    1. [RIDDLE-L]
    2. Goodmorning. I am just wondering why I am getting no Riddle information. Have I hit a wrong key? This past week all my e-mail was somehow gone one morning when I came in and I have gotten no more that 3 a day since. I have not been able to read it for about 2 weeks, but thought it would stay on my computer until I could. Some I had read and clicked to keep as new until I could check it more thoroughly. Have I somehow unlisted myself? Hope to begin to have Riddles in my house again soon. Thank you, Mary Skinner

    2. Russ and anyone interested in Titus Co: Just found (in another file) the document I referred to. It is entitled "Titus County Celebrates 125 Years". An aunt had loaned me her copy several years ago and I only had time to copy some of the pages so what I have is not complete. It does have lots of photos but perhaps it was the copy machine I used - most are either very dark or very light. It seems to have been put out by "The Quasqui Centennial Committee". If memory serves, it was more a lengthy "brochue" than a book. 1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] Cemetery markers & Anna Grizzle
    2. G-Nell, What a great idea. I'm so computer illiterate, that way of getting photos available to everyone never occurred to me. Question -- I have been to Mt Pleasant (Titus Co TX) and taken snapshots of several pictures hanging on the walls of the Civic Center and also some of those down in the basement of the Public Library. They include (1) a picture of 12 men of the Dudley W. Jones Camp No. 12 of United Confederate Vets (unidentified); (2) Titus County Courthouse built in 1898 and destroyed in 1894; (3) "Civic Center" (downtown Mt Pleasant (no date but the courthouse referenced above is in the background); (4) descendants of Elam Riddle living in Texas (John, Jessie, Frank, America Riddle and "Cuff" Cochran, Susan Delphis Riddle Cochran) - the one Mary Hill printed in her book. My question is - is anyone's permission required to reprint these? As I recall, there was a sign somewhere that the pictures were courtesy of some corp. I have a scanner but no web site. I imagine all of these will be in the reprint of "Images of the Past...." Gaylon advised us was being reprinted. I remember seeing them in some book, but they were so small and blurred it was difficult to distinguish anything. Any suggestions? 2. Connie, Happy to oblige looking for your Wrights et al. Also will look up the Riddles in Van Zandt County (Texas). Please be patient with me. It may be Thursday before I can begin on this - that's the day I volunteer at our local library. Unfortunately, I don't live in the same town - I live about 30 miles away so do not get to the library every day. (Wish I could!) One note of explanation - I'm the first generation of my family to live in Van Zandt County. All my family come from Titus, Camp, and Morris Counties, Texas. Since I'm new to genealogy I haven't had the time to figure out what line the Riddle people in VZ come from. Linda

    2. Nell, We were told at one of our genealogy seminars to take 1. a ruler 2. can of cheap shave cream 3. roll of paper towels 4. and our trusty old camera. When we find an old stone we cannot read that is full of moss or something that looks like tree bark more or less, just spray a small amount of the shave cream on the writings on the stones and then take your ruler and run it across the writings to get the cream inside the grooves of the writings. Then rake the rest off with your ruler. Then take your pictures. It works great. Then two years later they tell us at another seminar meeting to take colored chalk and go inside the grooves to bring out the writings. So I would guess it is up to you what ever you use. I have taken so many photographs of my relatives that have gone on before us. I placed each one on a page inside their pages of our History book. Usually the page after their death certificate. That way everyone that sees it can immediately see who it is and how they are related to that particular individual. Wrakj

    3. Hi Russ, Most interesting. These were challenging times, to say the least. There is an account in the Draper Manuscripts that William Riddle (tory) was shot on Riddle's Knob in Ashe Co., NC and was left there with his wife to die. However, there are several accounts in the Draper Manuscripts that he was taken to Wilkesboro and hanged. Rough old times! I found a possible "connection" between another attack on tories pursued by Cleveland. Where as he was both shot and hung, as well as releasing some of the tories he had captured in this incident. (I first thought it could possible be the same incident; but wasn't sure)? But, now believe it to be a later one! In any event some of those soldiers present with Cleveland were Sparks. 3. Hi Cathie, I don't know of a connection, but that does not mean there was not one. Families were so often split in their loyalities. William Riddle's apparent brother, John Riddle/Ridley of Stokes and Rockingham counties, NC, fought for the patriot cause and received a Rev. War pension. That is the added tragedy of war. The Civil War had similar divided loyalities. I will surely file and save this message.
