    2. Can anyone give me some guidance on Riddle research in the Cumberland County KY area? Would like to visit library and cemetaries but I have never been there. About 15 Brown cousins are meeting for dinner at the Alpine Lodge 5pm Sep 17th (some of us are also Riddle related). If anyone wishes to join us, the more the merrier. Most of us plan to spend the weekend doing research so any tips you can pass along would be greatly appreciated. Jan Brown Wiesner (gdaughter to Wonnie Riddle and Pleasant Arlie "Ollie" Brown)

He gave a whole talk on Scottish Emigration. I was pretty sure of this before and after he said it tonight I am sure it is so: There are no official government lists of emigration from any of the British Isles before 1890. This is really not true, though. There was a brief period about 1803 when the British Navy was stopping ships bound for the USA out of Ireland and making lists. Their propensity to stop ships (and hijack men to fight against ol' Bony) was one of the reasons for the War of 1812. Brian Mitchell published these in one of his books of Irish Emigrants. You can find Scottish judiciary lists (if I u nderstood Paul Smart correctly) that list folk who were evicted from the highlands, as well as lists of apprenctices, forced or otherwise (kidnapping children and selling them off to America was a popular business in Aberdeen in the late 1700's). His examples were all hand written, hard to read, and even harder to find. A last resort. Probably only Paul Smart could ever find these th ings!! But there is hope! Dobson has published a lot of books on Scottish emigrants. Named gleaned from all kinds of sources. Everyone who is try ing to trace people should look at them. They are now on CD at www.familytreemaker.com . However the very first place to start is Filby. Filby has been indexing all printed sources of immigrants. Its the first place to check. Filby. P WIlliam, "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index". A long series of tomes in your nearby library. You have to look up the ancestor in every single one. This is a drag, so Family Tree Maker has just released it on a CD. The CD will not include next year's edition, so you will either have to buy a new CD or go down to the library and look up your ancestors in it. It's about $60, but considering that each of the many volumes individually cost $300, it is a steal. Buy one, use it, then donate it somewhere where you can get a tax deduction. Then twice a year, for ever, go down to the library and look up all your ancestors in the new volumes as they come in. I am told (by someone in one of these lectures) that the early stuff is all published in and Filby. This could be depressing, if true, since a lot of my early folk aren't in Filby. At the time they came, we rely on accidental lists and diaries. A collateral relation was a compulsive diarist and did document a ship from Ireland in 1729...so there is hope. That's here: http://www.frontiernet.net/%7Enrepard/shiplis1.html I'm descended from John Beatty, but via his first wife Eliza. John was from Ayr (born mid 1600's) before he went to Ireland. (that's my "other" Beatty line: I got two). The British Isles Family History Society in America's website has an extensive guide to immigration research: http://www.rootsweb.com/~bifhsusa/ And there's a free course, nope, sorry, three, on immigration on www.familytreemaker.com (scrolll to bottom). If you don't find them in Filby, then it is time to consider the strategies outlined in the BIFHS guide. Probably that means hitting the New York ship lists unless you know for sure they came in another port. Of course you might luck out and find them on the internet, but if you have ever seen the huge rows of film of unprinted shiplist films at NARA, you know that only a drop of the bucket is on the web. Regards, Linda Merle --part1_2f371140.24f982be_boundary--

    2. Mary Hill
    3. Rodney, I have Moses Riddle in Garrard Co., KY in 1800. Also in Garrard Co., KY was Edmund Smith. Edmund Smith was next to Moses Riddle on the 1767 tax list of Pittsyvania Co., Va and when Moses Riddle put in an entry for land in 1768. Edmund Smith sold land in Lee Co., VA in about 1798 to John Ely and it says "Edmund Smith of Garrard Co., KY." There are many others in Garrard Co., KY who associated with the Riddle family: Several Smith's, Joshua and Nathan Nichols, Isaac Ingram, several Herd's, several Davis's (James Riddle married Sarah Davis), several Brown's, several Anderson's, Perkins, Patterson, Rice, Thompson, Wallin, Yokum. I am interested in ties to Rockingham Co., KY because a Haley from Rockingham Co., KY married a Nancy Riddle which their biographer thought was Nancy Riddle, dau. of Isaac William Riddle of Boone Co., KY. That is wrong however, because Isaac's Nancy married Levi Webster and stayed in Boone Co., KY the rest of her life. So, I wonder who the Nancy Riddle was that married the Haley? 2. Thanks Loretta #1. I too spent Lots of time at Willard before the puter. That was 18 months ago. In classes there they taught; when you have turned over every rock; go back and do it again and again. I guess that's what I am doing. I can't find my information through the Cannon's so I am trying to connect Henry to people with the same name in the region where he lived. I have a strong feeling that Mariah, Joseph and Henry Cannon were related. In the 1880 Clinton Co. census; they list i.e. 180/183: Riddle Wm. D. 50 Mariah 51 (Cannon) John W. 21 Geo. T. 19 Mary F. 14 Alex. 12 Alfred W. 10 Ellen 8 182/184 Riddle Wm. D. 22 (their son) Eliz. 16 Hope I haven't bored anyone with my rambling. :) L.P.T. PS. I Live on the far Westside. Near Redbank

    1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] William Davis RIDDLE Clinton Co. Ky
    2. Hi - this is Loretta in E-town....glad to see another Loretta, very unusual name.....I have spent many, many hours at Willard, that is til i got my puter, now I spend most of my time on it.....Tho I did go to a little town in Warrick Co. In. last week and found several things on my line Thomas and Hulda Riddle.....So welcome, there are a bunch of good people on here that are willing to help you.....I have really found lots of info on here and its always so interesting too....So you can email me at Loretta1125@msn.com. or Loretta1125@aol.com. Where do you live? I do have lot of info on your people but I dont have her parents names either.,..maybe someone else does. All I have is that William D. Riddle married Mariah "Maria" (Cannon or Conner, possibly maiden name) Petty (probably was married to a Petty). she was born ca. 1829 in Jackson, Tn. William D. Riddle was born ca 1827 in Clinton Co., Ky. The son of Davis and Martha Riddle..William and Mariah were married 09-07-1854 or 1855 in Clinton, Co., Ky...I would assume it might be 1853 or 1854 since their first child was born 06-27-1854, but whos for sure. Martha S. was 1st child..then Nancy Jane born 07-18-1856 in Clinton Co., Ky., then William Davis born 11-29-1857 in Clinton Co., Ky. and John W. born ca. 1860......not sure if this is all of their children or not....hav been working on them today and got stopped several times, before I did all the looking I wanted to do....Do you have this info and is it correct and do you have anything more to add to it......I have several thousands of Riddles here in my books, that I have found in several different states, county seats, libraries, graveyards, etc....so if I can help anyone will be glad to ok....Nice to meet another Loretta......Goodnight am gong to bed......zzzz ----- Original Message ----- From: <PTu1051423@aol.com> To: <RIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 26, 1999 9:37 PM Subject: [RIDDLE-L] William Davis RIDDLE Clinton Co.
