I'm new to the group and to genealogy, and up to now have not had anything to contribute - but have gotten such great information and encouragement for my own research from all of you and especially from Mary Hill. She clued me in to this list. I can't remember which line you descend from, but if you need pictures from Damascus Cemetery in Mt Pleasant, TX or Blevins Cemetery in Cason, TX I may be able to help. I come from the Isaac and Anna Riddle line (Blevins Cem.) and their daughter, Happy and Hollis Riggs (Damascus Cem. Mt Pleasant). I'm certain I have pictures of their markers. At one time I took a few pictures of some of the old Riddle markers at Damascus Cem. but will have to look and see what I have. I visit these cemeteries at least twice a year and keep flowers on their graves. Let me know if this is what you need. I'll be happy to send you what I have. Also, I live in Van Zandt County and volunteer at our small genealogy library. I have to admit I don't know what Riddles are buried here but can look them up. Linda Mays
Hi Russ, Mary (welcome back!) & list, This Sparks/Riddle connection reminded me of something that was in one of the pension files in my Parks/Riddle line. My WILLIAM RIDDLE, b 1803 KY/VA married POLLY PARKS, granddaughter of SAMUEL PARKS 1757-1844 who enlisted at the beginning of the Rev War and served over 3 years as Private with the North Carolina troops under Capt Lewis and Samuel Johnson or William Lenoir and Colonel Cleveland. It was also stated that a portion of the time he was engaged in the expedition against the Cherokee Indians. >From the SAMUEL PARKS pension file..."I was born November 28, 1757, in Amherst Co., Virginia. About 1767, father migrated to Rowan, now Wilkes Co., NC. There until 1796 moved to Burke co., (where he now lives). Father had 17 children, 8 sons and 9 daughters. Sons all married and left father before Revolution except myself and GEORGE PARKS. We both served in the Revolution. George at one time substituted for CORNELIUS SALE, a brother-in-law...." The GEORGE PARKS mentioned below is a brother of the above SAMUEL PARKS. >From the Revolutionary Pension File of GEORGE PARKS, b 5 Aug 1759 Amherst County, VA; died 4 December 1837 Ellettsville, Monroe County, IN; married #1 MILLICENT DAVIS; married #2 CATHERINE REED. Pension file # W27457. State of Indiana, Monroe County On this the tenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three ...... ......."This applicant and his party at another time took a third Tory and hung him in "Hugh Rottom." Not long after and all during said eighteen months service he and the said Company of Minute Men, captured old SOLOMON SPARKS a celebrated Tory. They employed a Whig from a distant neighborhood and a charges to said Old Tory to decoy him out of his house without his gun under the pretense of being a traveler and inquiring the road. They succeeded admirably. He fought bravely with arms and considerably injured this applicant by kicking him. He was sent down the Yadkin in a canoe. After tied hand and foot on his back he repeatedly hollered for "hurrah for King George." This applicant during said service was at the taking of PETER HOLD a Tory." Just thought I'd throw this in for thought. Cathy Riddle O'Connor kayomaxb@aol.com My William Riddle, b 19 Mar 1803 KY/VA; married 25 Mar 1830 to Polly Parks in Monroe Co, IN; died 13 Sept 1840 in Monroe Co, IN; they had children William T (Thomas/Thompson); Priscilla Caroline; George Marion; Harrison H Riddle. Can anyone connect this William 1803-1840 to the William (Tory) line?
Mary: I don't know if there is any connection, but John (son of William the tory) Riddle's son Johnson went to Missouri with sons Andrew Jackson and James. When this family arrived in Alabama, there was an Eliza with them. Some say this was a wife of one of the sons, others say this was a daughter born in Mo. I believe their mother was Jane Shepard. Johnson later married Martha Commack and had five children in Al, one of which was my gr/grandfather Jessie Duraney. Ronny Riddle
Hello list! I tried to fix one typo I had made and made another in relating who married who a Sparks married a daughter of America Jane Riddle and not her, herself. Please excuse my careless typos! Thanks, Russ

I do have pictures of their gravesites in Sweetwater Cemetery. The oldest Riddles there was David Hall Riddle, b. in Jackson County, AL, ca. 1870, moved to Van Zandt County, TX, ca. 1900, then to Sweetwater in the 30's. His descendants are still there, and some are buried in Sweetwater. Also David's sister, Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Riddle Easttam, my grandmother, and her husband Boston Henry Easttam, lived there since the 30's and are buried in Sweetwater Cemetery along with my parents. I believe there are still Riddle's in Van Zandt County. Molly Dixon
Hi Riddle Researchers, Well, my "away" mode did not last very long. I will have to discipline myself and not spend hours answering too many things. But you all have insight I need, so here goes again. I found a group of marriages in Cass Co., Missouri I am interesting in identifying: RIDDLE, Caroline to SAVAGE, James 10 May 1846 RIDDLE, Jackson to JACKSON, Malinda 01 Jun 1851 RIDDLE, James to IDSOM, Eliza 26 Jun 1853 RIDDLE, Lydia to WILLIAMS, John 27 Mar 1859 RIDDLE, Malinda to CREEK, Milton 06 Mar 1836 RIDDLE, Riley to BURGAN, Sally 16 Feb 1845 RIDDLE, Riley to SHELTON, Lydia L 2 Jul 1854 RIDDLE, Simpson to WOODS, Abigail M 2 Jan 1851 RIDDLE, Sintha Ann to STEPHENS, William 22 Aug 1842 RIDDLE, Tiry B to ELRIDGE, Sarah 29 Sep 1852 RIDDLE, Uria to SHELTON, Charles 9 Apr 1853 I believe Simpson Riddle is a son of John Riddle, who went to Utah. Simpson Riddle left the family in Utah and returned to the East. He fought in the Civil War. I am interested to see that there is a Tiry B. Riddle here too. We are trying to figure out if these could be cousins. And Jackson Riddle is here too, Walter. It that our Jackson Riddle? Is this a group of cousins, in Cass Co., MO in the early 1850's? I am realizing how much I need all of you! Mary Hill
Welcome back Mary, we missed you. Diane

Hi Mary I hope this message is not too late to get to you. I've been out of town for a few days and just saw that you have unsubscribed from the Riddle List. You have been the backbone of this List for as long as I have been a member and I have watched eagerly for each tidbit from your research. We owe you more than most of us realize. I hope you won't stay away too long. Good luck with the work that you have to do. Hello everyone! Was wondering If anyone had gone to the various resting places of Riddle family and descendants there in Texas; not just to pay respects but to documented their markers for your record book and there having taken photos of them? This being the case. Has anyone a set they will make copies of for a nominal fee? Once our ancestors are gone, except but for some memories you may have; there is little in the way of remembrances. Their markers are but another remembrance! Thanks, Russ

There was another posting that the "finding" of those records is a fraud. One had checked with the VA and there was not such finding at all.
This was in the Russell County Va page. For you information Earl The following was printed in Lucas Co., IA, July 1999 Newsletter: "Pension Files Found Over a hundred boxes of pension records that date back to the "Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and the Seminole War" were recently found at the National Archives. None of these have ever been indexed or microfilmed. They are arranged by account number and are being published in American Genealogy Magazine by Datatrace System, PO Box 1587, Stephenville, Texas." "Veterans Records Discovered Some 10 million duplicate of 20th century military records thought to have been destroyed in the 1973 fire have been found by the Veterans Administration. If you have been told the records you need were burned in that fire, you may want to write again to: National Personnel Records, GSA 9700 Page Blvd. St. Louis, MO."
