Carol: Thanks for your help. You are terrific. If I can ever do you a favor, please let me know. I live in Ohio and have access to the Fort Wayne, Indiana Library which is an excellent resource. However, I was not able to get to this information. Please don't hesitate to call on me should you need something. Again, thank you so very much. This is Rodney V. and I don't know what the Bledsoe Co action was all about. Apparently Rhoda and Joseph were only in Bledsoe Co TN for a short time, or only owned land there. (my memory isn't perfect!!~!) but I think that I think that Joseph was on 1810 Cumb. Co KY. If so, then they came from TN to Cumb. Co then to Bledsoe Co then back to Cumb. Co. However, I would prefer to think that they owned something in Bledsoe that was sold or disposed while they were still in Cumberland Co KY. Some of the ROBERTS who were in Cumberland Co went to Bledsoe Co TN (from Minutes of Clear Fk Baptist Church). I think the treaty of Mussle Shoals opened some land in that area for settlement.
The name "Louisa" was name of "Louisa" Fork of River in Pike Co, KY. Somehow it got changed to "Louvisa" by some map maker, and after that many people used "Louvisa" as a name. To the embarrassment of many people from that area. It is often very hard to know if they intended Louisa, or Louvisa. Some of my kin were called "Visy" or "Visa" for short, and I assume their name was actually Louvisa.
Ive been following everyones messages regarding this family....has been very interesting....Do you know where Joseph and Rhoda's first four children were born? If they were in Bledsoe Co. Tn. in March of 1811, so does that mean that when Nathan was born that they were not in Bledsoe? Joseph L. was born in Hawkins Co., Tn., so maybe that is where the first 4 children were born... Is there any proof that they were born in Hawkins or Bledsoe Co., Tn? Also I found where there was a Nathan A.R. Riddle who had married a Lucy Rhoda.....have you found anything like that...could this be a1st marriage before he married Mary Pierce? There is so many pieces of this puzzle that needs to be fixed huh? Well hope to hear more and keep hoping that I will run into my Thomas Riddle who married Hulda Osbourne....The Osbourne's and Riddle's were living in Warrick Co., In. at the same time.....Keep up good work......Loretta Riddle in Evansville, In. Mary, The only source I have that Nathan RIDDLE was born in Hawkins Co., TN is Nettie Lee Benson. I can scan the document written by Nettie Benson if you like and email it to you. I suppose Nathan was most likely born in Bledsoe Co., TN. Would you agree? I see from Rodney V.'s records that Joseph and Rhoda were in county records of Bledsoe in March 1811. Quote from Rodney's records, "Bledsoe Co judgment 29 Mar 1811 State Martha HOLT, prostr vs George LEACH, Mar 1811 Looney Services, Const. John HOLMAN, WTN: Joseph RIDDLE, Rhoda RIDDLE, Dauswell RIDDLE, Catherine RIDDLE, John THROPSHIRE, fine Sep 1810." Do you know what this is all about?????? I don't believe Nathan RIDDLE was born in Cumberland Co., KY because Joseph wasn't in the 1810 Cumberland Co Census--only James RIDDLE. Joseph doesn't show up until 1820. Am I mistaken? Census day in 1810 was 6 Aug 1810, so it stands to reason that Nathan RIDDLE (b. 23 May 1810) was more than likely born wherever is father was during the 1810 census. ???????? Was he in the Bledsoe Co., TN Census of 1810? What do you have that shows Joseph and Rhoda were married in Russell Co., VA? Is this an educated guess? Also, while I was going back and looking over my source data I ran across a letter I copied from Nettie Lee BENSON to to Mr. Kenneth FLOWERS dated 4 May 1982. In it she writes, "The Estate settlement of Cornelius ROBERTS was most welcome and I am certain that it will be most welcome also to other descendants of Thomas RIDDLE and his wife Happy Roberts; hence, I think I'll put it in one of the issues of THE TRAIL so others may be able to relate to it. I do believe that most likely this Roberts family is very closely allied to 'Happy' Roberts. It is quite possible that Cornelius Roberts was a brother of 'Happy' or a cousin." QUESTION--What is it about this estate settlement of Cornelius Roberts that ties Happy closer to the ROBERTS in Nettie's opinion? Have you seen this estate settlement? Do you know which county it's filed in? I always welcome your input, thanks for keeping me on my toes. Hope I haven't asked too much at once. Best Regards, Robin L. Poindexter
Charles, First let me say that your work in organizing us all is greatly appreciated by me. I don't notice a lot of reply's to your posts, but I hope they are going directly to you. It helps to pinpoint discrepancies and obvioius inaccuracies. Anyway, I wanted to make a couple of comments. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I wanted to have all my ducks lined up. 1) Delete the possible death date of 1865 for Nathan A. R. RIDDLE. Also, there is definitely an A. in his name in his father's will. I know I personal said 1865 was a possibility looking at his tombstone, but after reviewing records it is not!! He is listed in both the 1870 and 1880 Census of Cumberland Co., KY. There is also an ARMY PENSION--Father's case in the pension file Arthur P. RIDDLE, his son, date 1866. There is also a "Proof of Father's dependence on Son for Support in the file as well. ** As a side note, there are affadavits signed by Elzy BOND, Abijah C. RIDDLE, and Jesse R. BOW. 2) You list Louise as possibly Luvinsa. Every time I have seen her name spelled, it phonetically sounds like Louise/Louisa. I have seen it spelled "Luwise" in her father's will, but it has never looked like Luvinsa to me. As far as Louise's death date, I don't have anything specific, but I do know she died after the 1860 census where she is listed in the household of her brother Nathan. She is 55. 3) Where is John S. RIDDLE listed as a son of Joseph RIDDLE? Did he die before Joseph wrote his will? 4) You need to add Polly RIDDLE's first husband, Phillip LAWSON. Here is a deed found in Cumberland Co., KY Deed Book L, pg. 260. This also proves Nathan is her brother. "This indenture made this sixth day of January in the year of our Lord, On Thousand eight hundred and forty eight Between Joseph SPEERS and Polly SPEER his wife, of the county of Cumberland and State of Kentucky of the one part and Charles SMITH of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. To have and to hold, the aforesaid tracts of land, with their woods, waters, improvements ?heredilements [sic] to the said SMITH, he having paid to GILREATH the sum of one hundred and 74 dollars in full consideration for said lands, and we bind ourselves to warrant and defend the title to all and each of the above recited tracts of land to the said SMITH and his heirs forever, clear from the just claim of all and every person or persons whatever- In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals, the day and date first above mentioned or written. J. H. GILREATH It is expressly understood and agreed upon Thomas SMITH between the parties hereto, that the grantors, have received no consideration for the land conveyed and that the land conveyed was willed to the said Polly SPEER by her former husband Philip LAWSON, and by her given to her brother Nathan RIDDLE without any consideration and by him to Alexander SPEER and by him sold to James H. GILREATH and by said GILREATH sold to said grantee Charles SMITH for the above named sum of $175 Now the said Polly SPEER conveys the free simple title to the said land above deeded, and the said Joseph SPEER conveys his life estate in the said lands so conveyed, which he acquired by marriage with the said Polly not incurring any liability or responsibility by making this deed but giving only a quit claim deed to any and all title that may be in him for life, acquired by marriage as aforesaid. Witness our hands and soals [sic] Joseph SPEER Polly SPEER Kentucky Cumberland County I Milton KING clerk of the county court for said county do certify that the within deed of conveyance from Joseph SPEER and Polly his wife to Charles SMITH was produced to me in my office on the 14th day of June 1848 by the aforesaid grantors, and acknowledged by the said Joseph SPEER to be his act and desire And the said Polly being examined by me privily [sic] and apart from her said husband, declared that she did freely and willingly sign, seal, and deliver the same to be her act and deed, and the said deed being again shown and explained to her, she voluntarily of her own accord, without persuasion or coertion [sic] of her said husband acknowledged the same, and wished not to retract it, but desired that the same be recorded, which is truly entered of record in my said office in deed book L page 260 Given under my hand this 20th day of June 1848 M. Would it be too much trouble for your to give some of the information it has regarding this family and possibly any suggestions on how I may get access to this reference. Thanks for your help. Hi Loretta and Robin, I have been following your emails with great interest. I am surprised to see that Nathan was born in Hawkins Co., TN. His parents, Joseph Riddle and Rhoda Monk, were married in Russell Co., VA. Rhoda's parents, Shadrack Monk and Polly Roberts Monk, were from Russell Co., VA. What information do you have that they ever went to Hawkins Co, TN? Mary Hill At 09:28 AM 8/19/1999 EDT, you wrote: >Loretta, >I was so excited reading your email. Hi Listers For those of you who are interested in attending the next Riddle Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Texas, it is scheduled to be held on the first Sunday in June, which would be June 4, 2000, if I'm not mistaken. This reunion has been traditionally held mainly by descendants of Elam Riddle and Isaac Roger(s) Riddle. These two were sons of Isaac William and Anna (Grizzle/Grizzel) Riddle. Isaac, as most of you already know, was the twin brother of Joseph L. Riddle, and son of William Riddle of Virginia and North Carolina (the Tory). Mount Pleasant is a small town of about 12-13,000 in Northeast Texas about 150 miles east of Dallas and about 50 miles west of Texarkana, on Interstate 30. The reunions have been held in an organized form since the 1950's, when upwards of 400 people would attend. Since then attendance has dropped off drastically for various reasons. I have attended the last two and have noticed the drop off myself just in the two years. There couldn't have been more than twenty people at the last one. And that includes myself and two cousins I was able to persuade to come with me. I think there is a danger of this reunion dying off if attendance continues to drop. I am a descendant of Isaac William and Anna through another son, Joseph Pierce Riddle, who moved away after his first wife, Nancy Smith, died in 1853. I would love to see this reunion continue. Therefore, for anyone who thinks they will be interested, I will post a reminder to the List in April and May of next year giving dates, times, directions and phone numbers to call for more info. A cousin, Bob Riddle rlr007@msn.com
Hi Sara I haven't been checking my mail very often lately so I had not seen your message about reunions. I did attend the last reunion in Mt. Pleasant and was disappointed at the turnout. Hi Robin Yes, Selia Alecia married William Henry (Buck) Graham. I do not have their marriage date. They are buried at the Rose Of Sharon Cemetery in Cumberland County Ky. I took pictures of their headstones last July. The Old headstones were laying down on the graves and new headstones had been erected. Their children were Burr Harrison Graham, Marion Bradley Graham, Rose Graham, James (Jim) Graham, and Perry Graham. William had red hair. I would like to know about the descendents of John M. Riddle Thanks Nate
Loretta, I was so excited reading your email. I also list Celia as Sela Alicia born 31 Jan 1861 and the baby of the family. The exciting part was reading that Mary PIERCE was Nathan's second wife!!!
