Hi Charlotte, The tip of Sussex County borders on Brunswick County Va. My relatives were in Brunswick Co. It's possible. The ones I have info on were born in the 1700's. Thomas Riddle who married Polly Dean. Their children Thomas Riddle b. about 1755 in Brunswick Co. Elisha, Reece & Hardy. My line goes down from Thomas. The Thomas born 1755, he married Polly. Their children were Thomas, William, Henry, Roland, John, Reese, Hardy, Rebecca, Peggy and Polly. Your line could very well be descendants of this line. If any of this connects let me know. No one knows that there is any relationship between Cornelius ROBERTS and the Capt James (Tory) Some have speculated that Capt. James is his father, but I very much doubt that is so. Anything could be.
Hi Bob, There is no doubt that there were family ties there. The fact that William Riddle (tory)'s son Joseph Riddle married Rhoda Monk, grand daughter of Cornelius Roberts, points that direction. These ties are elusive, and hard to prove. I think some of the info. that has been shared the past few days points to the fact that the families of Roberts, Rogers, Riddle, Lee, Walling, Herd, Monk were closely associated. Hi again, I forgot to mention that the Cornelius Riddle of Davidson Co., TN was Cornelius Ruddle, son of Isaac Ruddle. He was known both as Ruddle and Riddle, as was his father. Mary, I was just trying to let cousin C.G. know I didn't think this Cornelius was in his Cato line. Unless there is an earlier link we don't know about. You ought to come check out the Riddle picture site again and see what has been added and what we can share there. Great opportunity to share info!! Vic, Don't know right off the orgins of the Va counties. But Davidson was what she had in 1783. Brunswick may have come from part of Davidson. don't know which is the oldest. Carol: I am looking at the census of 1900 Ralls Co. Mo. and it shows what appears to be for the middle initial as H. It is not a clear copy and it has : Riddle, Frank H June 1865 Mary C wife June 1877 Eli B?(hard to tell the middle initial) cannot even make out the date of birth it is so smeared. Augustus (It is smeared also) same on this birthdate as well to smeared. Richard F. Riddle had: Mary b. 1862 (Don't have anything on her) Victoria Louise Riddle b. June 27, 1864 (have alot on her because she is my ggrandmother) Henry Francis Riddle b. June 1865 William John Riddle b. 1869 Martha Virginia Riddle b. 1872 Richard C Riddle b. 1874. Now Sue Larson has a Harriet Riddle in her line married to a Francis (Frank) M Riddle. Sue is a cousin and comes off Francis (Frank) M Riddle who was the brother to my Richard F Riddle. Her Frank was born in 1839 in Ralls Co. Mo. and she is in the same boat as I trying to locate her side as well. They were the sons of Samuel Riddle b. 1790 in Maryland and moved to White Sulphur, Scotts Co. KY and then on to Florida, Mo. These Ralls Co. Mo. bunch are a mystery to say the least. I have been researching them for years and have little to go until I found Samuel Joseph Riddell last week in Macomb Illinois. He had a son Edward James that changed his name to James and went by Jimmy and I found him today in Burlington Iowa. Thats all we know at this time. Carol - My Riddles are from Stoddard Co., Missouri. I hate to ask for the originals, because I know there are other Riddles on this list who are connected to Missouri, too, but could you send COPIES of your material to: Betty Riddell Webb 7822 E. Sheridan St. Scottsdale, AZ 85257 I appreciate it! Betty Riddell Webb
Carol: I have a Henry Francis Riddle who had a son Eli and wife Mary. It shows him as Frank in the 1900 census of Ralls County. He may have had others in the family but that is unkown at this time. Henry Francis was born in Ralls Co. Mo. and had a brother name William. I have a census that has what looks like Augusta but the ink is smeared and it is difficult to tell. I think this may be the son of my Richard F. Riddle and Martha C Easton. Helen - We are obviously related. My great-great grandmother was Mary jane Riddle, born 1846 in Missouri, died 1894 in Stoddard Co. Missouri. She married James Fields, born 1842. My mother, my grandmother, and most of my aunts and uncles were born in Campbell, MO, (Dunklin Co.), and I lived there as a child. I also have heard the Jimmy Hoffa story - and I have a picture of my grandfather as a young man, and he looks enough like Hoffa to be his twin brother. According to my family, one of the Riddles was murdered - and it was proably your grandfather. I don't have any details, though. Betty Webb

Hi Vic, I too am researching Riddle's of VA, a Lewis Riddle b 1778 in Va. There are several of us researching this line, but can't find anything on him in VA. other than his marriage. Caroline Co., VA, marriage records 1795-1853 records on page 2, a marriage bond issued 24 Feb 1803 , husband Lewis Riddle, wife Elizabeth Barbee, security and witnesses Thomas Riddle, Elijah Barbee and Bereman King. From 1807 through 1816 Lewis Riddle was in Bourbon Co., Ky. then to Bath Co., by 1817. This information from Terri Pettitt who has done extensive work on this line. Could this be your Thomas Riddle? I think we have corresponded before, email me direct if you wish. nbrplez@aol.com
Mary, Wilson Co, TN is not very far east of Davidson Co, TN. ...I think Leganon the Co Seat is only about 30 miles from Nashville. It would be reasonable for Cornelius RIDDLE to own land in both Davidson and in Wilson Co TN Rodney V.
Hi Danny, I believe the Cornelius Riddle in Davidson Co., TN is actually the Cornelius Riddle/Ruddle who was killed by Indians while hunting turkeys. I sent this out a few weeks ago on the list: >Hi Cathie, > >I found a reference in "The Over The Mountain Men" to the fact that Cornelius Riddle was killed by Indians along the Cumberland River. He had killed some turkeys, hung them in a tree, and gone off hunting. When he returned to get the turkeys, the Indians were waiting for him and killed him. > >He may have been Cornelius Ruddle, as I saw a few days ago in the Family Group Record of Isaac Ruddle that his son Cornelius Ruddle died in TN about that time. > >Mary Hill Since then I checked, and this does seem to be the son of Isaac Ruddle. Isaac Ruddle was originally from Frederick Co., VA. He lived in the Sullivan Co., TN area of Montgomery Co., VA and Washington Co., VA from 1769-1779. He went to the Falls of the Ohio in 1779 with his family, where they were captured by Indians. They were released later, and settled Ruddle's Station in Bourbon Co., KY.
