Can anyione give any info on John Flemming Riddle, b.1835.? I believe he was born in Virginia around Henrico Co., Some one said maybe Orange Co.,N.C. I haven't been able to find him at all. Thanks, Charlotte A.
To Russell D Merryman and others, Indeed, I came across several Lorenzo Dow namesakes. Here's a piece on the original Lorenzo Dow: Lorenzo Dow was reported to be able to raise the devil with his fire and brimstone preaching. He flourished in the 1805-1811 period in middle Tennessee and along the Natchez Trace. He kept a detailed journal of his travels and preaching and published a book, History of a Cosmopolite, which went into many editions. "We had a cry and shout, and it was a weeping, tender time," he wrote of one of his meetings. Some other times of "cry and shout" almost resulted in riot. Once, preaching on "Judgment Day," he put a little Negro boy in the top of a pine tree. There, at the cue from Dow, he was to blow loudly on a horn. When Dow had worked his listeners to the proper fervor and spoke of Gabriel trumpeting the world's end, the little black boy dutifully let loose a resounding blast. Panic ensued. Then, when the hoax was discovered, the indignant started to mob the preacher. Dow was equal to the occasion. "And now, Brethren," he shouted over the tumult, "if a little Negro boy blowing on! a tin horn can make you feel so, how will you feel when the last day really comes?" (see The Devil's Backbone, the Story of the Natchez Trace, by Jonathan Daniels, p.147-55). I am thrilled by the progress I've been able to make in my quest. Of course, I attribute this to the Internet and to the generous folks who have made their investigations available to novices like myself. Just last weekend, we talked to a man who has 5 first cousins living within 100 miles of himself and neither knew the other existed. In my own family, just a week ago, I found family pages for my cousin's great-grandparents and 800 of his relatives about whom he knew next to nothing. With amazement and gratitude, John Weiser (and Cathie Riddle-Weiser)

Does anyone have information on a Uriah or Urias Riddle in 1880 Alabama? >From census records I feel he must have some sort of ties to my ggrandfather Thomas William Riddle. Am interested in any information that anyone may have concerning connection of surnames LYNN, LEMONS, CHANDLER, CHAMBERS, BOWERS OR HOLMES with the Riddle line. Suspect Lemons may be the maiden name of Thomas Williams mother. Area connections....TN., KY., & AL. Thank goodness, someone stated this is an elusive family. Hi Bev, Good grief, where did you get your information??? I have researched this family INTENSELY since 1991, and wrote a 150 page book last year on William Riddle, his possible ancestry, and six of his sons and daughter Happy Jr. who married Henry Fisher. I have long suspected that there was a seventh son - Moses - who was the oldest. In the Draper Manuscripts there are accounts that he was also hung with his father. I have suspected that the fatehr of William Riddle was Moses Riddle, who can be found in Orange Co., NC and in 1767 on a tax list in Pittsylvania Co., VA. He is listed on the list as "Moses Ridel (Indian)." Moses Riddle died in Henry Co., VA after 1785, when he is on the tax list of Henry Co, VA. I am dying to know where you got your information! Hello, I'm new to this list and am searching for any information on Janette Riddell b. in Virginia in 1742. She married in Orange Co., VA about 1766 to Preston Sheppard Gilder. Children: James, William, Frances, Lewis, Roshannah, George, Sarah, Joyce Powell, Elizabeth "Betsy"; Thomas S.; Honorius and Jeannete. Janette was daughter of William Riddell b. about 1720 and died 20 Dec 1776 Orange Co., VA married to Joyce Powell. Children: James Parker, Lewis, William, Joyce, Winnyfrit, Saley and Janette. James Riddell and Mary // were parents of William Riddell. James was born about 1700-1705 in Scotland. He died in Orange Co., VA. His wife Mary was also born in Scotland. Do not know of other children. Any help, additions or corrections greatly appreciated. Will gladly exchange. Thanks, Sarah
Sorry. my mistake. I thought it was a Riddle reunion. Thanks for the info. Charlotte A.
Hi Charlotte: The gathering in Wilkesboro is not a Riddle gathering but a dedication of several historical monuments renovated by the town of Wilkesboro and the Old Wilkes Museum. One of the dedications is of the "Tory Oak" monument built to replace the original Oak that was destroyed by lightning several years ago. The "Tory Oak" is believed to be the tree where Captain William Riddle and others were hanged from for their efforts on behalf of the British during the Revolutionary War. All are welcome. It should be a very interesting event. Ronny
Dear List, This is the first time that I have posted to this site. My connection to the Riddle family starts with Harriet Happy Riddle, b:1777 Goochland Co, Va, d:1862 Hancock Co, Tn, m:7 Feb 1799 Russell Co, Va, to spouse:Heinrich Henry Fisher. Happys parents: William Thomas Riddle, b:@1745, and Harriet Happy Roberts, b:@1749. Happys siblings were: Moses b:@1766, Jmaes b:@1767, Thomas b:@1769, John b:1773, Joseph b:@1775, Isaac B:@1775, and William b:@1777. Now, Happy Riddle and Heinrich Fisher had a daughter, Catherine, who, it has been written, was 1/2 to full blood Cherokee indian and stood about 7' tall, quite an imposing stature. Her grave was 8-9' foot long. The Fisher line is of German ancestry. Happy Riddles father, William Thomas Riddle, was a Captain in the British Army and was hanged by Americans at Riddle's Knob. Harriet Happy Roberts father, James Roberts, was also a Captain in the British army. I am looking for the ancestry of Harriet, William and Moses, and I am especially interested in knowing about Moses' indian ancestry? Is it documented? Your help is appreciated. Thank you, Bev Clark
Hi Steve, will you get in touch with me when you have time, Charlotte A in CA. ceearm@aol.com. We talked a while back about Huntington Beach Library. I had a computer problem and lost all of my email addresses and favorites, so I'm hoping you are reading this. If you are will you send me the Stokes Co.,N.C. Riddles Page and any other Riddle pages, including your own? Thanks, Charlotte A.
Oh Golly, I sent that to the wrong list. Sorry!!!!!!!
I ask for someones address to order a rose study, Somehow the address did not print out and I do need it desperately. Was it you? Eva Whitehead
Hi Ronny, I read your email about the Riddle gathering and just wondered if this is for all Riddles or just a particular branch? My mother's branch of the Riddle family are from Virginia and although I wouldn't be able to attend the gathering I would like to know if there is a way to post names say, of another branch in hopes some one can make a connection. I have been researching for about five years, lots of hours on the computer, sent lots of letters and have had the services of three different genealogists, about to hire another, but I'm still not much further along than I was when I started. >From info I had from family, we had the name wrong for my ggrandfather we had John Robert and it was James Robert, actually that's a big thing of course, but that is also about the most help I had from the genealogist as she said this family was the most elusive one she had ever researched. I bought the Ridlon book about the Riddle family, no help there. I have the book of papers written by Nettie Benson (I think that's right) on order. Kinda at a stand-still now. Hoping you can send some info about the gathering. Thanks, Charlotte A.
